Join us for a FREE big bang weekend to celebrate and commemorate the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day. Get ready for two days full of noise, flames and smoke as a range of artillery from the Second World War, including anti-tank guns, field artillery and anti-aircraft guns, are fired. This is a free event. Please pre-book an arrival time and feel free to stay and make a day of it. There will be talks about the guns plus the history of Fort Nelson and its role in the Second World War. Find out about the guns that are fired, and the drills employed. Plus there'll be static displays and object-handling opportunities. There'll even be some have-a-go activities for our younger visitors. Car parking is £3, paid for on arrival. What's On at Fort Nelson this summer Tuesday 22 July - Tuesday 2 September Junior Assault Course Daily £3.50 - pay on the door Suitable for ages 4 - 10 The assault course will also be open on the following weekends: 5 & 6 July, 12 & 13 July and 19 & 20 July. Fort Nelson is the home of the big guns of the Royal Armouries national collection of artillery. This fully restored Victorian fort is a great place to explore, with high ramparts and panoramic views, underground tunnels and a whole museum of national treasures to discover. Admission is FREE Opening times: 10:00 - 17:00 Open daily during school holidays and bank holidays. The Star Tent serves as a welcoming meeting place for parents and carers to come together with their Little Makers . Features and Donations: Handmade Cardboard Games: Donated and designed to inspire parents and spark creative ideas for at-home recycling crafts. Crisp Packet Pyramid Den: A cozy, child-sized structure made from recycled crisp packets, providing a fun and eco-friendly space for children to sit and play. Activity Mat Area: A large mat where children can move freely and enjoy engaging activities such as colouring, drawing, and interactive crafts. The cost is a donation as ArtCycle C.I.C. is a non-profit Community Interest Company dedicated to reshaping hearts and minds by transforming the way we think about waste. Fancy a Fort adventure! We are pleased offer some very special guided tours of areas not normally open to the public. This massive Victorian fort still holds many secrets, come and explore its hidden depths with our expert guides and take the opportunity to see Fort Nelson from a different angle. Hard hats will be provided and we recommend warm layers against the chill of the underground chambers, plus sturdy footwear to tackle the uneven ground. The area to be discovered is the East Tunnel, which has not been opened to the public for over 20 years and is still unrestored. Unfortunately the tour area is not accessible.
