Are you looking for hands on practical experience, an opportunity to get outdoors, a chance to earn your Duke of Edinburgh award or a way to meet new friends? If so, Young Wardens if the group for you!
Activities vary throughout the year but include; learning to use tools to safely carry out practical tasks that contribute to the management of the reserve; carrying out surveys of key wildlife species, providing information that helps to inform conservation activities on the reserve.
All Young Wardens need to be dropped off by an adult who can confirm their emergency contact details at the start of the session. Please do not send young wardens to the session alone as they will not be able to participate.

Discover Foxburrow Reserve on a guided walk from our knowledgeable wildlife guide Margaret. Both will take you through the mosaic that is Foxburrow Reserve. Each month is a different focus allowing you to learn new things and experience the seasonal change.
10-12 every 4th Sunday of the month
Come along whether you are a wildlife enthusiast or are looking to improve your ID skills, everyone of all ages is welcome. We shall be exploring predominantly our red route which is a grass path and can be muddy in places. This trail is also exposed in some areas and can be quite hot during the summer months or windy/wet at other times so please dress for the outdoors.
Binoculars are recommended - we sometimes have some to borrow.

Learn the difference between them then head out for a walk around the reserve to see if we can spot each species, go on a bug hunt to find their food, and make seed bombs to create habitat for their food.

Our sessions primarily follow the Forest School ethos of child led learning, we are usually in the woods playing and exploring and encouraging a deep connection with the woodland environment. Activities can include hammocks, whittling, invertebrate hunting, woodland crafts, swings, bridge building, tool use and fire lighting.
Please note that we will not be providing lunch for this session. Every child needs a packed lunch
that is suitable to stay in their rucksack. Please send your young person with a water bottle for the day, refills will be available.
All our sessions will be held entirely outside, so please ensure your child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the weather (hat scarf, suncream, waterproofs as appropriate to the season) and be aware that can be a tad cooler in the woods than elsewhere. They will also need closed toed shoes and you may prefer to send them in long trousers as there are stinging nettles and midges in the woods. Please do not allow your young person to bring a mobile phone.
During high winds, our sessions may well be based in and around the yard if we feel it is unsafe to be in the woods. if we feel conditions are too unsafe to run at all, we will contact you.
All young people must be dropped off by an adult, who must confirm their emergency contact details with the member of staff at the arrival point, before departing along with confirming who will be collecting said child.

Our sessions primarily follow the Forest School ethos of child led learning, A usual session finds us in the woods putting up ropes, hammocks, using tools and encouraging a deep connection with the woodland environment. We frequently have a fire (except in very dry weather) and cook a snack on it, this can be anything from smores to popcorn, damper dread, seasonal jam, drop scones, brownies and hot chocolate (although not all in one go!).
All our sessions will be held entirely outside, so please ensure your child(ren) come with a packed lunch and drink and are dressed appropriately for the weather (hat scarf, suncream, waterproofs as appropriate to the season) and be aware that is can be a tad cooler in the woods than elsewhere.
Please note, closed toed shoes and long trousers must be worn as there are stinging nettles and midges in the woods and they will not be permitted to light fires or use tools without covered legs and toes.
All sessions are for unaccompanied children.

This 16 hour, course is ideal for all those who are working with anyone from babies to adult in the outdoors. The course is run by people who have been working and playing in the outdoors as both formal and informal educators for the last 30 years, with both children and adults and are experienced trainers.
The Awarding Organisation,
ITC First
, has designed and developed this Forest Schools First Aid course to ensure that the content and context is totally integrated with the Forest School ethos and rationale.
This qualification is a must for all Level 3 Practitioners and those supporting Level 3 Practitioners. This course is also suitable for those leading Outdoor learning sessions in school grounds, country parks, nature reserves and other outdoor learning environments.
The course takes place at a nature reserve with plenty of opportunities to practice first aid scenarios in the outdoors. Assessment is continuous and certification is dependent on successful continuous assessment, there is no final examination. Those who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are awarded a certificate that is valid for three years. The certificate entitles the candidate to be a First Aider for 3 years from date of issue.
This course also covers the content of the Level 3 Paediatric First Aid 12 hour course and candidates will also receive a certificate for this on successful completion.
The 16 hour course consists of 2 units:
Unit 1: Forest School Emergency Action
Unit 2: Forest School Incident Management
On completion of the full 16 hours of training, successful candidates should be able to:
Understand the role and responsibilities of the forest school first aider.
Be able to assess an emergency situation safely.
Be able to provide first aid for a child or adult who is unresponsive and breathing normally.
Be able to monitor the vital signs of an unresponsive casualty.
Be able to provide first aid for a child or adult who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
Be able to provide first aid for a child or adult who has a foreign body airway obstruction.
Be able to provide first aid to a child or adult with external bleeding.
Understand how to provide first aid to a child or adult who is suffering from shock.
Understand how to provide first aid to a child or adult with Anaphylaxis.
Be able to administer first aid to a child or adult with injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
Be able to provide first aid to a child or adult with head and spinal injuries.
Understand how to administer first aid to a child or adult with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose.
Understand how to administer emergency first aid to a child or adult with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness.
Understand how to administer first aid to a child or adult who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold.
Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds.
Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned.
Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung.
Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with minor injuries.
Understand how gain and use casualty history to help with administering first aid.
Understand how to complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies. Be able to provide the above first aid in an outdoor context taking account of, and protecting casualties from, environmental conditions

Wild foods at Forest School certificated course:
Learn to identify seasonal wild foods and Identify poisonous lookalikes
Learn different fire lighting techniques using natural tinders and how these could safely be used with students. Explore and cook simple and tasty campfire recipes using foraged foods and simple cupboard staples.
This training day runs from 10am-3pm in an outdoor setting.
This course is Quality Endorsed by AIM. Participants will receive a digital certificate following the course.
What will I need for the course?
Please make sure you bring the following with you:
A packed lunch. we will be cooking snacks on the fire.
A travel mug.
Suitable outdoor clothing for the weather conditions (trousers, not shorts)
Stout shoes or boots. Please do not wear sandals.
A camera or camera phone can be useful for recording some of the activities
