Monday 29th September | 6pm Little Woman: The Art of Being Jane Wigley, Newcastle’s First Photographer A talk with Kelvin Wilson Jane Wigley, one of Britain´s first female photographers, and the first to open (in 1845) a portrait studio in boomtown Newcastle, is today, as she was then, disregarded as a footnote. The pictures she took appeared lost, her life´s story without bookends. New research however illuminates the unique shaping behind Jane Wigley´s character– for the soldier´s daughter had spent much of her childhood in the company of a robot, an invisible girl, and an apparition with bright pink eyes, before coming out into the world herself as a nightingale. Indeed, Jane Wigley enjoyed a full, even brazen life before devoting her energy to the world´s newest wonder, photography. In his presentation, the speaker will present to the Newcastle audience several portraits now believed to have been taken by Wigley in the town, 180 years ago. Kelvin Wilson is an archaeological illustrator working for museums and publishers. Research into early photographers led him, amongst others, to catalog the life and work of John Sherrington, a calotypist who like himself once emigrated from northern England to the Netherlands. During the winter months, even the most hardy and adventurous off-road riders can sometimes need a little extra encouragement to get out and pedal! Whether that be the promise of tasty snacks in a warm shop at the end of a muddy spin round the local trails, or swapping adventure tales with the rider next to you to take your mind off your numb fingers...we've got you covered with our Sonder Winter Gravel Series! Each ride will start from one of Alpkit’s flagship stores located in some of the best cycling locations in the UK. Route 1 will start from Alpkit Metrocentre and will be a self-supported ride leaving the store at 10AM, lasting roughly 3-5 hours depending on your speed. A GPX file of the route will be sent out to all participants who have confirmed their booking through Eventbrite, on the Thursday before the event. The route can be completed fast or at your own pace, we encourage those of all abilities to take part and have lots of fun! Just remember, this is a social ride with gravel enthusiasts and you are fully self-supported. Please come equipped with everything you would bring on a solo ride (including a helmet) and be aware that the very nature of being self-supported means you are your own mechanic for this ride, so although we all hope it won't happen... be prepared to fix a puncture by the side of the trail or handle anything else that may occur en route! Also bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at this time of year, so please dress accordingly to the forecast to ensure you stay warm and comfortable for the duration of the event. (We also recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for travelling home as you may get wet and muddy!) Back at Alpkit there will be cakes and weather-specific refreshments (the soup always goes down a treat!) and plenty of time to chat bikes, routes and all things adventure with staff and fellow riders. Level 1 training is the starting point for learning Makaton. It is recommended for: Parents, family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work enviroment. participants who need a more detailed knowledge about using and applying Makaton to develop the communication skills of others Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary. Duration Level 1 training is made up of two modules delivered as 2 sessions session on 12th & 19th Oct , 10-1pm. Particpants must be able to attend both dates.
