Harley Young Artists: Willow Weaving with Rachel Hutton | The Harley Gallery
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Worksop
Spend an afternoon working with professional basketmaker Rachel Hutton and weave your own wall hanging using willow, dried flowers and other natural materials. In this workshop, young people aged 11-16 will learn traditional weaving techniques, using a style inspired by Catalonian platters – the same type of weave often used as the base of a basket. Starting in the Harley Gallery, young people will explore our exhibition Basketry: Rescuing, Reviving, Retaining, taking inspiration from the huge variety of baskets on display. Heading outside (weather dependent), they will learn how to choose and prepare willow. They’ll experiment with pattern, texture, and colour to weave a finished wall hanging that reflects their own creative style. Please wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothes and footwear for this session. In the event of poor weather, the workshop will take place inside. The Harley Young Artists series gives young people a chance to work with professional artists. It is an opportunity to develop skills and gain an insight into a range of creative careers. Rachel HuttonThis session is taught by Rachel Hutton. Raised on the edges of Sheffield and inspired by the woodlands of the Peak District, Rachel has built a career around traditional crafts and working with nature. After leaving a career in education, she now weaves, coppices, and teaches heritage skills, with a deep passion for basketry and woodland crafts. She is also the founder of Hedgerow Hare, creating natural soaps and cosmetics inspired by wild plants and willow. RegistrationDrop your child off for this session in the Harley Gallery.
