Featured Events in Brussels in April, 2025 (June Updated)

How have artists from Africa and its vast diaspora depicted daily life over the past century? Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, and her team have sought to answer this question with a landmark exhibition. Bozar proudly presents this vast kaleidoscope of Black figurative painting from the 1920s to the present day.  Inspired by Ava DuVernay's series When They See Us, the exhibition title "When We See Us" reflects a fundamental perspective exploring Black self-representation and global Black subjectivities. The approximately 150 works by around 120 artists are grouped into six themes: "The Everyday”, "Joy & Revelry”, "Repose”, "Sensuality”, "Spirituality”, and "Triumph and Emancipation”.  By focusing on these themes, the exhibition offers a rich, nuanced view of Black life and thought, emphasising the resilience, essence, and political charge of Black joy. It highlights relationships between artists and artworks across geographic, generational, and conceptual contexts, fostering a deeper understanding of a complex and underrepresented genealogy rooted in African and Black modernities. When We See Us encourages discussion on Black liberation and intellectual movements and celebrates experiences from Africa and the African diaspora contributing to the art historical canon. 

Claude Renard has left an indelible mark on Belgian comic book history. Yet he is not so well known to the general public. He was an illustrator, sculptor, graphic designer, designer, scenographer and set and costume designer for theatre, but above all he was the extraordinary inspirer of the Atelier R in St-Luc Brussels. There, in the 1970s, he trained an exceptional generation of comic book creators, whom he introduced to the world in the legendary magazine Le 9è Rêve.Six years after his death, his son Romain, together with Thierry Bellefroid, is reviving the worlds of this aesthete, whose whole life was a work of art. From his bustling studio that he transformed into a cabinet of curiosities to the furniture of his home, from the graphic design of his covers to the posters for his shows, from futuristic comics to history books, from his mineral sculptures to his fascination with Galileo, from his multifarious collections to his countless tools, Claude Renard is elusive. Like the exhibition showcasing his work, he is both whole and fragmented.With contributions from former students of Atelier R, published in Le 9è Rêve, including François Schuiten, Andréas, Sokal, Berthet, Chantal De Spiegeleer, Séraphine, Foerster, Alain Goffin, Anne Baltus and many others.

It all started exactly 25 years ago with a fanzine for students in Brussels, ‘Le Spon’. Meanwhile, the independent, alternative and collective publisher L'employé du moi came a long way. Today, their catalogue counts more than 130 original creations.
