On International Day of Disabled People (Tuesday 3 December), we hope that this event will be a good opportunity to highlight disability sport and demonstrate the personal and career benefits participation in sport can have for disabled people and people with long term health conditions. We will have multiple speakers who’ll be talking about their own lived experiences and how sport has helped them through all facets of life. We will hear from two key note speakers: Sophie Unwin, UoN Alumni and GB Paralympic Cycling double gold medallist at the recent Paris Paralympics. Sophie started playing Goalball whilst a student at UoN and still coaches Goalball today. Aymun Khan, UoN Alumni who played a pivotal role in the development of the Wheelchair Basketball Club and off the back of this work, winner of BUCS Student Volunteer of the Year in 2019 We will also have spotlight presentations from: Alex Grey, a current UoN student who participates in sport and fitness at the University to help manage his autism; Rhiannon Craig, Wheelchair Fencing Secretary and current student who has played a significant role in developing a Wheelchair Fencing offer within the Fencing Club. Careers and Employability Service team at UoN who will talk about the findings from the Career in Sport Survey and the support they have available for disabled students There will be an opportunity to ask questions and chat to the speakers.
