Join us for a special opportunity to meet Scottish sculptor Michael Visocchi and tour Part One of the Whale Memorial. Based in Angus, Michael creates work that explores nature, landscape, and humanity’s impact on both. His latest commission, Commensalis, is a powerful tribute to South Georgia – a remote island once devastated by industrial whaling and now a rare environmental success story. Commissioned by the South Georgia Heritage Trust and the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, this memorial honours the island’s extraordinary ecological recovery and the whales that are once again thriving there. Come hear more about the story behind the work, its unique Antarctic setting, and the process of bringing this ambitious international project to life. Scottish sculptor Michael Visocchi lives and works in an old schoolhouse in Angus. Using a variety of materials, including wood, metal, thread and card, to make works that often address nature, landscape and the human trace on it. Born in 1977, he grew up in his parents’ shops and cafes. After a brief time apprenticed to a cabinet-maker, he began training as an architect, but found he preferred more hands-on making. Come join us for a special event featuring joint choirs from twin towns Dundee in Scotland and Alexandria in Virginia, USA The New Dundee Choir That Doesn't Have a Name Yet (yes this is their permanent official name!),formed in 2023 under the direction of Gerard Johnson. They focus on original arrangements of pop, rock and folk songs with piano accompaniment, celebrating the joy of collective singing while maintaining high performance standards. This year's concert, A River Runs By , reflects Dundee's enduring connection with the River Tay. Gerard Johnson has worked in the music industry for forty years as a studio engineer, producer, arranger and performer. His career includes collaborations with artists such as Björk, Enya and Yes, and a twenty-five year association with Saint Etienne as producer and musical director. His experience also spans theatreand church music,including composition work in both fields. The talented Alexandria Choral Society choir which is accompanied by piano and organ, blends elements of folk, classical, sacred, and romantic music. Audiences can expect a rich tapestry of harmonies that celebrate cultural heritage and spiritual themes, creating an atmosphere that is both uplifting and reflective. The repertoire will likely include traditional folk and harmonious classical songs, along with poignant sacred pieces and romantic melodies that resonate with deep emotional connection. Artistic Director, Kathryn Harsha, holds a Master of Music in Conducting from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from Bluffton University. While studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, she served as Assistant Conductor of the Chorale des Étudiants Etrangères and studied conducting at the Messiaen Conservatoire in Saint-Maurice, France.
