Kainos (Greek for “new”) is dedicated to performing compelling works from the world of contemporary classical music, championing both established names and emerging voices. Whether you're a long-time enthusiast or simply curious about exploring new musical territory, we invite you to join us in celebrating the power and beauty of contemporary music in the heart of Newcastle.
This first programme includes North East composer John Caskin’s “Winter Reels”, “Boogie Woogie” by newly appointed Master of the King’s Music Errollyn Wallen and “Glitch” by Newcastle born Anna Appelby.

Mark Edwards (Conductor)
Originally from Edinburgh, Mark trained as a percussionist before taking up conducting, and has recently completed his Masters in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Clark Rundell and Mark Heron, where he was awarded the Brierley Kershaw Prize for Conducting. In 2017, Mark won the National Brass Band Conducting Competition and more recently was a semi-finalist in the Citta’ Di Brescia-Giancarlo Facchinetti Conducting Competition.
Comfortable working on large scale projects for both orchestra and choir, he has recently directed larger repertoire including: Elgar – The Dream of Gerontius, Vaughan Williams – A Sea Symphony, and Verdi Requiem. As assistant conductor, he has taken rehearsals for RTE concert orchestra and acted as cover conductor for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Mark has also worked on projects with BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Psappha ensemble, assisting conductors such as Sir Mark Elder, Vasily Petrenko, Vassily Sinaisky, John Storgårds and Simone Young.

The day starts off with a loop hike taking in the twin peaks of Meelmore and Meelbeg.

WILD GOURMET NI
After your energising hike, you can relax and enjoy an immersive woodland experience around a warm campfire. You will be lead to the location in a sheltered forest grove where you will be treated to an experience like no other.
You can sit back and soak up the atmosphere while Paul from Wild Gourmet NI serves you a steaming bowl of warming stew and fresh homemade baked bread.
Now for the yummy stuff ..
We start with a choice of tender beef, carrot and radish stew or a bean and lentil veggie casserole both served with freshly baked foccacia and herb bread.
Then fill the corners with homemade chocolate, hazelnut and pistachio brownies served with a hot dark chocolate sauce and vanilla cream washed down with a nice warm cuppa.
All our food is made from locally sourced quality ingredients and will be served in recyclable serving dishes.

Our campfires are always contained within a fire pit and protected with a fire blanket to ensure the ground is not damaged.
Can I go on my own?
Of course, there are lots of people that join our events on their own, it won’t be long until you are making new mountain mates!

Suitable footwear- this includes walking boots or waterproof hiking/mountain running trail shoes
Walking trousers or leggings (no jeans/cotton)
Insulating layers such as fleece or wool and a jacket
What you will need to bring with you:

Are you ready for an adventure? You will get a guided hike with qualified and experienced mountain leaders who are outdoor first aid trained and will be carrying first aid and emergency equipment for your safety, and a dining experience with a trained and qualified chef.

IF WE CANCEL OR POSTPONE an event for any reason, you will have the option of:
1. Completing your activity on a rescheduled date
2. Receive a full refund.
