The Mayor’s Garden: History of the Ten Broeck Mansion Gardens & Workers | Albany County Historical Association-Ten Broeck Mansion
Jul 23, 2025 (UTC-4)
Albany
Embark on a special tour as we delve into the rich history of the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion and its grounds, uncovering its deep-rooted connections to Albany and the surrounding region. This tour explores the contributions of workers, including African American Master Gardeners (a historic term), and their pivotal roles in developing the Hudson Valley estates. Discover the diversity of plants imported from around the world while exploring the historic 1764 boundaries of the site, including visits to the former orchard and archaeological locations of key landscape features from the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about Thomas Worth Olcott, a noted banker in Abraham Lincoln’s close circle, and his passion for horticulture, along with the lives of the gardeners who created the famed gardens at the Ten Broeck Mansion. Operated by the Albany County Historical Association as a community-centered museum and gardens, the Ten Broeck Mansion has welcomed the public for 77 years, showcasing the enduring relevance of this historic site to our community.
We suggest an additional 20-30 minutes to explore our historic gardens on your own with self-guided tours and browse our museum shop of local artisan goods and books.
To make your visit safe for all:
1) By car: please park in our Livingston Avenue lot, GPS address 136 Livingston Avenue, Albany NY. Free off-street parking. Our historic neighborhood has sidewalks for easy pedestrian access. See our website for information on public transportation.
2) Please wear comfortable shoes for walking on historic, sometimes uneven surfaces (no spike heels). Bags should be smaller than a backpack. Please no touching of historic museum collections. Water (in bottles) may be brought into historic museum spaces.
3) Due to limitations on our tour schedule, we are unable to offer refunds. However, you may let us know to contact you if a tour slot opens up and we will credit your tickets for another opening, if possible.
4) Late arrivals will not be able to stay past the allotted time.
5) ACHA members will have active membership verified prior to tour start.
6) Can't join us for a tour? Our museum shop is open on Thursdays 10am-2pm, Fridays 10 am - 2 pm and Saturdays 1-4 pm (plus Sundays 1-4 , June-August). Browse locally made artisanal gifts and our history book selections.

s which are:
Microlink using I Tips
hair extensions are also known as microbeading hair extensions or micro loop hair extensions. These are applied by attaching tiny wefts of hair, to small sections of the natural hair with a small silicone-lined bead. Then, a special tool is used to secure the bead to the hair and tightened to hold it.
Braidless Sew In
a technique that is used to create a sew in without having to braid the hair.
Fusion U Tips
is a type of human hair extensions that is shaped like a U and is applied to the hair by heating up, it is also called Hot Fusion hair extensions. U Tip hair extensions are long term hair extensions that you wear day and night for several months.
Tape Ins
are pre-taped and then taped/glued together with a piece of natural hair in between.
Brazilian Knots
is composed of hair that is sewn onto a horizontal strip, or weft. Stylists can “sew” the weft into your hair by pairing small portions of the extension’s strands with small batches of your own strands and securing it with a bead at the “roots.
Proper education should come from an actual extension artist with behind-the-chair, real-life years of experience. At the School of Glamology, you’ll be trained by real hair extension artists, and get hands-on education that you seek.
Our instructors will share all of their coveted secrets about hair extensions and why it’s important to be more educated than your competition. ABOUT CHASE RICE
With more than 2.6 million albums sold and over 2.8 billion total streams, plus a legion of passionate fans at his high-energy concerts across the globe, Chase Rice has established himself as a powerful force in Nashville and beyond. With independent album Go Down Singin’ available everywhere now as the follow-up to the critically acclaimed I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell, and both brought together on brand new offering Fireside Sessions, Rice’s sound continues to evolve to reflect the realities of his life; from emotional reckoning to an admiration of the American West. The new music serves as a follow up to his three-part project, The Album, which featured his latest Platinum-certified No. 1 hit, “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.” and the Platinum-certified Top 10 hit “Lonely If You Are.”This is the same gravelly-voiced Chase Rice fans first fell in love with years ago–but better, freer; unbeholden and uninhibited. The new music builds upon the success of his sophomore album, Lambs & Lions, which featured the 3x Platinum, two-week chart topper “Eyes On You”–Rice’s first No. 1 as an artist and the most-streamed song of his career. Lambs & Lions followed Platinum-certified Ignite the Night, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and No. 3 on the all-genre chart, producing a pair of Top 5 hits; Platinum-certified “Gonna Wanna Tonight” and Double Platinum “Ready Set Roll.” In addition to guesting on sold-out stadium shows with Kenny Chesney and Garth Brooks, Rice served as direct support on Dierks Bentley’s 2024 Gravel & Gold Tour and consistently sells out venues on his own headlining tours across the U.S. and beyond. Dr. Chris Troiano
received his Doctorate from George Mason University’s School of Music, where he currently teaches. Along with teaching, Dr. Troiano is the Historical Ensembles Program Manager for the Green Machine Ensembles at George Mason University. As a historical low brass performer, Dr. Troiano has performed with the Old Bethpage Village Brass Band, Newberry’s Victorian Cornet Band, the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Band, the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment Band, the Fort Delaware Cornet Band, Beck’s Philadelphia Brigade Band, the Yankee Brass Band, and Music of the Regiment.

.
Dr. Steve Gasiorowski
is a retired Ph.D. analytical chemist. While spending 35 years working as an industrial chemist, Steve performed on low brass with many amateur and semi-professional ensembles in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Jersey. With a particular interest in 19th century American brass bands, Steve continues to collect and play antique brass instruments in groups such as Yankee Brass Band (35 years), the 12th NH Volunteer Regiment Serenade Band, a Civil War reenactment band which he currently manages, the Newmont Military Band of Windsor, VT, modeled on bands of the 1890’s, the Centennial Cornet Band of Portland, Maine, and on occasion the Federal City Brass Band of Baltimore, Maryland. He also plays bass trombone with the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra and the Carter Mountain Brass Band of Gilford, NH.
Since 1987, the
Yankee Brass Band
has entertained audiences with “historically informed performances” of 19th Century American Brass Band Music. Using rare and authentic period instruments, the Yankee Brass Band presents the music of the “Golden Age of Bands” played in much the same manner as in the mid to late 19th century. Each summer, the members of the Yankee Brass Band assemble from across the country, volunteering their time and talents to preserve this unique musical legacy through a week of live performances. The annual events are made possible, in part, through the support of the Friends of the Yankee Brass Inc. a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Additional financial support is provided by concert sponsorships and the generous contributions of individuals.
