Improv at Canon Frome Court | Canon Frome Court
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cano
What happens at Improv? The primary objective is to have fun. We start with simple warm-up games to get to know each other, and then some exercises to help us create short stories and sketches. If you want to just stand back at any time that’s ok, but most people want to join in and enjoy the unexpected scenarios that unfold Why come to Improv? Improv helps us to ‘be in the moment’ and free our minds, it helps us to reconnect with the imagination we had as a child, and with our imagination we connect with our creative self. Improv helps us to build self-confidence, develop communication skills, work as a team, think outside the box … and yes, you get all that while having a good time …! Who is Improv for? Improv is for anyone who wants to ‘give it a go’. You don’t need any drama, acting or improv experience. Whatever you do, you are making it up, and you can’t get anything wrong. You can create anything you want, and be whoever you want – that’s the fun of it. Wheelchair access available – please get in touch

Event Overview: Writing Ourselves for the Stage – OILCAN Feeder Workshop (Session 1) Kick off your creative journey with Writing Ourselves for the Stage, the first in a two part series of inspiring workshops feeding into OILCAN – the musical, a bold new production blending Scottish storytelling with contemporary rap and song. In this two-hour session, you’ll explore how to turn personal stories into compelling scripts for the stage. Through fun and supportive exercises, we’ll cover the basics of playwriting: crafting dialogue, shaping character, and using dramatic structure to bring ideas to life. Whether you're brand new to writing or already exploring your voice, this workshop offers practical tools, creative inspiration, and a welcoming space to express yourself. You’ll also get a taste of what’s to come in Session 2: Songwriting for Self-Expression, where music, melody, and rhythm take centre stage in telling your story. About the MusicalOILCAN - the musical is a bold and innovative musical blending contemporary rap with traditional Scottish airs. Power, identity, and community leadership are all explored. Developed through collaborative workshops, the musical amplifies unheard voices, telling the stories of communities facing political and social challenges.
At its core, OILCAN – the musical is a platform for creative expression, where participants contribute ideas, lyrics, and scripts that may shape the final production. This hands-on creative session blends playwriting, songwriting, and performance, introducing the core skills behind musical theatre writing. This workshop offers a unique chance to explore storytelling through music with opportunities to get professionally published. Through attending one of our feeder workshops, you can develop skills in musical writing, connect with a wider artistic community, and potentially see your work both published and featured in a professional production!

Loud Poets Open Mic || At the Canons' Gait | The Canons' Gait
Jun 30, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Cano
Join us twice a month for fist-thumping, pint-drinking, side-tickling, award-winning poetry!
On the second and last Monday of every month, Loud Poets welcomes poets to perform their work at the Canons' Gait at our open mic. We invite poets writing all styles of poetry to come along and share (even if you're not very loud!). With a different feature performer every time, this event offers a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7:00 start. The event has a 15 minute interval about one hour in. It wraps up around 9.30pm.
Please note that this event is free and unticketed (you don't need to book through Eventbrite to attend). Seating is first come, first served. As this event tends to fill up quickly, we recommend that you arrive early (doors 6.30pm) to ensure a seat. Having an Eventbrite booking will not guarantee you a seat or sign you up for the open mic.
To sign up to perform, please fill in the form at https://forms.gle/4L5piaPc6CBCvqfa6 We will email you one week prior to the event to let you know whether you have a guaranteed performance spot. We always leave two spots open, and these spots will be filled by random draw from poets who sign up on the door. When you arrive at the open mic, please check in with the host to confirm you're here (if you have a performance slot) or if you'd like to sign up on the door.
Performance slots are five minutes. Poets are welcome to perform as many or few poems as you would like within that time. You are welcome to go under the five minutes, but please do not go over, out of respect to your fellow performers. All ages are welcome, but please note that due to the venue's licensing laws, under-18s can only be present until 9pm so would need to leave at the interval. At our open mic and all of our events, we endeavour to create a safe, welcoming space for all to attend and share their work. We ask performers to be respectful of the diversity of our experiences. We do not tolerate racism, sexism, transphobia, xenophobia, ableism, or any other forms of discrimination and harassment. Don't punch down. Performers and attendees who violate this policy will be asked to leave.
Access information: The event takes place in the downstairs room of the Canons' Gait, so unfortunately it is not wheelchair accessible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. There is a single step up to the stage. There is a microphone on stage and we require performers to use it. If you have any questions about accessibility, please contact mark@iamloud.co and we will do our best to accomodate you.
The Loud Poets Open Mic is organised by I Am Loud CIC. It is produced and hosted by Mark Gallie.
