Garden ecology workshop with Benny Hawksbee and James McGill | Hilldrop House & Gardens

Jun 29, 2025 (UTC+1)
None
Cultural Experiences
James McGill, one of the top entomologist in the country, has been instrumental in driving the work we do at Hilldrop. His incredible understanding of invertebrates and how that informs the design and care of landscape is at the core of the discussion around structure and micro climates driving biodiversity. He is also a serious dude. You’ll love him. Benny will work with James to talk through how we, as gardeners, can ID and most importantly record and share the wildlife while we work. They will bring to life the small things in our gardens. You’ll be amazed what is there when you know how and where to look. And once you understand the fauna in the garden, you can understand the changes you can make to boost the diversity of species. This is also an excellent opportunity to see Benny running around with his net. A vital workshop for anyone who gardens. Fiona's famous vegetarian lunch will be served at 1pm. Hill Cottage In-Person Retreat 2025 To register email colette@colettepower.com I've been delivering retreats at Hill Cottage since 2018. It's a warm and friendly centre. You can wander in the gardens, walk up along Offa's Dyke or take a refreshing dip in the natural swimming pool. There are just 12 places on this retreat which allows everyone to have their own room. The size of the retreat offers a sense of intimacy and holding and a chance to get to know people. If you come alone you'll be sure of a warm welcome. What to expect We will explore insight and compassion-based practices through meditation, enquiry and Qigong. There will be opportunities to meet in small enquiry groups. Outside of these times, the retreat will remain largely in silence. This spacious week-long format includes opportunities to connect with the natural environment, walk and relax in the beautiful Welsh countryside and swim in the retreat centre's natural swimming pool. There will be time to rest held by the supportive field of collective practice. Who is the retreat for? This retreat is appropriate for people who have had some experience of mindfulness or meditation practice and also for more experienced practitioners. Please get in touch if you are unsure whether this retreat is right for you. This 5-day teacher-led retreat meets the annual retreat CPD requirement (please see feedback for this retreat below) The Venue Hill Cottage Retreat Centre is situated in the Marches of mid-Wales, near Knighton, just into Wales, in Powys. Hill Cottage Retreat Centre Information If you have any questions about the retreat centre, please do not hesitate to contact the centre - please visit: www.colettepower.com Feedback 2024 Wow! Seeds of joy was a wonderful five-day silent retreat. Hill Cottage is such a special place. I'm going home filled to the brim with peace and love, knowing that the route to joy is a calm and peaceful mind. Now to keep planting those seeds. Feedback 2023 What a first face-to-face retreat to be part of! Amazing. I loved it, especially the mindful movement, meditation practices, insights, shared experiences and beautiful environment. Expertly guided meditations and facilitated enquiry The retreat helped to ‘recharge my batteries’, to be kind and supportive towards myself and in my relationships with others. Post retreat I feel more able to accept the changes that come along in life and feel hopeful of enjoying joyful experiences - whether I am on my own or in the company of others. Thank you Colette, I cannot recommend your retreats highly enough. Feedback 2022 I would highly recommend a retreat lead by Colette. I have joined two week long retreats with you so far. They are always in lovely surroundings, with an inclusive mix of other people and always lead so compassionately by Colette. Colette is a kind, caring down to earth and extremely knowledgeable teacher, who made me feel welcome from the off. Her ability to hold a safe space and flow with the changing energy and needs of the group was amazing to witness and was very supportive in creating an environment where I felt free to be myself and experiment with what it means to rest in presence. Hill Cottage retreat is a beautiful place and the love and care that Zarine and Jeremy extend can be seen, felt and tasted through the beautiful spaces, wonderful landscaping and food they share. You set the ‘mindfulness and compassion’ scene wonderfully for the group and I really felt I was in the ‘right place at the right time’. It was lovely to be able to pause and share some time and experiences with a group of people who are also interested in deepening their own mindfulness practice - both on the ‘meditation cushion’ and in ‘everyday life’. This was challenging at times but with the supportive presence of yourself and other group members I felt able to be courageous enough to dig deep and explore some difficult emotions which are present within me at times. I also appreciated the lighter moments which made me smile - you seemed to sense when the time was right to encourage us to take our ‘foot off the pedal’ and lighten the mood a little. We travelled a long way - it was well worth it. I would definitely attend again. Information Source: Dr. Colette Power | eventbrite

The Trek: Enjoy the breathtaking views and fresh mountain air as we make our way up Snowdon. This challenge is suitable for all fitness levels, with a steady pace and a mix of well-maintained paths and some more challenging terrain. Once we reach the peak (1,085 meters/3,560 feet), you'll be rewarded with incredible panoramic views a perfect moment to reflect on the journey and the cause. We’ll be using the Llanberis Path Route for our ascent. (Postcode for Sat Nav: LL55 4TD) Trek Essentials: Registration Fee : £50 (includes transport from NishkamSWAT HQ, Hayes UB4 0JT) Fundraising Target : Minimum £200 each Date : 26th July 2025 The Cause: We are raising funds for the Amrik Singh Rai Liver Screening Campaign , which aims to provide FibroScan screenings to those at risk of liver disease. This campaign was started in memory of Amrik Singh Rai , who tragically passed away from liver cancer in June 2024. His story highlights the importance of early detection, as liver disease often remains undiagnosed until it’s too late. Liver disease is often called a "silent killer" because many don’t experience symptoms until damage is already severe. FibroScan is a simple, non-invasive scan that can detect liver damage before symptoms appear, allowing for early intervention and better health outcomes. How We’re Making a Difference: Liver Screening Clinics : Bringing FibroScan screenings to underserved communities, helping people understand their liver health and take early action. Community Education : Raising awareness about liver disease and its risk factors, including obesity, diabetes, and alcohol use. FibroScan is a quick, painless procedure where a small probe measures liver stiffness and fat content. The results are available immediately, and if liver damage is detected, early action can be life-saving. How You Can Help: By joining our trek and fundraising, you’re helping us provide FibroScan screenings to people who can’t afford them. Your support is critical in preventing liver disease from becoming life-threatening for many. Event Day Details: Departure : We’ll leave from NishkamSWAT HQ in Hayes (UB4 0JT) at 04:00 AM and aim to return by 10:00 PM the same day. Travel Arrangements : Please be mindful that public transport may not be available if we return late, so make necessary arrangements for your journey home. What to Expect: Distance : Approximately 9 miles, ascending to 3,199ft Climb : The route includes a mix of steady inclines and rougher terrain. You’ll be walking for around 5-7 hours. Toilets : There are toilets at the visitir centre. Health and Safety : We’ll have experienced guides with you at all times to ensure your safety and comfort. Preparation: To ensure you’re ready for the trek, we recommend doing some long-distance walks in the lead-up to the event. While the trek is manageable, a good level of fitness will help you enjoy the challenge! Key Recommendations: Equipment : Carry a map and compass , wear suitable hiking boots with thick soles and high sides, and bring waterproof layers to prepare for any weather conditions. Weather and Conditions : Always check the latest weather forecasts before your trip, as mountain weather can change rapidly. Skills and Knowledge : Ensure your fitness level matches the hike’s demands and familiarize yourself with the route and navigation techniques. Additionally, the Visit Wales website offers valuable safety advice for exploring national parks, emphasising the importance of preparation and awareness. You can find more details here: Visit Wales - Snowdon Safety Advice Additional Information: Unsure About Your Ability to Do the Trek? If you’re uncertain about your fitness level or whether the trek is suitable for you, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor before registering. Your health and safety are our top priority! However, please bring a backpack to carry any additional essentials, including your lunch for the day. We recommend sandwiches, cold pasta, or other easy-to-carry foods. With the re-emergence of Wild Boar in recent years, its impact is increasingly felt in some parts of England, yet the animals themselves remain largely elusive and much still remains to be learnt about them. This one-day workshop will start by examining the boar’s history, behaviour, ecology, impacts, public perception and management. Our expert trainer will lead an afternoon walk in the Forest of Dean to show you field signs linked with this elusive mammal. Finally the day will finish with an evening walk using thermal scopes on the search for wild boar and other nocturnal mammals. The day will be structured as follow: 10am: Welcome and Introduction 10.30am-1pm: Classroom session. 1-2pm: Lunch break (lunch is not provided). 2-5.30pm: Tracks and signs walk - we'll head out into the forest and identify signs of this elusive mammal. 5.30-6pm: Short break and travel to new location. 6-9.30pm: Evening walk, with thermal scopes, on the lookout for wildboar and other mammals. Please be aware, cars will need to be moved to a different car park between 5.30 and 6pm as you will explore a new location on the evening walk. Trainer: Alastair Hughes-Roden Alastair graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2018 with a Masters in Wildlife Conservation. His interest in mammals stemmed from his childhood days in the Forest of Dean, where he used to follow the tracks of deer and boar through the woods. Since then he has undertaken many surveys of large terrestrial mammals throughout the UK and parts of Europe. Having successfully led many large mammal tracking walks for the RSPB, university groups and numerous mammal societies, Alastair is now focusing and running a group (called Tracker Al), which aims to help graduates and nature lovers gain more practical experience with field signs and tracks, of UK mammals. He is also one of the three members who runs a group called The Boaring Truth, which aims to educate, and provide information regarding wild boar in the Forest of Dean. Accessibility: We are committed to ensuring the accessibility of our training courses. If you require accommodations or have any accessibility concerns, please contact Fiona (training@themammalsociety.org) in advance, and we will be happy to assist you. Please note the indoor part of this course will take place in a classroom which is up a flight of stairs - there is no lift. For booking terms and conditions click here . *Please note - If not enough delegates book on to this course it may be postponed with two weeks notice, this is because we are a small charity and need to make sure our events are viable.
