For this Dance Historian Is In, an accomplished documentary filmmaker joins an expert on the modern flamenco scene to show a sneak preview of an exciting, soon-to-be-released flamenco documentary, and present an overview of contemporary flamenco dance. For more than 10 years, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division's extensive collection, through which he unearthed many treasures, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. Today, we honor his memory and work by inviting dance historians from all over the world each month to carry on the tradition of highlighting dance history through the Dance Division's moving image collection. This event will take place online via Zoom as well as in person at The Library for the Performing Arts. *A streaming link will be emailed to everyone on the morning of the event for those wishing to attend virtually. Please sign up for only one category even if you are willing to perform multiple roles. Since 2014, The Billy Rose Theatre Division at the Library for the Performing Arts has presented Across a Crowded Room, a free, annual program that provides a space for musical theatre makers to network, create new work together, and develop their skills. In the first meeting participants will get to know each other and form groups of three to work together over the course of the summer. This year, we are also going to add a second meet up session where directors and actors will meet each other and join existing teams. In additional sessions, this year held in person in the Harvey Fierstein Lab, participants will present their work to established composers, lyricists, and bookwriters for feedback and advice. The program will conclude with an in-person presentation of the musicals at the Library for the Performing Arts this fall. Danspace Project’s Platform series has been a signature program for 15 years. Designed by Danspace Project executive director and chief curator Judy Hussie-Taylor, the Platform series was conceived as “exhibitions that unfold over time” providing context for contemporary dance and performance practices. The Platforms explore curation as a process of collaboration with artists. This conversation, part of Danspace's year-long celebration of their 50th anniversary, features Hussie-Taylor, Danspace Program director and associate curator Seta Morton, and some of the artists who have curated the series in recent years, including Okwui Okpokwasili, Eiko Otake, and Reggie Wilson.
