Cloudbusting and Weather Folklore - Guided Educational Walk | Exact Meeting point to be confirmed
Jul 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Shorncliffe
Do you know your cumulus from your cirrus? Ever wondered whether there’s truth in the old saying,
"When swallows fly high, it will be dry"
? Join us for a fascinating guided walk exploring the skies above Sheriff’s Lench, where we’ll uncover the secrets of cloud formations and the folklore that has shaped our understanding of the weather for centuries.
Led by Forest Team Member
Ed
Leszczynski
, this walk will take you through the open landscapes of Sheriff’s Lench, offering plenty of opportunities to observe the sky and discuss what the clouds might be telling us. Depending on the conditions, we may spot:
Cumulus
– Those fluffy, cotton-like clouds that often dot the sky on fair weather days.
Cirrus
– Wispy, feather-like clouds high in the atmosphere, often signaling a change in the weather.
Stratus
– Low, grey clouds that blanket the sky, sometimes bringing drizzle.
Nimbus
– Rain-bearing clouds that can bring anything from a light shower to a heavy downpour.
As we walk, we’ll delve into old weather proverbs and their connections to nature. Have generations of farmers and sailors been onto something with their observations, or is it all just myth? This is a fantastic opportunity to discover how to read the sky and understand the natural signs of changing weather.
Terrain & Suitability:
The walk will cover rough grassland and some steep, uneven sections. It is unlikely to be suitable for those who are unsteady on their feet. Stout shoes or boots are essential.
Weather Dependent:
As fitting for a weather-themed walk, the event itself is subject to the elements. If conditions are unsuitable, we will reschedule.
Come and explore the ever-changing sky with us and gain a whole new appreciation for the weather that shapes our landscapes!
