If you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. From the acclaimed author of Like a Mother comes a reflection on the state of caregiving in America and an exploration of mothering as a means of social change. “Angela Garbes has given us the definitive explanation for something we all share: the sense that something is not right about our society’s treatment of parenting. Essential Labor is a beautifully written, painstakingly researched, and courageously personal book. Garbes reveals the way systems exploit caregiving and shows us how the essential work of mothering can fix not just family life, but society. A timely and unforgettable book.”—Heather McGhee, New York Times bestselling author of The Sum of Us Mothering is arguably the most essential work humans do. In response to the increasing weight placed on mothers and caregivers—and the lack of a social safety net to support them—Angela Garbes found herself pondering a vital question: how, under our current circumstances that leave us lonely, exhausted, and financially strained, might we demand more from American family life? In Essential Labor , Garbes explores assumptions about care, work, and deservedness, offering a deeply personal and rigorously reported look at what mothering is, and can be. A first-generation Filipina American, Garbes shares the perspective of her family’s complicated relationship to care work, placing mothering in a global context—the invisible economic engine that has been historically demanded of women of color. Garbes contends that while the labor of raising children is devalued in America, the act of mothering offers the radical potential to create a more equitable society and as opportunities to find meaning, to nurture a deeper sense of self, pleasure, and belonging. Angela Garbes is the author of Like a Mother and Essential Labor, a New Yorker and NPR Best Book of the Year. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and featured on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and NPR’s Fresh Air. She lives with her family in Seattle. Jia Tolentino is a staff writer at the New Yorker and the author of the essay collection Trick Mirror . Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite

Healing-Centered Leadership with Julian Brave NoiseCat | The Center for Fiction

Jun 4, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Cultural Experiences
Dean's Lectures Series - Heal the World Auburn's dean's lectures are rooted in a long tradition of hosting religious, faith, cultural, and intellectual leaders going back several decades. The conversations are meant to inspire and connect leaders to issues of healing and repair. From healing in the aftermath of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda to healing in the aftermath of Indian Boarding Schools in the US and Canada, Auburn has sought peacemakers and storytellers who are focused on healing and reconciliation that are closest to these issues. Auburn is proud to have Julian Brave NoiseCat to talk with leaders about his approach to healing. Most recently, his work Sugarcane, directed alongside Emily Kassie, follows the abuse and missing children at the Indian residential school NoiseCat's family were sent to in British Columbia. NoiseCat's first book, We Survived the Night (Penguin Random House Canada), will be out October 2025. The event will also feature We look foward to welcoming you to Auburn's Dean's lectures. About Julian Brave NoiseCat Julian Brave NoiseCat is a writer, Oscar-nominated filmmaker, champion powwow dancer and student of Salish art and history. His first documentary, Sugarcane , directed alongside Emily Kassie, follows an investigation into abuse and missing children at the Indian residential school NoiseCat’s family was sent to near Williams Lake, British Columbia. (But it’s really a reverse Western buddy stoner roadtrip tragicomedy.) Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary Competition. The film was recognized with dozens of awards including Best Documentary from the National Board of Review and was nominated for an Academy Award. Sugarcane screened at film festivals around the world and in theaters across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The film is distributed by National Geographic and can be streamed on Hulu and in over 150 markets on Disney+. NoiseCat’s first book, We Survived the Night , will be published by Alfred A. Knopf on October 21, 2025 as well as by Penguin Random House Canada, Profile Books in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, Albin Michel in France and Aufbau Verlag in Germany. NoiseCat’s journalism has appeared in dozens of publications including The New York Times , The Washington Post and The New Yorker and has been recognized with many awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize, which honors "excellence in long-form, narrative or deep reporting on stories about underrepresented and/or misrepresented groups in the present American landscape." In 2021, NoiseCat was named to the TIME100 Next list of emerging leaders alongside the starting point guard of his fantasy basketball team, Luka Doncic. Before turning full-time to writing and filmmaking, NoiseCat was a political strategist, policy analyst and cultural organizer. In 2019, he helped lead a grassroots effort to bring an Indigenous canoe journey to San Francisco Bay to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Alcatraz Occupation . Eighteen canoes representing communities from as far north as Canada and as far west as Hawaii participated in the journey, which was covered by dozens of local and national media outlets, including The New York Times . In 2020, he was the first to publicly suggest that Deb Haaland should be appointed Interior Secretary. Working with leaders from Indian Country as well as the progressive and environmental movements, NoiseCat helped turn the idea into a sophisticated inside-outside campaign that drew support from celebrities, activists and even a few conservative politicians. When Haaland was sworn in she became the first Native American cabinet secretary in United States history. Raised in a single-mother household in Oakland, California, Julian is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq'escen and a descendant of the Lil'Wat Nation of Mount Currie. He has played hockey for three of the oldest teams in the game: Columbia University, the Oxford University Blues and the Alkali Lake Braves. A champion traditional dancer, his powwow prize winnings include a horse. About Auburn Auburn is a ten-generation theological seminary that indentifies and equips leaders - from the pulpit to the public square - to build community, bridge divides, pursue justice, and heal the world. JPI presents Phase 3: Driving Change by Elevating Voices | St. Francis College

Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Cultural Experiences
A full-day conference focused on transforming the criminal justice and other traumatic systems. WE ARE DRIVING CHANGE BY ELEVATING VOICES! We have moved from lived experiences to lived expertise at the NYC Justice Peer Initiative! This conference will be jam-packed full of collective policy-making, building capacity, learning, healing, professional development, and advocacy—for us by us! Workshops will focus on building the justice peer movement and strengthening the crimino-legal and behavioral health systems peer workforce community. We will promote our voices as the "subject-matter experts" in the room. We will solidify the seats at the table that belong to us! Come hear our event sponsor, Helen 'Skip' Skipper, the Executive Director of the NYC Justice Peer Initiative, talk about being "Unapologetically Peer and a Lived Expertise Expert". Come participate in our general session featuring the screening of documentaries produced by Echoes of Incarceration - an organization that trains directly-impacted youth in the digital media production trades. Come acknowledge and support the heroes in this field as we bestow our 2nd Annual "Guardian of Justice" awards! Learn how we can, as a community, craft policy & advocacy; hear how we can build our table; create seats for our change agents; and become hope dealers! Come hear how we can use our lived experiences to push further, faster, and better as we progress forward from lived expertise to DRIVING CHANGE BY ELEVATING VOICES! New this year is our DTG customized tees/hats fundraiser - we build our merch for us, by us! There is an opportunity to purchase merch and the registration, including a discount! Unfortunately, we now charge a nominal fee for this day of awesomeness because of funding cuts ( WE ARE ALL IMPACTED!) - a mere $50. But never a charge for our directly impacted community and certified peers. Please ensure you register under your correct designation - three types of tickets are available: general admission, directly impacted/peers, and presenters/tablers. Sponsorship and tabling packages for this important, one-of-a-kind event are still available!! Don't miss out on this opportunity! Reach out to Skip: NYCJPIExeDir@cases.org—event agenda to follow! A suspenseful, wildly engaging debut novel by the award-winning author of Rainbow Rainbow , following a musician spiraling in self-doubt and self-searching after a night—and a relationship—gone wrong. Songs of No Provenance tells the story of Joan Vole, an indie folk singer forever teetering on the edge of fame, who flees New York after committing a shocking sexual act onstage that she fears will doom her career. Joan seeks refuge at a writing camp for teenagers in rural Virginia, where she's forced to question her own toxic relationship to artmaking—and her complicated history with a friend and mentee—while finding new hope in her students and a deepening intimacy with a nonbinary artist and fellow camp staff member. A propulsive character study of a flawed and fascinating artist, Songs of No Provenance explores issues of trans nonbinary identity, queer baiting and appropriation, kink, fame hunger, secrecy and survival, and the question of whether a work of art can exist separately from its artist. Lydi Conklin is the author of Rainbow Rainbow, which was longlisted for The Story Prize & the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection. They have received a Stegner Fellowship, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award, three Pushcart Prizes, a Creative Writing Fulbright in Poland, a grant from the Elizabeth George Foundation, scholarships from Bread Loaf, and fellowships from Emory, MacDowell, Yaddo, Hedgebrook, Djerassi, and elsewhere. Their fiction has appeared in Tin House , American Short Fiction , and The Paris Review . They’ve drawn comics for The New Yorker , The Believer , Lenny Letter , and elsewhere. They are currently the Zell Visiting Professor of Fiction at the University of Michigan. Jenny Xie is the author of Holding Pattern , a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree. Her short fiction has appeared in AGNI , Ninth Letter , and Joyland , among other publications, and she was previously the Executive Editor of Dwell Magazine . Jenny earned her MFA at Johns Hopkins University, and is the grateful recipient of fellowships from Bread Loaf, MacDowell, Yaddo, and other organizations. Born in Shanghai and hailing from California, she’s currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite
