Code of Life Middle School Biotech Camp, June 9-13, 2025 (AM) | HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology

This Code of Life Camp focuses on DNA. Young scientists begin the week by extracting DNA from a variety of organisms and end the week with a little genetic engineering. Campers learn how the information coded in DNA controls physical traits and investigate how changes in DNA may cause the symptoms of some genetic disorders. Students tour the HudsonAlpha facilities and meet with HA staff. Code of Life Campers also investigate the many roles of enzymes in living systems. Throughout the camp, students use the equipment found in most science research labs and gain hands-on experience in micropipetting and centrifuging. The culminating experiment has campers creating glow-in-the-dark bacteria.
Students who complete Code of Life Camp are then eligible to participate in our two advanced biotechnology camps: I Want to Work in a Lab Coat and/or The Secret Lab.
Registration will close on May 9th, or once we reach capacity.
Eligibility and Tuition:
Eligible to rising 6th-8th graders
$200 tuition is due in full upon registration. Tuition also includes a daily snack and a t-shirt.
Refund policy:
Full refund (minus any processing fees)- up to thirty (30) days prior to the program start date
Half refund - up to fourteen (14) days prior to the program start date
No refund – less than fourteen (14) days prior to the program start date

Genetic Engineering – Level 1
16 hour course (4 days, 4 hours per class)
What is genetic engineering and how is this technique used? In this offering, students will perform a series of steps to create a new DNA molecule carrying genes of interest. Once inside a bacterial cell, these genes will produce a fluorescent protein that students will purify and take home as a souvenir! This activity will help students understand what genes do and how they can be manipulated by genetic engineering, exposing them to common processes in research labs.
Date: June 30 – July 3, 2025
Time: 1 - 5 p.m. every day
Eligibility and Tuition:
Students must be enrolled in 10th-12th grade when they register (during the 2024-2025 school year).
$225 tuition is due in full upon registration.

Includes dorm-style housing (if needed, please select that ticket type during registration). Housing will be at the
University of Alabama Huntsville
in suite-style dorms, with individual rooms, and shared bathroom, kitchen and living space.
Educators who complete the training will receive classroom kits, materials and resources, valued at over $900.
Provided with 40 hours of PowerSchool PD credit, or requested certificate, upon conclusion of the program.
Tuition cost also includes a catered Welcome Breakfast.

*Alabama public high school teachers have subsidized tuition (including classroom materials and optional housing) and meal costs provided by the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Legislature.
