Shinoda Toko: Abstract Calligraphy | Asian Art Museum
Feb 6–Sep 15, 2025 (UTC+8)
Kuala Lumpur
A trailblazer in 20th-century Japanese calligraphy, Shinoda Toko (1913–2021) reshaped the art of ink abstraction with her distinctive and dynamic style.
Shinoda studied traditional calligraphy but soon rejected the practice of copying past masters, likening it to “creating a fake.” A calligrapher at heart, Shinoda preferred lithography over woodblock printing, as it allowed her to directly apply her brushwork to the plate, capturing the nuances of each stroke.
As she transitioned from painting legible Chinese characters toward avant-garde abstraction, Shinoda initially faced resistance in Japan and moved to New York in 1956. “I wanted to see how my works would be received in a foreign country,” she later recalled, “where letters are not read as letters.” Throughout her 107-year lifetime, the artist consistently sought her own vision of beauty, free from the confines of tradition.

When assessing a Physique / Bermuda Model, a Judge should follow a routine procedure, which will allow a comprehensive assessment of the physique as a whole. During the anatomical stands the Judge should first look at the primary muscle group being displayed, the Judge should then survey the whole physique, starting from the head, and looking at every part of the physique in a downward sequence beginning with general impressions and looking for muscular bulk balance development, muscular density and definition. The downward survey should take in the head, neck, shoulders, chest, all of the arms muscles, front of the trunk for pectorals, pec-delt tie-in, abdominals, waist thighs, legs, calves and feet. The same procedure for back stands will also take in the upper and lower trapezius, teres, infraspinatus and erector spinae. The lower body including the legs should be balance and proportioned with the upper body. A detailed assessment of the various muscle groups should be made during the comparisons, at which time it helps the judge to compare muscle shape, density, and definition while still bearing in mind the competitor’s overall balanced development. Physique / Bermuda Model athletes will also be judged on their masculine style, marketability and stage presence. The athletes will need to demonstrate their ability to display their own personality, style and self-confidence.
