BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) | Cobalt Studios

Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+1)
Sheffield
Concerts
Please note we are unable to offer refunds. You can click here to view our full refunds policy. - -- Start your ouseburn festival weekend as you mean to go on. Many of you already know BCUC, if not, simply we think they're one of the best bands in the world! --- Afro psychedelia indigenous funk, punk rock energy, gospel trance healing music to fill your soul and shake your bones – and then some! “guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul” – Okayafrica “without a doubt the best live act I saw” - Gilles Peterson --- BCUC, also known as Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees their music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. They mash up ancient & modern waves of sound, pitching rolling bass and frenetic rhythm against hypnotic chanting and Zulu vocals. A stone’s throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organised the escape of the most wanted anti-Apartheid activists of Soweto, BCUC rehearses in a shipping container-turned-community restaurant, where their indomitable outspokenness echoes in a whole new way. Like its elders, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness sees its music as a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon of political and spiritual liberation. The seven-piece band has been mesmerising audiences both locally and globally with its indigenous funk and high-energy performances that have fast made it one of South Africa’s most successful musical exports. Artistic heirs to Philip “Malombo” Tabane and Batsumi, they give contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous peoples. In addition jazz sounds of 1970s and ‘80s productions replaced by hip-hop influences and punk-rock energy, taking the listener on an intriguing epic journey, sharing their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa. They tackle the harsh realities of the voiceless, especially the plight of the uneducated workers at the bottom of the social food chain. BCUC taps into the elusiveness of the spirit world of ancestors by which they are inspired. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs. “We bring fun and emo-indigenous Afro psychedelic fire from the hood,” - BCUC vocalist Kgomotso Mokone --- Information Source: Cobalt Studios CIC | eventbrite

Beckenham
Cultural Experiences
Join us for the Sound of Shamanism event! Get ready to embark on a transformative journey into the mystical world of shamanism. Hope you can join us for our Sound of Shamanism event at Beckenham Place Mnasion, London on the Sunday 6 July at 14.30 GMT . A mix of sounds from Shamanism and Animism, this sound ceremony is a great way to experience various healing traditions, from the animist cultures of South America, to Mongolia the birthplace of Shamanism. This ceremony brings together medicine songs of the Amazon jungle, to the heartbeat of the drum of the wilds of Siberia. The use of songs and the beat of the drum have be used by ancient cultures as a way to enter the other world or the invisible realms. The sounds spark an imaginary inner world, so you can enter the dreamtime. Using the voice/songs and musical instruments Andy will expertly create a space to calm the body and experience the magical world of conscious dreaming. We create a space to hold you, allowing you to switch off from the outside world, and have time to experience your own deep inner guidance. The sound ceremony is where we can heal our bodies, detox our cluttered minds, restore balance, feel relaxed, gain new insights, have a clearer perspective and self awareness. Aquatic Plants (Rivers and Ponds) | Langford Lakes Nature Reserve, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust

Jul 22, 2025 (UTC+1)
Salisbury
Cultural Experiences
Lowland freshwater habitats such as rivers and streams often support very characteristic communities of plants, many of which can be quite challenging to identify. This course offers the chance to learn how to identify a wide range of riparian plants in the River Wylye (a small chalk river), disused gravel pits and associated wetland habitats including submerged, emergent and bankside communities of plants. Teaching techniques will focus on reliable and easily-memorable characters that can be used for much of the year. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to use a grapnel. This workshop will be suitable for beginners and improvers alike. The tutor Sharon Pilkington is a nationally recognised professional botanist, bryologist and vegetation ecologist. She is the British Bryological Society’s Recorder for Mosses, a Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland Emeritus Recorder, holds two of the highly-respected Natural History Museum Identification Qualifications (IdQs) and is a Chartered Environmentalist. What to bring Rugged footwear (walking/trail boots) or wellies Lunch, water and snacks Notebook A hand lens Collecting bags (optional) Any ID guide you are happy working with A handout can be downloaded here , which can either be printed and brought on the day, or used as a reference guide after the course. Grid Ref: SU03823692 Google Maps: click here If using bus – use the No.265 bus service between Salisbury and Bath. Nearest bus stop is 500m away in Steeple Langford. Visit www.wiltshire.gov.uk/parkingtransportandstreets. what3words: destroyer.bins.sloping Please inform us of any medical requirements/conditions we should be aware of prior to the course. In the unlikely event of extreme weather, the course will be moved to Thursday, 29th August 2024. Adverse weather This is an outdoor run course on an exposed site, and as such we request that participants bring suitable clothing including sunhats, sunblock, and full waterproofs & fleeces. As the climate breaks down, we do occasionally have severe weather where either it is very difficult to take notes due to prolonged heavy rain, or temperatures have reached a point where long exposure can be detrimental to health. In these instances, we will run a condensed version of the course, where we aim to see all the species before lunch but have less time to take notes on them. We will then give attendees free access to the corresponding online course for 24 hours, which means you can take notes and look at the species in more detail in the comfort of your home. We have built a corresponding online catalogue of courses for this purpose, and we therefore feel we can offer the same training experience while looking after attendees' welfare in the field. Therefore if you look at the forecast before the course and start panicking - don’t worry, we’ve got you! Course certificate This course can be used as part of your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). We invite attendees to download their own certificate and complete the numbers of hours spent on the course, as we are aware some attendees spend more time reading up about courses before the day, and writing their notes up and sitting the online course tests afterwards. The hours on your certificate should accurately reflect this time. Feedback from previous courses 'The pace was good and the relaxed atmosphere was good for learning' 'Based in one place but walked around to see different environments, and using easy key features to ID with' 'I think Sharon is a brilliant teacher, I found her explanation easy to understand and she kept my attention the whole day.'
