Did you know there are over 200 species of solitary bee in the UK?! They are fantastic pollinators, are non-aggressive and are great to have in your garden. Several species, including leafcutter and mason bees like to nest in cavities and by building them a nest box you will be helping them to thrive in your local area. In this session, we will help you construct your own bee next box take home and provide more information about how you can help the bees in your garden. Involves the use of hand tools so close adult supervision is required. Please purchase a ticket for each box you would like to build. For example, if you would like to build a single bee box as a family, you only need to purchase one ticket. These weekly sessions for 4-11year olds are a great place for youngsters to explore, learn about nature, build confidence and gain new skills, all in the wonderful outdoor setting of the Nene Wetland's Education Area. Led by our team of Forest School trained staff, sessions will include activities such as bug hunting, natural art, conservation projects, story time and tool use, all based around the changing seasons, as well as opportunities for self-exploration and free play. Booking is essential and children must be accompanied by an adult (maximum of 2 children per adult). The sessions will take place outside in all weathers so please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Join one of our knowledgeable volunteers and explore our biggest Northamptonshire nature reserve, the Nene Wetlands. The walk may (weather permitting) include a visit to Wilson's Pits, a stunning area of lakes, meadows and reed beds which is usually inaccessible to the public to protect its sensitive wildlife inhabitants. Binoculars will be available to borrow for the duration of the walk, which starts at our Nene Wetlands Visitor Centre at Rushden Lakes Retail Park (5 hours free parking is available at the retail park). In order to keep everyone safe, please do not attend the walk if you feel at all unwell and, if you start to feel unwell during the walk, please let the walk leader know immediately. Welcome to the new Nene Wetlands Little Bugs Club! Calling all mini-wildlife explorers...Little Bugs is back in the Nene Wetlands for 2025! Come and join us for a fun morning of exploration and discovery in our education area. This group is for pre-school children (from when they can toddle to age 5) and sessions will run monthly on a Monday morning. The aim of the sessions is to build confidence being in the outdoors for both children and their guardians, helping your family to connect with nature. Enjoy crafts, story time and outdoor play in this lovely location. Activities may vary and we try to be outside for all sessions (although if weather is very bad, we may use the visitor centre instead), so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
