The Deering Estate’s engaging Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program has launched the application for the 2026 season. A call to artists is currently available for visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary arts and artists are invited to apply before the August 31, 2025, 11:59 pm EST deadline. Anton Chekhov Scene Study, a donation-based workshop led by Adult Film artistic director Ryan Czerwonko at The Woods in Queens, will delve into scenes from Chekhov's major plays. Eight actors will be selected to work on scenes from each of Chekhov's four major plays, receiving critiques and guidance from Ryan. Drawing from AF's in-depth exploration of SEA GULL, Ryan's process will enhance the actors' understanding and performance. Audience members are welcome to attend for free or contribute a donation of their choice. This initiative is in conjunction with our upcoming 2nd Annual Hoop it up Showcase, which celebrates the incredible talent found right here in our community. ABOUT ALEXIS BARD JOHNSON Alexis Bard Johnson is the Curator at the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries. She oversees the exhibitions, programs, and art collection at one of the largest repositories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer materials in the world. She most recently curated Sci-fi, Magick, Queer L.A.: Sexual Science and the Imagi-Nation, as part of the Getty’s PST ART: Art and Science Collide. Her previous exhibitions include Robert Andy Coombs: No Content Warning, Looking for Lesbians and Archival Intimacies: Queering South/East Asian Diasporas. Johnson earned her PhD in Art History with a minor in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Stanford University. Her essay, “The Work of Being Sexed: Andy Warhol on Drag,” appeared in Contact Warhol: Photography Without End (MIT, 2018). She also contributed to the revised edition of Art and Queer Culture (Phaidon, 2019). Her essay, “Queer Visibility: Photography in American Print Culture, 1945-1980” is forthcoming in the Getty Museum’s Queer Lens exhibition catalog. Before joining the ONE Archives, Johnson worked at the Princeton Art Museum, the Whitney Museum, and the Terra Foundation for American Art.
