“Canada’s next classical guitar superstar.” – CBC Music Dr. Tariq Harb’s journey to distinction in the world of classical guitar has been marked by notable achievements and unwavering dedication. With a string of accolades including top prizes in renowned competitions like the Barrios WorldWideWeb Competition, the Montreal International Classical Guitar Competition and the Tokyo International Classical Guitar Competition, Harb quickly emerged as a leading figure in his generation. Renowned for his unparalleled command of melody and emotion, Harb’s virtuosity has been lauded by luminaries in the field. TED Global praised his “masterful” performances, while Patrick Roux, Artistic Director of Guitare Alla Grande, extolled his “elegant and charismatic stage presence” and “impeccable playing.” Harb’s concert engagements span the globe, gracing stages from North America to Asia and everywhere in between. His performances in iconic venues such as the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Jordan, Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan concert hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and Carnegie Hall in New York have captivated audiences. He has also shared his expertise through masterclasses and appearances at prominent guitar festivals and as an adjudicator at music competitions worldwide. With seven solo albums to his credit, encompassing a diverse range of repertoire, Harb’s contributions extend beyond performance to include instructional videos and publications aimed at enriching the classical guitar community. As a composer and arranger, his works have garnered acclaim. His suite “Spirit,” recently published by Les Productions d’Oz, showcases his innovative approach to solo guitar composition. Furthermore, his latest endeavour, the duo project “17 Strings” alongside oud virtuoso Abdul-Wahab Kayyali, promises to push boundaries and enchant audiences anew. A Jordanian-Canadian with Palestinian heritage, Harb’s journey from a career in finance to the world stage of classical guitar is a testament to his unwavering passion and determination. With a master’s degree from McGill University, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Toronto and a faculty position at Concordia University, Harb continues to inspire aspiring musicians while enjoying support from industry-leading sponsors. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 SIGN UP HERE BC is missing its 2030 climate targets by 50%, all while the federal and provincial governments are fast-tracking pipelines and pushing LNG! And yet, with all that is happening in the world, climate organizing has lost its momentum. The goal of this conference is to reenergize the climate movement in Victoria by bringing together existing groups and new people. We will establish shared specific demands, prepare for future protests, establish best practices, and create a resilient climate activism community in Victoria. To do so, we trust that other incredible organizers will continue their work for all the other important causes. We know that everything is interconnected and that we are stronger as an alliance, so we work together whenever possible. And w e focus our efforts on climate action to ensure that there will be a livable world for everyone. Climate activism has taken a hit around the world. But here in Victoria, we are getting back up! Nocturnal Owl Monitoring - Visit the Banding Station Rocky Point Bird Observatory has banded and collected data on more than 13,000 Northern Saw-whet Owls, giving us insight into population cycles and the health of individuals and allowing us to collaborate with a continental network of researchers through data sharing. Though we have learned that Southern Vancouver Island is on an important migratory route for these birds, we know very little about their wintering and breeding locations. RPBO is exploring new technologies and partnerships that will allow us to learn more and to protect their important habitats. The owl banding season begins September 15th and ends October 31st. Please monitor the weather on the day of your visit. Adverse weather (high winds and/or rain) may require us to close our operations at short notice as it's not safe for the birds to be in the nets during such conditions. We will try to notify those signed up of any closures or cancellations, but please be aware that this may occur last minute, and we won't be able to notify you in time. There are also free tickets available for seniors, thanks to funding from The New Horizons for Seniors Program. We understand that these tickets are by no means an exhaustive look at systems of oppression that exist for people. We welcome your ideas and feedback as we work to continue learning. Please contact us if you are no longer able to attend but hold a ticket so we can make your space available to someone else and work to process your refund. You can also register for the event by calling our office at 250 383-5800 or via email by contacting welland@lifecyclesproject.ca Accessibility Access from the parking area off Stancil Lane is through a latching unlocked gate. There is a gravel/dirt path sloping downward from the gate that leads to a wide flat grassy area with picnic table seating. If you are coming from the Galloping Goose entrance, which also has a latching unlocked gate, you will find a gravel/dirt path that slopes upward to the wide flat seating area. This section of path has one small area with uneven exposed bedrock. The steepness of the path varies throughout the Orchard and is steepest at the top of the Orchard closer to the Stancil Lane entrance, and at the bottom between the Galloping Goose trail and the Orchard entrance. The pathway from the Galloping Goose to the entrance to the Orchard has several sharp turns. The Orchard has a single-stall gender-neutral composting toilet facility on site with ramp access (and currently without transfer bars). The composting toilet is located below the flat area and toward the Galloping Goose entrance. There is a hand-washing station on site (without soap) but the water is not potable. Infinite Loop Ensō for Uncertain Times A Performance and Installation by tori jones Exhibition Statement: In a room filled with breath and silent awareness, a circle is drawn — not as an object, but as an act. Ensō , the meditative brushstroke of Zen, becomes the spine of this exhibition: an ongoing gesture, deteriorating, imperfect, incomplete. Here, the enso becomes a durational practice, a climate ritual, a critique of work, a liturgy of becoming. This is not an exhibition of paintings. It is a performance of persistence. Each day, enso is practiced, drawn in ash and oil — ephemeral materials that speak to our decaying age: wildfire soot, industrial residue, plastics ground to pigment. The mark is a reminder of impermanence not as mysticism but as material fact. In an era when the planet is burning, work is fracturing our bodies and time, and spiritual life is often reduced to productivity hacks, this exhibition insists on stillness, slowness, and repetition — not as retreat, but as resistance. By inviting viewers into a space where nothing is preserved and everything is in process, Infinite Loop becomes a quiet act of mourning, meditation, and hope — a circle drawn again and again in the dust of what’s left. Location: Audain Gallery, Visual Arts Bldg. 3800 Ring Rd. Reception: Friday, Sept. 5th, 11am - 2pm Exhibition times: Sept. 2 - 6, 10am - 4pm Information Source: Tori Jones and the ArtSea Community Arts Council | eventbrite

About the organization The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, the land of the Lekwungen people— specifically the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities. Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website. Join us as Indigenous relations expert BOB JOSEPH launches his new book 21 Things You Need to Know About Indigenous Self Government: A Conversation About Dismantling the Indian Act . Following the resounding successes of his previous books, 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act and Indigenous Relations: Insights, Tips & Suggestions to Make Reconciliation a Reality , this latest book emphasizes the importance of discarding the Indian Act, as well as the seamlessness of the potential transition to self-government. Stemming from the hundreds of questions asked by readers of the original 21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act Joseph's new book sets out to open the conversation about dismantling the Indian Act and this launch is an opportunity for an open discussion about what that would look like. Given that 2026 will also mark 150 years since the Consolidated Indian Act of 1876, this discussion is more timely than ever. Bob Joseph is an initiated member of the Hamatsa Society and has inherited a chief’s seat in the Gayaxala (Thunderbird) clan, under the chief name K’axwsumala’galis. As Co-Founder and President of Indigenous Corporate Training Inc., he is a certified Master Trainer of Indigenous and Aboriginal relations, as well as a reputed author of several books and resources relating to working with Indigenous Peoples.
