Duration 5 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. 10am - 3pm. Tea and coffee breaks are optional. Lunch is not provided so please bring lunch with you, there are places nearby to grab some lunch if needed. Please this course is designed for people over 18 years old. We now run Young Makers courses for under 18's full listings can be found on Eventbrite. Where is the course run? Leeds Wood Recycling Warehouse, Unit 6, 24 Croydon Street, Holbeck, Leeds, LS11 9RT What skill level should I be? The course is designed to build on the skills and techniques you have learnt in our Introduction to Woodwork - Hand Tools 1 course. Please make sure you have completed our Hand Tools 1 course as we like to ensure everybody is at a similar skill level. We do this to make sure all participants get the most out of the day and can learn as much as possible. What will I learn? After learning how to use the basic tools such as saws and drill on the previous course, participants will venture into more advanced tools and joinery. We will demonstrate how to produce three of the most common joints found in furniture and cabinet making. You will use a new range of hand tools such as chisels and learn different ways of marking and measuring to create some basic joints of your own. As with all of our courses we try to answer all of the questions we can as we know people come to these courses with a project in mind. There are no silly questions! What else is included Another main aim of this course is to empower people to be able to complete their own jobs or projects at home and give them confidence in their own woodworking ability by developing skills. We want to make people comfortable using timber yards, tool suppliers and places such as Leeds Wood Recycling Who is the tutor? We have a pool of experience makers from a range of backgrounds, such as furniture/ cabinet makers and restorers, luthiers, picture framers, eco and site builders and joiners. What do I need to bring? All tools are supplied. Lunch is not supplied so make sure you've got some with you. Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work and sensible shoes. We provide the hot drinks and biscuits for the break. Please bring warm clothing – we recommend you bring layers – it can be cold in our workshop even in summer.. It's also a good idea to bring a notepad and pencil so you can make notes! Where can I park my car or bike? There is free car parking opposite LWR (it’s free to use for LWR participants.) You're welcome to bring your bike in the warehouse to keep it safe. A small note Leeds Wood Recycling is a social enterprise and not-for-profit organisation, so it’s good to know that by enrolling on a course with us you are supporting your local community. We offer up to 2 free places per course as a thank you to our long-term volunteers and members of staff. This experience gives people who are marginalised from the job training market free experience and training which can help them develop and make positive changes in their lives. We promise to continue diverting wood waste from landfill and continue to support marginalised individuals creating a supportive community. For cancellation and refund information please see our full terms and conditions Full Terms and Conditions can be found at www.leedswoodrecycling.co.uk/courses Please this course is designed for people over 18 years old. Cultural Experiences
This course is designed to get you as involved as possible - this includes identifying, picking and tasting a range of wild species that will be found on the day. There will also be samples of wild food for everyone to get stuck into! The focus with all of our workshops is on the 4 'F's of Foraging: Fungi, Fruit, Flowers and Foliage . We aim for an array of these elements on every session we run (weather and season permitting!) Event sold out or can't make this date? Head to www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops or view our Eventbrite profile to browse all available sessions. What To Expect Our 'Taster' events are our shortest workshops, open to anyone looking for a brief but informative introduction to the wonderful world of foraging. No formal food is provided, but there will still be plenty of tasting along the way. DURATION: 2 hours We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop: a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild. our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy purposes but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group. What happens when a brain is wired for both structure and spontaneity, for deep focus and constant novelty? When someone lives at the intersection of autism and ADHD – known as AuDHD – the result can be a unique but often misunderstood neurotype. Join us in exploring what it means to be AuDHD, especially for women, whose presentations often go unnoticed for years. We’ll break down how ADHD and autism overlap, how they can contradict or camouflage each other, and how to begin untangling your own unique profile. Grounded in science, lived experience, and strengths-based psychology, this talk offers both understanding and practical strategies. You’ll explore how to identify and separate your ADHD and autistic needs. Whether you're newly navigating the AuDHD landscape, have long suspected your neurodivergence, or are supporting someone you care about, you’ll leave this talk with greater clarity for living more in sync with your neurotype. Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks Speaker Bio: Dr Rebecca Jackson is an AuDHD positive psychology coach and research practitioner. She runs a hopeful and energetic coaching practice for ADHD and/ or autistic people seeking to understand who they are, what they want and need, and how they can bring it about with agency, sovereignty, and choice. Rebecca researches the enjoyment, safe enough-ness, and efficacy of positive psychology coaching for AuDHDers, and the role of story, play, game, and imagination in coaching. She is anti-toxic positivity, anti-toxic productivity, and pro self-acceptance and drawing down self-chosen benefits of enjoyment, curiosity, play, and interest, even at difficult times. When she’s not thinking about coaching, Rebecca is out walking, playing Dungeons & Dragons, snorkelling, singing to cheesy pop music, or cuddling her dogs in her hammock. How Speed Dating Works in Leeds When you arrive at the Leeds venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. You have all day to tick as many people as you like from the night before. We guarantee you will find someone you will want to see again, otherwise we will give you your next Speed Dating event for free! We are so excited that C.K. McDonnell will be back in Leeds this year and will be feeling festive as we celebrate the release of the fifth instalment in the Stranger Times series, Ring the Bells. C.K. will be joining us on the 10th of October at 7pm and will be in conversation with a soon-to-be-announced author. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas . . . For most people, that means a time of celebration, relaxation and inebriation, but not for the staff of The Stranger Times. While a book club meeting ending in a triple murder isn’t unprecedented, it is at least noteworthy. It quickly emerges that this is no ordinary book-club-triple-murder either, as it features a librarian possessed by a chaotic entity who has broken through from another dimension and is hellbent on vengeance. He’s made a list, but he’s not checking it twice as the whole of humanity is on it. Who would want to summon such a thing? And how is anyone going to be able to send it back? As if that wasn’t enough to be dealing with, a shocking revelation about a member of The Stranger Times team’s past brings family together, but not in a way that’s ever going to make it into a Hallmark movie. Featuring demonically possessed Santas, blood-thirsty books and the ghost of a legendary nightclub, it’s beginning to look a lot like a Christmas apocalypse... Do you want to spend a day as a Martian politician? Want to test your political cunning in a live environment with other players? Want to see a totally new story unfold in front of you? After the success of the first megagame run by Leeds Nerds, we will be running this game again with improved rules and more experienced control. In this game you play as the politicians in Neo-Leeds, the UK's colony on Mars. You will be voting on what happens to the city while trying to get what you want. There will be negotiation, diplomacy and potentially some backstabbing so if you know politics, it will all be very familiar. The game will take place on the 11th of October from 12:00 to 19:00 in the The Adelphi. Please be aware that the venue does not have any wheelchair accessibility. Further details, such as specific mechanics, roles and a schedule for the day, will be sent after tickets have closed. We will also need people to help run the event as control. If you are a GM or similar, then this is in the same vein. It's amazing fun to watch the chaotic story of the player's actions unfold and then prodding it in just the right way. We will need some control for the event to run at all so please consider it. If you have any questions, there is an FAQ below.
