The Urban Cycling 101 Day 2: Road Class in Alameda is a comprehensive program designed to enhance participants' bike handling skills, emergency maneuvers, and confidence while cycling on various streets and pathways. Conducted by certified instructors, this class offers on-road, on-bike practice sessions in small groups to ensure personalized attention and effective learning. One of the key highlights of this class is the provision of a free pair of bike lights for all participants. The class is split into two parts, with Part 1 focusing on on-the-bike drills. In this section, participants undergo a group orientation followed by on-bike sessions in a controlled environment such as a parking lot or playground blacktop. This allows them to practice bike handling and hazard avoidance skills in a relaxed setting. Part 2 of the class involves on-road group practice, where instructors guide participants through nearby neighborhoods, streets, and paths, enabling them to apply their skills in a real-world environment. While participants have the option to attend either Part 1 or both Part 1 and 2, individuals taking this class as Prerequisite #2 for a League of American Bicyclists instructor certification must complete the full class. Those interested in applying for Bike East Bay's annual instructor certification must have already passed the League of American Bicyclists' Smart Cycling Exam with a minimum score of 85%.
