We will promote our voices as the "subject-matter experts" in the room. We will solidify the seats at the table that belong to us! Come hear our event sponsor, Helen 'Skip' Skipper, the Executive Director of the NYC Justice Peer Initiative, talk about being "Unapologetically Peer and a Lived Expertise Expert". Come participate in our general session featuring the screening of documentaries produced by Echoes of Incarceration - an organization that trains directly-impacted youth in the digital media production trades. Come acknowledge and support the heroes in this field as we bestow our 2nd Annual "Guardian of Justice" awards! Learn how we can, as a community, craft policy & advocacy; hear how we can build our table; create seats for our change agents; and become hope dealers! If you have any questions regarding these guidelines or to request accessibility accommodations, please contact eventhelp@booksaremagic.net. From Melissa Febos, the national bestselling author of Girlhood, comes an examination of the solitude, freedoms, and feminist heroes she discovered during a year of celibacy and a wise and transformative look at relationships and self-knowledge. In the wake of a catastrophic two-year relationship, Melissa Febos decided to take a break: For three months she would abstain from dating, relationships, and sex. Her friends were amused. Did she really think three months was a long time? But to Febos, it was. Ever since her teens, she had been in one relationship after another. As she puts it, she could trace a “daisy chain of romances” from her adolescence to her midthirties. Finally, she would carve out time to focus on herself and examine the patterns that had produced her midlife disaster. Over those first few months, she gleaned insights into her past and awoke to the joys of being single. She decided to extend her celibacy, not knowing it would become the most fulfilling and sensual year of her life. No longer defined by her romantic pursuits, she learned to relish the delights of solitude, the thrill of living on her own terms, the distinct pleasures unmediated by lovers, and the freedom to pursue her ideals without distraction or guilt. Bringing her own experiences into conversation with those of women throughout history—from eleventh-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, Virginia Woolf, and Octavia Butler to the Shakers and Sappho—Febos situates her story within a newfound lineage of role models who unapologetically pursued their ambitions and ideals. By abstaining from all forms of romantic entanglement, Febos began to see her life and her self-worth in a radical, new way. Her year of divestment transformed her relationships with friends and peers, her spirituality, her creative practice, and, most of all, her relationship to herself. Blending intimate personal narrative and incisive cultural criticism, The Dry Season tells a story that’s as much about celibacy as its inverse: pleasure, desire, fulfillment. Infused with fearless honesty and keen intellect, it’s the memoir of a woman learning to live at the center of her own story, and a much-needed catalyst for a new conversation around sex and love. Melissa Febos is the national bestselling author of four books, including Girlhood —which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative . She has been awarded prizes and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, LAMBDA Literary, the National Endowment for the Arts, the British Library, the Black Mountain Institute, the Bogliasco Foundation, and others. Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Essays, Vogue, The Sewanee Review, New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. Febos is a full professor at the University of Iowa and lives in Iowa City with her wife, the poet Donika Kelly. Leslie Jamison is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Splinters , The Recovering , and The Empathy Exams ; as well as the essay collection Make It Scream , Make It Burn , a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award, and the novel The Gin Closet , a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize . She writes regularly for The New Yorker and her work has appeared in many publications including The New York Times, the Virginia Quarterly Review , and the New York Review of Books . She teaches at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn. Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite

We'll raise a glass to four incredible changemakers pushing the boundaries of inclusive design through bold innovation. Through their design practices, thought leadership, and advocacy, our Bond Street Bash 2025 Honorees are creating more vibrant public spaces in New York City and beyond: Hana Kassem, Principal, KPF Mark Gardner, Principal, Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects Luke Hayman, Partner, Pentagram Yvonne Stennett, Executive Director, Community League of the Heights This year's Bash will be especially memorable, as we also welcome our new Executive Director Hayley Eber. As founder of award-winning practice Studio Eber and Acting Dean of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union, Hayley brings a wealth of leadership experience and commitment to our values of community-building and just urban futures. Please join us at the Bash to celebrate our honorees and welcome Hayley! TICKETS AND SPONSORSHIP As with everything we do, accessibility is our goal, so tickets to this year's Bash are pay-what-you-can with a suggested $75 donation. Guests are welcome to give at whatever level feels most comfortable and donations above $75 help us ensure that all members of Van Alen’s community can enjoy this fun-filled evening. To register for the the Bond Street Bash, select the number of tickets you'd like and make your desired donation in the "pay what you want" box in the registration window. Event sponsorships start at $1,000 and can be selected during checkout. These donations go directly towards supporting Van Alen’s ongoing inclusive design collaborations and come with event sponsorship benefits as detailed below. Bond Street Bash Sponsorship donations may also be made in installments. To learn more about event tickets and sponsorship options or if you have any questions, please reach out to Pratik Dubey at pdubey@vanalen.org. LIMITED EDITION MERCH For the first time ever, we're selling limited edition Van Alen apparel and accessories for pickup at the Bond Street Bash. This year’s collection features some of the most whimsical and wildly creative imagery from Van Alen's archive. For the 1989 William Van Alen Memorial Fellowship, Michael Sorkin wrote a poetic prompt inviting designers to imagine a celestial space where world leaders gather to work towards conflict resolution. Nearly four decades later, the question of how design can work in service of peace remains as vital as ever. Merch will be available for pick up at the Bond Street Bash - if you're unable to pick up your oder in person, please contact pdubey@vanalen.org to coordinate alternate deliver or pick-up options. Only available while supplies last — don’t miss out! HONOREES NEXUS AWARD Honoring dedication to bridging disciplines and advancing collaboration Hana Kassem, Principal, KPF Since joining Van Alen's Board nine years ago, Hana has cultivated an ecosystem of innovative design collaborators — enabling us to connect communities to the best possible design support. With an international perspective, her leadership has helped Van Alen shift the paradigm of how residents, community leaders, and design professionals relate to one another. TORCHBEARER AWARD Honoring collaborative practices rooted in equity and justice Mark Gardner, Principal, Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects Over nine years of service on Van Alen’s Board, Mark has steered us toward our mission of creating more equitable cities through inclusive design. Through his practice and his mentorship at Brooklyn's Youth Design Center, Mark is deeply committed to democratizing access to design education and tools. KEYSTONE AWARD Honoring steadfast support for community-centered initiatives Luke Hayman, Partner, Pentagram A trusted collaborator for five years — beginning with pandemic response program Neighborhoods Now — Luke has consistently met our community partners where they are. His thoughtful approach gives form to their visions, building trust between residents and design professionals in the process. COMMUNITY CATALYST AWARD Honoring transformative changemaking through design and advocacy Yvonne Stennett, Executive Director, Community League of the Heights Over five years of collaboration, we've witnessed how Yvonne's kindness, spirit, and dedication have expanded Washington Heights' access to crucial resources. Building on our Neighborhoods Now collaboration, she's shaped a brighter future for her community through a longterm vision for its public realm.
