Elms - their ecology and identification with Brian Eversham | The Manor House

Elms - their ecology and identification with Brian Eversham | The Manor House

Jul 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Cambourne
Cultural Experiences
Central and eastern English elms are the most diverse in Europe perhaps because recolonization routes at the end of the Ice Age converged here and hybridization produced new forms. Previous books have included 1-8 species, plus sub-species hybrids and varieties. The latest flora (2018) names 62 British species, most of which are found in our area. They are distinctive in growth form, leaf shape, seed shape and in their associated insect species. Most still grow into large, handsome trees despite Dutch elm disease. This workshop will introduce elms, their history, ecology, genetics and associated wildlife and a new key to the 40-50 local species. Join Wildlife Adventurer Becca Badger for an adventurous stroll around Cambourne Nature Reserve. We'll stop for a story and do some simple outdoor activities for toddlers along the way. These are sociable, fun, relaxed sessions, where we might jump in puddles, climb trees, or make a den. These small-group, pre-school session, work best for families with children from 2 to 4 years old, although we are flexible. In order to keep group sizes small, each adult may only bring 2 toddlers (younger siblings are welcome, please ask if you wish to bring an older sibling) Additional information Please refer to our event terms and conditions webpage for details on refunds and cancellations, as well as general information about how we run our events The benefits of joining the Wildlife Trust BCN include a reduced rate for events. Family membership is from £5 a month. This is a family event so children need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. The activities are designed for everyone to enjoy. There are no toilet facilities available for this session. The closest public toilets are at Morrison’s nearby. Adults and siblings under 18 months who are accompanying a paid-for child are free We aim to make our sessions as accessible as possible and are happy to make reasonable adjustments to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy them. Please contact us to discuss your accessibility needs. You will need long sleeves and long trousers to avoid bites, stings and scratches, and sensible shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. Be prepared for mud and weather! Paths around Cambourne Nature Reserve are mostly flat and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. We may stray slightly from the path into more muddy and uneven areas. The meeting point is Cambourne Nature Reserve car park, off School Lane, between Fenbridge and Quidditch Lane. This is a public carpark, it is not usually busy but spaces cannot be guaranteed. Willows are our most important family of wetland trees and shrubs. The day will introduce the ecology and importance of willows for conservation. Often considered a ‘difficult’ group, a single day is sufficient to become familiar with the principal species and common hybrids in our area. By looking first at samples of the ‘pure’ species, a simple-to-use key to the local species should enable participants to identify most species quickly and easily.
