Making Space: Histories of Architecture and Motherhood | Zaha Hadid Foundation

Jun 24, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bowling Green
Arts
How do we tell histories of motherhood and architecture in the UK? How has motherhood affected women’s existence, experience, and representation in architecture? How have motherhood norms and expectations, and the idea of the nuclear family, been shaped by architecture? What are the ways that mothers, as architects or otherwise, have made space for themselves, their families, and communities? How have women given voice to their experiences as makers and maintainers of domestic space? This salon brings together architecture and design practitioners and researchers exploring histories of architecture and motherhood in twentieth century Britain. Combining new research with individual experiences, these speakers will consider the relationship between professional and personal selves. Speakers: Anne Thorne, Cathy Hawley, Marianna Janowicz, Alex Banister, Cat Rossi and Kim Trogal. Yale x ZHF Talk: Anupama Kundoo - Rethinking Materiality’ | Zaha Hadid Foundation

Jun 3, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bowling Green
Arts
Yale School of Architecture and the Zaha Hadid Foundation will host a talk by award-winning architect Anupama Kundoo. 'Rethinking Materiality: Human Resourcefulness and Natural Resources' Anupama Kundoo discusses how architectural imagination must transcend design and enter the realms of materials science and economics where some of the bigger questions reside. Through extensive material research and experimentation we rethink materiality and critically examine the way the time value of money has nudged us towards code-based design and the industrialized production of building components and instead look at consumption of finite natural resources alongside their impact on human wellbeing and human resourcefulness. The act of building produces knowledge just as the resulting knowledge produces buildings. BiographyAnupama Kundoo graduated from University of Mumbai in 1989 and received her PhD degree from TU Berlin in 2008. Her research-oriented practice started in 1990 in Auroville has generated people centric architecture based on spatial and material research for low environmental impact while being socio-economically beneficial. Her body of works was recently exhibited as a solo show 'Taking Time' at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark. She has taught Architecture and Urban Management at various international universities strengthening her expertise in rapid urbanization and climate change related development issues including at Yale University and Columbia University. She is currently Professor of Architecture at T.U. Berlin. She received the RIBA Charles Jencks award for her contribution to architectural theory, the 2021 Auguste Perret Prize for architectural technology, the 2021 Building Sense Now global award of the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB, and the Global Award for Sustainable architecture under UNESCO patronage in 2022. Her studios are based in Berlin in Germany, and Mumbai and Pondicherry in India. Kundoo’s rigorous research and experimentation in new materiality for architecture is the result of questioning basic assumptions, construction habits that humanity has adopted during the long process of industrialization. Rather than focussing on shortage, she sought abundance through investing in human resources and human resourcefulness, such as ingenuity, time, skills, care and sense of community. Encounters with Umbrella House: new voices on Kazuo Shinohara | Zaha Hadid Foundation

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bowling Green
Arts
While post-war Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara is celebrated across Japan, the US and continental Europe, he remains little known in the UK. He pioneered the idea that ‘A House is Art’ but artistic responses to his architecture have so far been scarce. His designs for single-family houses reconfigured people’s understanding of domesticity but commentary on his work has excluded the voices and positions of women. In the centenary year of Shinohara’s birth, London-based artist Michaela Nettell is creating a book that brings together fresh interpretations of his 1961 Umbrella House by a group of women working across fine art, filmmaking, creative writing, architecture and Japanese calligraphy. Join the artist and her collaborators to hear more about their research, and pick up a copy of her newly-published pamphlet ‘A totally different world.’ The artist’s 8mm film study of Umbrella House will be screened alongside excerpts from Emily Richardson’s HOUSE WORKS, a trilogy of artist’s films about prototype houses built in East Anglia in the 1960s by architects known to be interested in cultural currents in Japan. Event chaired by architectural writer and curator Yuki Sumner. Attendance is free but booking essential. Venue informationEntry to the building:Access to the site and building is via the black metal gate facing onto the street. If this gate is closed, please use the intercom to the right of the gate and wait for a reply. The door will then open automatically. We'll walk around the Grove finding elements to include, and we'll create small individual pieces and a group mandala, as a gift to the Grove. All materials and tools will be supplied, but if you have something special from your garden, or a token you would like to add to our group mandala, you are welcome to. Dress in layers.
