--- ABOUT THE HOLIDAY ---
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last slaves were freed in Texas – two and a half years after President Lincoln outlawed slavery. Though it didn't become a federal holiday until 2021 and a paid state holiday in Rhode Island until this year (2024). Juneteenth celebrations have a long history in the United States.
--- AFRICAN DIASPORA ---
The term "African Diaspora" refers to the widespread migration of Africans during the Transatlantic Slave Trades from the 16th to the 19th century. Millions from Western and Central Africa were relocated across the Americas and the Caribbean. In their new locations, they encountered diverse local foods and cultural influences, leading to unique culinary styles. The distinct culinary traditions of these regions are a cause for celebration and can be enjoyed by people globally.

Board Game Speed Dating - Long Live Beerworks - Providence - (Ages 25-39) | Long Live Beerworks
Jun 9, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Providence
Searching for a partner can be horrifically painful. But board games are always awesome. So what if you combined board games and finding a partner?
Picture this: You sit down for a night of games. A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics you love and discover brand new games you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. All while in a great establishment with plenty of delicious options on tap. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out.
Best case scenario: You find true love, discover some awesome board games, and make some new friends.
Bad case scenario: You accomplish only one of those three things, which is still pretty great.
Worst case scenario: There will be alcohol.
Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:
1) This event is for men & women, ages 25-39. We also have events for other age groups, an event for gay men and an event for queer women. And we're hoping to add events to serve even more people in the future! Head over to
www.quirkevents.com/rhode-island
to see what else we have to offer. (If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, you'll be able to join our mailing list and get notified about future events.
Plus, joining our mailing list gets you 50% off your first ticket purchase!)
2) To stay up to date on everything we have going on here at Quirk Events, follow us on Instagram
here!
3) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 48 hours' notice, in order to make sure we have enough time to find a replacement for you and keep the event well-populated. (Exceptions will be made for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis). After that, we're blowing the money from your ticket sale on something awesome and nonrefundable.
4) If we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold five tickets for each gender, we will cancel the event (and notify you). When we have run this event in the past, tickets have consistently sold very well, so we don't expect this to happen. But we thought we should cover this in case it came up.
5) How many games we have and which ones we use will be based in part on how many people attend, so we can't tell you for sure what we'll have right now. But the goal is for all of them to be fun, light, easy-to-learn games. Selection will include games from both the something-you-have-played-before category and the something-you-haven't-played-before category. The games are also chosen because they often tend to spark conversation and leave room for chatting with new people as you play. All games will be group games, meaning you'll get a chance to meet a handful of people with each new round.

Our annual Congress, now in its thirty-third year, is CNU’s flagship event: the premiere national event on building better places. Each year, 1500+ attendees convene to hear from speakers, participate in workshops, collaborate on projects, and learn new strategies from leaders in dozens of fields.
New England is home to some of our country’s oldest urbanism - villages, towns, and cities that have evolved through centuries of change: From economic peaks and valleys, periods of population growth and decline, and the demands of housing driven by shifting industries. Now, the region faces critical challenges as the increasingly severe impacts brought on by a changing climate lap at the shores of coastal communities and threaten flooding of inland waterways.
CNU 33 will allow attendees to examine how the region has adapted, explore the values of interdependence and community, and establish a hopeful vision for the future based on the power of New Urbanist solutions.
The central stage for this Congress will be Providence, Rhode Island: A city that has grown and changed immensely since last hosting CNU in 2006. The evolution of downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods, the transformation of the 195 corridor, the reclamation of street space for pedestrians and bikes, and innovative techniques to protect the city from coastal flooding will all be on display.
Read More About What to Expect at CNU 33 from the Local Host Committee Here
Examine the Evolution of Downcity Since the 2006 Congress Here
Providence is no stranger to CNU. As many recall, in 2006, the city was the host of CNU 14. Since then, Providence has not been idle despite the Great Recession and a historic pandemic. Throughout Downtown and many of the city's neighborhoods, progress continues. After a slow start, steady progress is occurring to infill the downtown parcels made available after the removal of the I-195 highway interchange. Downcity continues to heal from its 1980's nadir with infill projects and adaptive reuse of all stripes, including creating over 500 new apartments. Plans are in place for a complete reimagining of the State's most important civic space, Kennedy Plaza. And the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has begun working towards a complete overhaul of its Providence transit operations.
The creation of city-wide bike lanes, an award-winning pedestrian bridge, public art programs, and waterfront parks have all occurred since the city last hosted the Congress. But Providence still faces its share of problems, including persistent challenges around race and equity, lack of affordable housing, and particular vulnerability to sea-level rise and climate change. Providence is on the verge of improving its economy and leveraging innovations in governance and public process to accelerate the city's improvements even further. The timing is exceptional to host CNU as Providence needs the insight and expertise that occurs with a gathering of the world's leading urbanists, architects, policymakers, engineers, and associated professionals. The 33rd Congress will be one focused on progress and hope, an event to roll up our sleeves and work together to advance the New Urbanist movement.
