P LEASE NOTE THAT THE DURATION OF THIS EVENT SHOWN ABOVE IS ONLY APPROXIMATE AND CANNOT BE GUARANTEED; IT WILL DEPEND ON FACTORS SUCH AS THE WEATHER AND THE WALKING PACE OF THE GROUP. Join this leisurely ramble with a Birmingham Ramblers group leader and enjoy social walking with our friendly members. It is very helpful for the walk leader to have prior knowledge of numbers that will be on this walk. We ask you to complete this very brief form to help with our planning of the walk to ensure that we can safely accommodate all who wish to join us. You will receive an automatic acknowledgement when you submit this form, and also a reminder of the details 2 days before the walk. If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you. Please note that some walks have a waiting list so this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you. Walk leader: Brenda Cameron Meeting arrangements: If travelling by train: Meet at Bournville station at 10.30 am Train leaves Birmingham New Street (usually from platform 12 but check first) at 10.15 am, stopping also at stations along the line. If travelling from Longbridge it’s the 10.22 am from platform 1, stopping also at stations along the line. If travelling by bus: The outer Circle buses 11A and 11C stop at Linden Road/Bournville Lane. Please alight here and meet the group at the nearby crossroads of Bournville Lane and Linden Road at approximately 10.50 am. If driving: There is the shoppers’car park off Sycamore Road opposite Bournville Green; also some roadside parking in Sycamore Road. Walk Description: The first part of the walk is along a pleasant streamside path through Bournville Park followed by a brief walking tour of Bournville Village which takes in some of the distinctive architecture of the area. Most of the houses we see are owned by Bournville Village Trust, founded in 1900 by George Cadbury with a focus on providing good quality housing in a green environment. About halfway through the walk we pause for a refreshments/toilets break at a coffee shop on the Green or eat your own snack on the benches around. Next, we follow the public access route of the Cadbury factory on our way to Cotteridge Park which has an impressive collection of glacial erratic rocks scattered throughout the park. These “glacial erratics” travelled via a glacier from north Wales up to 400,000 years ago and were left behind when the ice melted. We will see a good selection of these rocks. We leave Cotteridge Park behind as we head back towards Bournville Green, on the way taking a walk around the compact Cadbury Park which was formerly the Cadbury girls’ recreation ground dating from the time when workers were kept separate in their leisure time. It’s an interesting little park with remains of some original features. Here the walk finishes with refreshments available on the Green for those who wish before their journey home. 4.75 miles. Break at Kafeinon halfway through. Expressions of Interest for this walk will close at 06.00 on Tuesday 26 August. After this, pleaseemail bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.comto enquire about any late availability for the walk. ==================================================== If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you. Please note that some walks have a waiting list so tickets are NOT TRANSFERABLE; if you are unable to join us then please cancel your place to free it up for someone who may be on the waiting list rather than passing it to someone else. General Information This is one of several walks and activities offered by the Birmingham Ramblers. If you have found this page through a web search or other means and would like to find out more about the group then please visit the Birmingham Ramblers web site; new members are always welcome. Cultural Experiences
Go to any ancient building in the West Midlands and there will be interesting, exciting, and romantic stories presented to the visitor. They are commonly believed and widely repeated – but are they really true? These stories include those of secret passages linking ancient buildings, spiral staircases in castles giving advantage to right-handed defenders, ship timbers used in the construction of buildings on land, blocked doors in churches which are thought to keep the Devil out and claims to be the oldest pub in the region. James will explain the development of such myths and investigate the underlying truths behind them. Sometimes the realities hiding behind the stories are even more interesting, romantic, and exciting than the myth itself… The speaker, James Wright (Triskele Heritage), is an award-winning buildings archaeologist. He has two decades professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens. He hopes to find meaningful truths about how ordinary and extraordinary folk lived their lives in the mediaeval period. He is the author of the book Historic Building Mythbusting which was released via The History Press in June 2024. Information Source: Selly Manor Museum | eventbrite

Join us for this heritage talk with Catherin Hindson. A balance of Work and Play was at the centre of Cadbury’s commitment to their employees’ well-being, with the Bournville factory a site of ground-breaking approaches to staff mental and physical health and education. Amongst the recreational and educational activities Cadbury’s offered employees were theatre, literature, music and the fine arts; pastimes and classes that encouraged and drew on their imagination and creativity. In this talk, Catherine Hindson will explore the first decades of Bournville Dramatic Society and their close connection with the early years of Birmingham Repertory Theatre, alongside the roles drama played at Woodbrooke College, Fircroft College and the Girls Day Continuation School. This is a follow-up to a talk given by Catherine Hindson in 2024. At the earlier talk the scene was set and the early story of Bournville's dramatic endeavours covered. In this new talk the story will unfold further. Catherine Hindson is Professor of Theatre History at the University of Bristol and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her research focuses on how theatre can help us to understand the past, and has included writings on theatre and celebrity, heritage, ghosts, and well-being. She has previously published two books, Female Performance Practices on the fin-de-siècle stages of London and Paris (2007) and London’s West End Actresses and the Origins of Celebrity Culture, 1880-1920 (2016). She is currently working on women leaders in early twentieth century industry and their connections with arts and creativity. She also really likes chocolate! This heritage talk takes place at 7pm on Thursday 17th July 2025 , and lasts for about an hour followed by a Q+A. Admission includes a chance to explore Selly Manor Museum so please do come early to enjoy the Tudor manor. Refreshments are also included. Venue Selly Manor Museum, Maple Road, Bournville, B30 2AE Cost £7 per person. The talk takes place in the medieval hall of Minworth Greaves which is on the grounds floor and is wheelchair accessible.
