jazz @ temperance | Southern Beauty ft. Alison Wheeler (Ex Beautiful South) | Temperance

Jun 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Royal Leamington Spa
Concerts
We welcome former lead singer from the Beautiful South who will be bringing her new band, Southern Beauty to Temperance. They will be playing Beautiful South songs, in an avant-garde jazz style together with other classic jazz standards. This will be a very special concert and another not to be missed. Alison Wheeler has carved out a stellar reputation for herself in the fiercely competitive music industry through her exceptional vocals, unparalleled song-writing abilities, and captivating stage presence that mesmerises fans across the globe. Hailing from Daventry, England, Alison's love for music was ingrained in her from a young age by her parents, who introduced her to a wide array of music genres ranging from pop and rock to jazz and blues. Alison's music career kicked off at Cambridge University, where she formed a covers band called Melt City with successful record producer - Hal Ritson of The Young Punx and Kev Dowd of Lowbrow & Topers. Moving to London in 1995, she joined the indie band Junk (with founding member of The South - Phil Barton), where she quickly gained a reputation on the Camden and Islington gig circuit. This culminated in her joining the girl band Virginia in 1998, which led to appearances on BBC Radio, TV shows in Northern Ireland, and success in the US airplay charts. In 2002, Alison's work with London gospel band Citizen K brought her to the attention of Dave Hemingway of the Beautiful South. She collaborated with Hemingway on his solo project, and he recommended her to Paul Heaton, the driving force behind the Beautiful South, to replace departed band member Jacqui Abbott. With the release of "Gaze" in 2003, Alison became a permanent member of the Beautiful South and during her time with the band she headlined Glastonbury Festival, supported Robbie Williams at Croke Park, toured the world and appeared on numerous TV & Radio shows in the UK. When The Beautiful South split in 2007 due to ‘music similarities’, The South rose from it’s embers and over the past 14 years they have continued to celebrate the sound of The Beautiful South with Alison fronting the band over hundreds of performances throughout the UK and Europe. Alison continues to write, collaborate and perform in several successful projects, including The South, Topers, Action Amanda (with a no.1 on the iTunes Charts), and Southern Beauty. She has built a loyal fan base and earned critical acclaim for her work. Despite her numerous triumphs, Alison remains grounded and focused on her music, always striving to connect deeply with her listeners. She continues to explore new sounds and collaborations, and recently launched Southern Beauty to reinterpret the Beautiful South's back catalogue in an avant-garde jazz style intertwined with other classic jazz standards. Alison is hoping to prolong the life of these wonderful songs and at the same time maybe bring the songs to new audiences who might not necessarily know much of this infamous British institution. Alison's versatility as a performer, combined with her immense talent, has made her a celebrated voice in British music, and her music career continues to flourish. She is a true artist who is deeply passionate about her craft, and her genuine love for music shines through in everything she does. Information Source: Temperance | eventbrite

folk-rock @ temperance | The Redhills | Temperance

Jun 8, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Royal Leamington Spa
Concerts
“An almighty folk-rock roar…It’s like Bellowhead facing off with Eddie Van Halen. But it works a treat” – Stratford Herald “They were simply stunning. They played a set of mostly traditional music but done in such a fresh and enjoyable way that I spent most of the evening grinning like a child who’s been given the keys to a sweetshop. Oh, and they rock!” - Atherstone Folk Club “Their arrangements were clever and well thought out. The exchanges between instruments were ingenious and skilfully executed: they are all clearly excellent musicians. Their two sets were a joyful demonstration of good folk music delivered with style and aplomb. Go and see them if you haven’t already. Highly recommended “ Nuneaton Folk Club “The Redhills played to an enthusiastic crowd who danced to every moment of their set. A huge Thank You” -Jagfest THE REDHILLS The Redhills are based in Warwickshire and have been playing traditional music in their current line up since 2015 Playing “louder and prouder” than your average folk rockers, the overall effect is of a lively & tight rock band, but there can be almost anything from the traditional music canon of the British Islands folded into their arrangements – a song of the sea, lively jigs and reels, a broadsheet tale of ‘orrible infamy and murder, a street cry or a hornpipe. Often several of the above in one number! They occasionally drop in the odd original song, a folky cover, a Zappa number or a dub arrangement of a trad piece when the mood takes them.. The band have played at both mainstream folk and “non folky” festivals and clubs, bars, pubs and other events all over the midlands and further afield. Redhills performance are always lively, energetic and fun. Several reviewers have described their music as “infectious” (in a nice way!) and it is not uncommon to see audiences get up and spontaneously start to dance. The Redhills are: Maria Barham (vocals, acoustic guitar and whistles), Jim Black (guitars and vocals), Nick Ellison (Fiddle, Mandolin and vocals), Nick Mew (bass, guitars, vocals) and Nate Walker (Percussion). blues club @ temperance | The Swaps // Stevie Watts // Ben Holder | Temperance

Jun 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Royal Leamington Spa
Concerts
Our blues club nights have become one of our most popular evenings of the month. And deservedly so too. They get better and better and, in December, it was a real Christmas cracker. What a brilliant evening. There were many highlights, but “Sweetheart” was a particular favourite. A great Swaps song taken to another level with the Hammond organ of Stevie Watts , percussion from Ben Haines , guitar from Jason Page and harmonica from Tomohiro Sugisaka (Tomo). Check out the video above. The best version of this song we have heard. Wonderful stuff. Like many events these days, our blues clubs are now sold out for January, February, March, April AND May. So, we are reasonably confident that the June one will sell out too. And probably very quickly. We have been working on the line-up and this is going to be another very special one. This will feature The Swaps (and, if the stars align, Tomo), the return of Stevie Watts on keys (hopefully with Shanade too) and the debut blues club appearance of Ben Holder , a word-class violinist. And maybe some other surprises... Ben is no stranger to Temperance – he has performed here a few times with John Coghlan (original drummer with Status Quo). He will be bringing his own jazz swing trio in January (that too has sold out). Usual format with different permutations to keep the sound guy guessing and an all-star jam at the end. Get 'em quick. TwoManTing was formed in 2004 when Sierra Leonean drummer Jah-man Aggrey, and guitarist Jon Lewis were playing together as part of dance band, Le Cod Afrique, at venues such as Montreux Jazz Festival and WOMAD. The duo immediately became a hit on the UK festival circuit with their brand of bouncy “Sunshine Afro-roots”. Shows have included Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness and Green Man Festivals to name but a few. Using guitar, live loops and percussion the duo creates a highly danceable full band sound and their reputation has earned them recent support slots with the likes of Tinariwen, The Oyster Band, Edward 2 and Dub Colossus. Their music is often featured on BBC Radio 3 and 6Music. Shows feature palm-wine, acoustic dub and highlife grooves with thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics on subjects ranging from childhood memories, political protest and er….duvets. The latest album “Rhymes with Orange” draws on a range of sounds from 1970s Sierra Leone to 1980s UK punk through to the Soukous beats of the Congo. “Brilliant – if you want a bit of early summer, then get this into your ear-holes!” (Lauren Laverne, BBC 6Music) “John Peel would play something like this on his programme and the world would suddenly seem a better place” (Steve Lamacq, BBC 6Music) Information Source: Temperance | eventbrite
