HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Who doesn't dream of having Rick Steves' life? Traveling throughout the world for a living, cranking out best-selling guidebooks, and hosting one of the most enduring shows on PBS? Irresistible. His appeal crosses generations, demographics, politics, and those who favor wine over beer. So how did Rick catch that travel bug? In his new book, On the Hippie Trail, Istanbul to Katmandu: The Making of a Travel Writer, he tells us of this transformative journey. Forty five years later, he reflects on that trip, including adventures only a guy like Rick could get away with-- in Tehran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Rick will not only discuss The Hippie Trail, but will discuss the concept of travel as a political act, about the need to get out of our comfort zones and talk to people who live where we travel. Only then can we develop empathy and return home with a broadened cultural and social perspective. Moderator to be announced. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Help us to remain a strong community as we continue to celebrate literature by authors we love, and explore critical contemporary issues. Please donate here. Other info: No refunds on tickets or books. Books must be picked up on the night of the program.

.
Kate McKinnon is an award-winning performer and writer, known for her work in film and television. Young readers will recognize her voice role as ‘Ms. Frizzle’ in The Magic School Bus Rides Again for Netflix. She recently played ‘Weird Barbie’ in Greta Gerwig’s worldwide blockbuster hit, Barbie. She was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2012 to 2022, where she became known for her character work and celebrity impressions.
.
“It comes as no surprise that Kate McKinnon writes with the same unique sense of humor and heart that has made audiences fall in love with her time and again. Her quirky and unforgettable characters in The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science will have readers laughing out loud and plotting experiments for many generations to come.”―Chris Colfer, New York Times bestselling author of the Land of Stories series.
.
The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science is McKinnon's debut novel for young readers.
.
So, you want to be a young mad scientist. Congratulations! Admitting it is the first step. The second step is reading the (definitely true) tale of the Porch sisters…
.
Gertrude, Eugenia, and Dee-Dee Porch do not belong. They don’t belong in the snooty town of Antiquarium, where all girls have to go to etiquette school and the only dog allowed is the bichon frise. They don’t belong with their adoptive family, where all their cousins are named Lavinia and their Aunt has more brooches than books. And they certainly don’t belong at Mrs. Wintermacher’s etiquette school—they’re far more interested in science. After getting kicked out of the last etiquette school that would take them, the girls expect to be sent away for good… until they receive a mysterious invitation to new school.
,
Suddenly the girls are under the tutelage of the infamous Millicent Quibb—a mad scientist with worms in her hair and oysters in her bathtub. At 231 Mysterium Way, the pizza is fatal, the bus is powered by Gerbils, and the Dean of Students is a hermit crab. Dangerous? Yes! More fun than they’ve ever had? Absolutely! But when the sisters are asked to save their town from an evil cabal of nefarious mad scientists, they must learn to embrace what has always made them stand out, and determine what side they’re on—before it’s too late!

Challenged by the two women in his life: a Whitechapel sex worker in 1888 and his brilliant, driven, transgender assistant in 2024, Bryant is forced to confront his own benevolently patriarchal tendencies, while racing against time to save the four remaining victims. Four lives are drawn together in a sweeping, panoramic new novel from Richard Powers, showcasing the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Overstory at the height of his skills. Twelve-year-old Evie Beaulieu sinks to the bottom of a swimming pool in Montreal strapped to one of the world’s first aqualungs. Ina Aroita grows up on naval bases across the Pacific with art as her only home. Two polar opposites at an elite Chicago high school bond over a three-thousand-year-old board game; Rafi Young will get lost in literature, while Todd Keane’s work will lead to a startling AI breakthrough.
They meet on the history-scarred island of Makatea in French Polynesia, whose deposits of phosphorus once helped to feed the world. Now the tiny atoll has been chosen for humanity’s next adventure: a plan to send floating, autonomous cities out onto the open sea. But first, the island’s residents must vote to greenlight the project or turn the seasteaders away.
Set in the world’s largest ocean, this awe-filled book explores that last wild place we have yet to colonize in a still-unfolding oceanic game, and interweaves beautiful writing, rich characterization, profound themes of technology and the environment, and a deep exploration of our shared humanity in a way only Richard Powers can.

Steve McCurry: The Endless Traveler | Santa Monica
Jan 27–Apr 27, 2024 (UTC-8)ENDED
Santa Monica
Steve McCurry is universally recognized as one of today's finest image-makers and has won many of photography's top awards. Best known for his evocative color photography, McCurry captures the essence of human struggle and joy. As a member of Magnum Photos since 1986, he has sought and found the unforgettable; many of his images have become modern icons, his most popular photograph of the unidentified Afghan refugee girl with the striking green eyes. Born in Philadelphia, McCurry graduated cum laude from the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. After working at a newspaper for two years, he left for India to freelance.
It was in India that McCurry learned to watch and wait on life. "If you wait," he realized, "people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view." His career was launched when he disguised in native garb and crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. When he emerged, he had rolls of film sewn into his clothes and images that would be published around the world which were among the first to show the conflict there. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise.
Steve McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including Burma, Sri Lanka, Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War, the former Yugoslavia, and continuing coverage of Afghanistan and Tibet. He focuses on the human consequences of war, not only showing what war impresses on the landscape, but rather, on the human face.
