The 2022 version of the stage play "Fifteen Days in the Two Capitals" is adapted from Ma Boyong's historical novel of the same name. With a length of 700,000 words, more than 170 characters, and more than 2,200 miles of starry night driving, meticulous details, vivid characters, and continuous plot reversals, this work, which was only published in 2020, has quickly become one of the "masterpieces" in the hearts of book fans.
The whole story originated from a true record about Zhu Zhanji in the History of Ming Dynasty: "In the fourth month of summer, due to repeated earthquakes in Nanjing, he was ordered to stay there. On the Gengchen day of the fifth month, Emperor Renzong was ill, and he was summoned back by imperial edict. On the Xinchou day of the sixth month, he returned to Liangxiang, received the will, and entered the palace to announce the funeral."
Behind these few short lines in the history books lies the fact that in that era when transportation was very slow, it took only 15 days to travel the 2,200-mile distance from Nanjing to Beijing.
