Monday 9th June 2025 | 6pm
Dr Mark Ireland, Senior Lecturer in Energy Geoscience and Associate Dean Global Partnerships, Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering, Newcastle University
Inspired by Recent Investigations in Geology (3 lectures by Prof Ansted, 1867-1868 Lecture Season)
David Thomas Ansted F.R.S. (5 February 1814 – 13 May 1880) was an English professor of geology and author of numerous books on geology.
Talk 2: Why 300-million-year-old rocks continue to be important in the 21st Century
The Palaeozoic rocks of Northern England, and in particular the sedimentary successions that are deposited within the sedimentary basins, have long been studied by geologists. The Late Palaeozoic Era, a time in Earth’s history between 420 to 251 million years ago, includes the prominent formations, recognizable along the Tyneside coast, of the Westphalian (Carboniferous) Coal Measures and the Permian Zechstein Evaporites. The significance of each formation has been described and interpreted across Northern England and continues to provide insights into the geological history of the British Isles. Notably, each of these formations has, since the 19th century, been noted for their economic significance, and in this talk, we will explore how these formations may continue to be important in our ever-changing world.
