Theater
A CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH CULTURAL EVENT LOVE AND MARRIAGE AND NEW YORK CITY SILVER ANNIVERSARY PERFORMANCE Written, Produced and Directed by David Heron Love and Marriage and New York City is award winning Jamaican playwright David Heron’s fourth play and his biggest international success to date. Set to the magnificent music of Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly - and providing a modern day parallel to that classic tale of broken hearts and lost love- the play follows the fortunes of two Jamaican born couples living in Manhattan who get married strictly for green card purposes, only to discover- as Butterfly herself did- that no marriage is ever purely about business. Originally produced on the Jamaican stage at The Little Little Theatre in 1999, the production had its American premiere during its tour to South Florida in 2000 and in subsequent years has been performed in the USA, Canada and all over the United Kingdom. It debuted Off Broadway at The Billie Holiday Theatre in Brooklyn in 2006 and went on to become an Official Selection of the 2007 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina- the largest black theater festival in the world. Now, 25 years after its American debut, and at a time when immigration is the most controversial issue in our national discourse, Love and Marriage and New York City has never been more relevant than it is today. The play celebrates its SILVER ANNIVERSARY with this ONE NIGHT ONLY staged reading production, even while it endures as a funny and moving romantic tale that has thrilled thousands of theatre goers internationally- a testament to the universal and unifying power of love. 25 YEARS OF ACCOLADES - EIGHT International Theatre Institute (Jamaica) Actor Boy Award nominations - THREE AUDELCO AWARD nominations for Excellence in Black Theatre Off Broadway - -OFFICIAL SELECTION- National Black Theatre Festival- 2007 - LONDON PREMIERE- The Peggy Ashcroft Theatre, 2003 -TWO NATIONAL UK TOURS- 2002 and 2003 - OFF BROADWAY PREMIERE, NEW YORK- The Billie Holiday Theatre- 2006 - CANADIAN PREMIERE, TORONTO-The Harborfront Center - 2008 SUNDAY JUNE 22 - The Jamaica Performing Arts Center ( J- PAC). 153-10 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11432.
