Spend a morning working with professional artist Ian Kirkpatrick and create a new piece of public art which will be displayed outside the Harley Gallery.In this workshop, young people aged 11-16 will explore Ian’s exhibition ICONOCLASH – delving deeper into his world of street signs, bright colours, and dystopian worlds. Using his artworks as a springboard, they will learn how to tell stories with pictures, and express their ideas about the past, present and future. Crafting their own images out of reflective vinyl, they will build up a collective design that explores their hopes, fantasies and fears for the future. This outdoor mural will then be displayed outside the Harley Gallery for the duration of the exhibition. The Harley Young Artists series gives young people a chance to work with professional artists. It is an opportunity to develop skills and gain an insight into a range of creative careers. Ian KirkpatrickCanadian-British artist Ian Kirkpatrick uses graphic design software to produce intricate 2D and 3D artworks out of materials including stainless steel, corrugated cardboard, embroidery, fabric, Perspex and Dibond. Based in Leeds, Ian’s influences span from ancient cave art and Greek amphorae to graffiti and computer graphics. He has exhibited his work across the UK and internationally, with invited shows in New York, Chicago, Montreal, Berlin, Rome and London. Since 2017 Ian has been working in the public sphere, producing large-scale murals and sculptures for clients including the London 2012 Olympics, the Tour de France and the Oxford Museum of Natural History. Each Family Clay course will focus on a different project, which children will be encouraged to interpret in their own style. Check our website for more details about upcoming courses. You will need Family Clay is for children aged 7-16 and their parent or guardian, parents or guardians must stay with their child at all times. No prior pottery experience is needed. We recommend trimming long nails prior to the session, removing any jewellery, and tying back long hair. Please bring your own aprons. Additional Information The course cost includes all materials, tools and clay, plus glazing and firing of your finished pieces. We will contact you when your pots are ready to collect from our museum, this can take up to 6 weeks. If you haven’t heard from us within this time, please contact us. If your child is confident working independently, you can make your own creation by purchasing additional clay, glaze + firing as a £14 add-on. The waterfront in Leeds City Centre has a rich, interesting, and sometimes amusing history! This audio tour explores this in detail, with narration by local expert Mike. The tour begins outside Marshalls Mill in the old industrial heartland of Leeds, meanders along the river and canal side, and finishes by Leeds Minster . Take in stories of great architecture and people, as well as strange tales of ghostly happenings and witchcraft. ​Stops include additional galleries to look at old maps and images of the area and there are some optional multiple-choice quiz questions throughout the tour needing you to explore stops more closely to find the answers. Do you feel bamboozled and stuck about how to bring colour to your walls? Would you welcome some help? Book on for a colour consultation workshop where you will explore colour and styles for your home. You will be able to take home a mood board, colour samples and a selection of tester pots. This is the perfect opportunity to try multiple of their samples and along with our in-house colour expert Amy, you can discuss your colour dilemmas and learn about how to bring a scheme together cohesively. Amy, has a wealth of experience bringing colour to walls and an inbuilt intuition for colour. In her day job as a professional cleaner she has been to hundreds of homes and understands how to introduce colour and texture to create different moods to a room. She also has a great understanding of light and how this can effect colour choices and styles. ‘This was great for us to experiment with colours we wouldn’t have chosen and there were lots of pots to try and take home. We went back the following week to have big tins made up. Thanks Seagulls’. The Seagulls team have many years experience pairing colours and advising customers on their walls. In our new space we have created an amazing facility to come play and create your own paint samples to take home. For the workshop you will have access to over £500 worth of sample paint by the well known and loved company Farrow and Ball. Farrow and Ball are a Dorset based company that create the highest grade paint with low emissions, their richly pigmented paint create a beautiful lasting finish in any interior. This 3 hour crash course in decorating will equip you with all the basic techniques and skills needed to tackle a room from preparation to finish (focussing on the walls and ceiling). The workshop will take place in our pods. The pods have been built to emulate a real room setting to give you the best experience possible for learning decorating techniques. Ruksar, our in house decorator will guide you through the process from start to finish: 1. Preparation; learning how to get rid of pesky stains, the best types of fillers for different jobs. 2. Ceilings 3. Cutting in- perhaps the most important aspect of decorating to get that all important professional finish. We will spend a reasonable amount of concentrating on this technique as it’s so easy once you know how and have had some practice and you’ll never need to use masking tape again! 4. Rolling off the walls 5. Woodwork; skirting boards, windows and doors ( there won't be time for any practical practice of woodwork. These untaught sessions offer access to our fully equipped pottery studio for those with some knowledge – for example those who are taking our six-week Introduction to Pottery course, or have attended a throwing taster session. Potters can use our full range of facilities, including the wheels. Tutor Ruth Waller is on hand throughout the session to assist with any technical queries you might have, however please note that this is not a taught class. We require potters to use our clay and glazes. Our session fee is £7. Clay and firing incur an extra charge. Clay is charged at £5 for a small, 3kg bag. We charge one fee for glazing and firing, which is charged by object size. 6” cubed – £4. 9” cubed – £6. 12” cubed – £10. About Ruth Waller These sessions are run by Ruth Waller.
