Caught by the Tides | WCUW 91.3
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC-4)
Worcester
Assembled from footage shot over a span of 23 years—a beguiling mix of fiction and documentary, featuring a cascade of images taken from previous movies, unused scenes, and newly shot dramatic sequences—
Caught by the Tides
is a free-flowing work of unspoken longing, carried along more by music than dialogue as it looms around the edges of a poignant love story. The film mostly adheres to the perspective of Qiaoqiao (Jia’s immortal muse Zhao Tao) as she wanders an increasingly unrecognizable country in search of long-lost lover Bin (Li Zhubin), who left their home city of Datong seeking new financial prospects. The always captivating Zhao carries the film with her delicate expressiveness, while Jia constantly evokes cinema’s ability to capture the passage of time and the persistence of change: of people, landscapes, cities, politics, ideas.

TTRPG Wednesday — The Sword Also Speaks | The Dice Box
Jun 25, 2025 (UTC+1)
Worcester
If you're new to Tabletop Roleplaying Games, or if you just want to try something a little different, then this event might be a great choice for you. It'll be hosted every two weeks by an experienced Game Master, and the games will be one shots; meaning you can level your character and jump in and out at your leisure.
What is the Sword Also Speaks?
The Sword Also Speaks is a traditional fantasy-inspired tabletop roleplaying game that utilises a deck of playing cards over more traditional dice rolling mechanics. As players journey through the game, they'll face fantastical challenges, and the cards they draw will decide if they're a hero or if things go hilariously wrong. It's like any other TTRPG, but with more shuffling and less math.
What is a Roleplaying Game?
A roleplaying game allows players to assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. They make decisions, take on challenges by utilising their skills and abilities, and work together to tell a unique story.
What is a Game Master?
The Game Master 'GM' is the referee of the game. They will be the one guiding the players through the story and reacting to their decisions throughout. While in most games, the players will work with the Game Master to create an amazing story, in The Sword Also Speaks, the Game Master works against them when it comes to drawing cards.
What is a Trick-Taking Game?
Trick-taking is a type of game where players around a table will try to win "tricks" by placing cards on the table. In most games, the player with the highest card will win the trick and score points. The Sword Also Speaks is primarily a trick taking game, meaning when characters use their skills, they will draw cards and try to be the highest at the table.
What do you need to play?
To properly play The Sword Also Speaks, you will need to bring your own deck of traditional playing cards (including jokers). Besides that, though, we provide everything you need to play, including character sheets. You can also create a level one character before the game, or use one of our pregenerated characters instead! You can find the basic ruleset (along with details on character creation) at this link:
https://swordalsospeaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/The-Sword-Also-Speak-Playtest-Basic-Ruleset-v1.7.pdf
What makes The Sword Also Speaks different from other TTRPGs?
Besides utilising a trick-taking mechanic to resolve actions in the games, there are other key qualities that make The Sword Also Speaks unique:
- The gameplay is simple and straightforward to understand.
- There's no level cap.
- There's no classes, you create your own.
- There's no spell slots or spell levels.- There's a greater focus on character customisation.
- The game utilises a mechanic called
The Moment of Dread
to bring higher tension to the story.

Forest Bumps - Pregnancy Forest Bathing | Worcester Woods Country Park
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Worcester
Feel the need some some relaxation? Join Kirsty & I for a forest bathing session!
Our Forest Bumps session is perfect for pregnant women in their second trimester who are feeling the need to relax and unwind, reconnect with nature and meet new friends.
The session includes a free homemade snack and drink and a chance to ask questions of your two hosts - Cheryl, a Birth & Postnatal Doula and Kirsty, a certified Shinrin-Yoku practitioner.
The benefits of fresh air and nature are huge both for mum and baby and include reduced stress, improved mood, better sleep, concentration and improved sensory experience. A calm and relaxed mummy equals calm and relaxed baby.
As a massive lover of all things nature, when I met Kirsty and heard she offered forest bathing sessions it just seemed like the perfect opportunity to join forces and create a group together that would bring mums and mums to be together whilst highlighting all the benefits that nature has to offer, both to mums and their babies.
Most of us are guilty of spending too much time inside and are being drawn further and further into our devices. Sometimes we need a little reminder and a gentle nudge to notice how amazing mother nature is. Getting outside, breathing in the fresh air, using all five of our wonderful senses and noticing the little things has huge benefits that unfortunately are being forgotten. We're here to help you reconnect, relax and unwind, leaving the four walls and the screens behind!
Kirsty is a certified Shinrin-Yoku practitioner and owns Do Be Do Forest Bathing.
“Shinrin-yoku
is a Japanese phrase which translates as ‘Forest Bathing’. It is a modern approach that was first developed in the 1980s in Japan as a result of research by Miyazaki Yoshifumi and Dr Qing Li. The fundamentals of shinrin-yoku are to connect with nature through our senses. The practice encourages us to slow down and notice the natural world around us.
Extensive research reveals that Forest Bathing provides significant benefits for both mind and body. It is recognised as a powerful way to reduce stress, improve our wellbeing, and enable us to rediscover our relationship with the natural world that we are a part of.
Forest Bathing helps us immerse ourselves in the magic of nature, wherever we are. Nature is everywhere when our eyes are open to see, and Forest Bathing is a practice that helps us become more blissfully aware of it!”
Come and join us and all the benefits nature has to offer!
Once baby is born you can then move to our 'Tree Tots' session - perfect for mums and little ones.

Wellbeing for the people profession and branch annual meeting | The Hive
Jun 5, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Worcester
Chris –
Mindfulness. Chris will be discussing how mindfulness has helped him at work, and how the right culture can help the workplace. Having worked in business as a Director and being responsible for the running of the business he realised how hard it was to create a sustainable culture of safety for employees to be vulnerable about their mental health and wellbeing. The passion and experience he has had for creating a safe culture that embraced mental health and wellbeing was something he wanted to bring to other companies. So The Business of Mindfulness was born.
Chris will share tips, and tools for being mindful and looking after our health and wellbeing, as well as exploring ways in which companies can help support their employees.
Sarah (Sasi) –
Confidence. Her own experiences as well as through her connections, Sarah sees and hears so many stories about the pressures and struggles of People professionals. Depleted resilience levels, and feelings of burnout are at an all-time high, which is leading to some of us feeling chronic stress, exhaustion and compassion fatigue, and falling out of love with the People profession altogether.
Sarah believes wholeheartedly that low self-doubt, prolonged low confidence, self-belief, mental illness and burnout can be prevented. She will be discuss her journey through low confidence and mental unwellness, some tips to build confidence, the support available for People professionals, including The HR Confidence Club, a community of shared coping, reassurance, building of confidence, mutual respect, support, kindness, joy, fun, engagement, and networking.
Alan
– Raising awareness of burnout, and his personal experiences of the burnout ladder of which his book is based upon. Alan shares his views on why workplace burnout is a growing pandemic, and how the pressure on people is ever increasing. With longer hours and an inability to switch off in this ‘never off’ culture drives chronic stress.
Alan will share the early stages and symptoms of burnout, and if you feel like you are burning out, don’t despair- it is entirely possible to reclaim work-life balance and thrive in an increasingly chaotic workplace.
The Burnout Ladder® offers a new perspective on understanding the progression of burnout, and provides your roadmap to recovery. This structured programme provides insight into what stage you are at, recovery strategies, tools and support to help you regain your vitality.
Guest speakers profiles:
Chris Hopkirk:
Originally a Sales & Marketing Director involved in various SME businesses, Chris was first attracted to mindfulness to help him deal with the anxiety and stress of running a business.
Mindfulness enabled him to become aware of his reactive behaviours and by working mindfully he was able to bring an equanimity to his day-to-day engagement and ultimately was able to introduce it to his staff.
Due to this engagement, Chris saw that he could introduce mindfulness & mental health first aid into other businesses.
Ultimately he wanted to help the owners, directors, managers, and staff become happier and more engaged. This then developed into supporting companies with a sustainable mental health and wellbeing strategy.
The introduction of these strategies results in a more successful outcome for everyone, both in their business or in their personal lives
Chris is an accredited Breathworks Teacher & First Aid for Mental Health instructor.

Alan Muskett:
Alan Muskett lives in the rural county of Worcestershire. Having been a people manager for over 30 years, he has been passionate about helping people all my working life, but have only recently decided to make it a full time job.
It was about 10 years ago that he started to feel some real anxiety at work, feeling the pressure of the job and the need to perform and keep delivering. He started to doubt himself, lose sleep worrying about it (mostly unnecessarily), and panic about going to meetings and speaking in front of people - all things he had always done with very little problem.
Alan then Googled a solution and came across mindfulness - which back then he had never heard of. He took an online meditation course and almost immediately found benefits - sleeping better, he had a sense of presence and calm, and seemed to be better at not reacting badly to events.
His research led on to writing a book – The Burnout Ladder and shares the various stages, the symptoms, and tools to tackle burnout.
