Author and Dylan Thomas expert, Jeff Towns, will be talking about his new book, The Wilder Shores of Dylan Thomas , with Elaine Canning, author of The Sandstone City . JEFF TOWNS Jeff Towns is one of the world’s leading Dylan Thomas experts, an antiquarian bookseller based in Swansea, specialising in books about Dylan Thomas and all aspects of Welsh culture. He opened Dylans Bookstore in 1970, firstly in the High Street, and after a few moves settling in Salubrious Passage. He has pursued Dylan Thomas’s life, friends and works around the globe, actively collecting books, papers, photographs, ephemera and art relating to Dylan Thomas. These collections know sit in museums and institutions from Kyoto in Japan, to Texas, via San Francisco and all the way from Abertawe to Aberystwyth & the National Library of Wales. He has sold Dylan Thomas to Politicians, Presidents, Poets, Rock Stars and musicians. Jeff has acquired a substantial body of knowledge about the poet over the years, arranging exhibitions, among them the 'Word & Image' exhibition at the Dylan Thomas Centre, which has been in place for 30 years and contributing to various TV documentaries and feature films. Stuart Goldsmith is an internationally award-winning comedian, podcaster and speaker. His TV credits include performing stand up on BBC’s Live At The Apollo (due to TX in 2025) and Conan , hosted by comedy icon Conan O’Brien. Ute Wassermann & Joke Lanz (Berlin) Joke Lanz (turntable) and Ute Wassermann (voice + objects) have been performing as a duo at international festivals since 2016. Their performance takes the audience on a rollercoaster of vocal, physical and electronic actions. Turntablist Joke Lanz is known in particular for his internationally acclaimed project “Sudden Infant” and appreciated for his work in the area between performance/body art and improvisation/noise. Michael has an illustrious pop history, having been a founder member of The Field Mice, possibly the most beloved band on Sarah Records in the 1990s. And with The Gentle Spring, it seems that history is repeating itself… When Michael and his friend Bobby Wratten formed The Field Mice, the two of them very quickly created a set of songs whose emotional honesty, raw guitars and perfect pop melodies pierced the hearts of a generation of indiepop fans, kids who were unmoved by the posturing of mainstream indie, and who didn’t want to spend time in fields dancing at 24-hour raves. The Field Mice were the band who defined the meaning and the spirit of Sarah Records. Defiantly in love with pop, defiantly un-macho, defiantly… sensitiveAnd now, remarkably, Michael has done it again. With his new musical partner Emilie, The Gentle Spring have created a fresh new iteration of indiepop music. Once again, the songs are unafraid of raw emotions, brutally honest and is still in love with big pop melodies. They are still…. sensitive. But life is seen through a different lens now. There is wisdom, there is experience, and there is the ability to look back at the world with a mixture of regret and joy. These are very adult songs, and the arrangements reflect this. Rich acoustic guitars and Emilie’s haunting keyboard have replaced hectic drum machines and urgent distortion. And there is a third element to this music. Jérémie Orsel’s sophisticated guitar adds textures and melodies that give these songs a real depth, while maintaining an enigmatic distance, never quite overwhelming the vocal line. So things are clearer now. But feelings are just as strong. The pain of unrequited love that made Field Mice songs so poignant hasn’t gone away. In some ways, the thought of roads not taken is more profound when experienced in retrospect. I Can’t Have You As A Friend entertains this notion, still moved by the allure of a different life, but shuddering with fear at what might have happened. Also still haunted by the past, The Girl Who Ran Away conjures up the ghost of a previous failed relationship, which threatens to undermine happiness in the present. In Severed Hearts, sung by Emilie, there is the stark recognition that some endings really are final: sometimes there can be no reconciliations. But the song cleverly moves on from this: it acknowledges that, even after the worst emotional loss, you have to pick yourself, you will move on. It’s sophisticated and it’s mature – but it will still break your heart. Sugartown is another song that plays this trick on you. It insists that there will always be lightness and shade. It warns you against complacency, but does it so kindly that you feel like you’ve been embraced. When Michael’s and Emilie’s vocals combine in the final chorus, telling us that we don’t live in Sugartown, you know they are right – and yet the sweetness of the singing makes you feel that – just for a moment – you do. Looking Back At The World has the strongest echoes of The Field Mice. It is a celebration of the past, which includes all those classic 90s pop songs, But it’s also a call to arms: whatever we choose to do next is much more important than memories of long-gone happiness. The Gentle Spring are the future now. The band perform as a trio and have already found a keen audience in France, where they are based. During a short tour of the UK in January, to coincide with this release, British audiences will get their first opportunities to see The Gentle Spring play these new songs live. Boatbar To Hamburg Boatbar to Hamburg emerged from the vibrant Swansea Uplands music scene, led by singer and songwriter Anthony Bunkham. The lineup has evolved to include violin, guitars, bass, drums and keyboard, enhancing Anthony’s poetic, warm and witty compositions to create a world of pure emotion. Boatbar to Hamburg are musical storytellers, sharing tales of life and love, and the human experience. Their gorgeously crafted songs will take you on a journey both to familiar and unfamiliar places, and they will resonate deep within you and capture your hearts and ears. The Sweetest Ache The Sweetest Ache recorded three singles and a mini-album for Sarah Records. After Sarah ended, a second album, Grass Roots, was released on Vinyl Japan. We are delighted to be able to welcome them back to the live scene with a special acoustic set and hope this is the catalyst for more shows in future. Swansea Bach Choir are looking forward to welcoming you to our community event, Come and Sing Mozart's Requiem. We will spend the day exploring this beloved work together before giving a short, informal concert at the end of the day. The event will take place in Swansea Minster (formally known as St Mary's Church), a beautiful church with a strong tradition of making beautiful music. All are welcome, although participants will get the most out of the day if they have a good understanding of musical notation and are comfortable with choral singing.
