From the James Beard Award-nominated author of Tacky, a boldly funny, warts-and-all tour of the bad habits that make Rax King who she is. "Most writers are boring people. King, though, seems different: Bettie Page meets Carrie Bradshaw."— Washington Post With Rax King's trademark blend of irreverent humor and heartfelt honesty comes a new collection of personal essays unpacking bad behavior. Sloppy explores sobriety, begrudging self-improvement, and the habits we cling to with clenched fists. In “Proud Alcoholic Stock,” King examines her parents’ unwavering dedication to 12 step programs and the texture her family history has lent to her own sobriety. “Shoplifting from Brandy Melville” is a lighthearted look at, what else?, shoplifting from Brandy Melville—one of her few remaining indulgences now that she doesn’t drink. King writes about her overspending and temper control issues as well as her poorly managed mental health. These seventeen essays capture the personal and generational vices that make us who we are. From being a crummy waitress to using uppers to force friendships, from obsessing over the Neopets forums to lying for no discernable reason, these essays approach bad habits with emotional intelligence, kindness and—most importantly—humor. Rax King is the James Beard award-nominated author of Tacky and co-host of the podcast “Low Culture Boil.” Her writing can be found in Glamour, Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, and elsewhere. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and toothless Pekingese. Jamie Hood is the author, most recently, of Trauma Plot: A Life , the hybrid pandemic diary how to be a good girl , and regards, marcel , a monthly newsletter on Proust and other miscellany. She lives in Brooklyn. Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite

Date: Tuesday, July 29th Venue: The Old American Can Factory Address: 232 3rd Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 8:00 PM: Doors Open 9:00 PM: Film Begins 10:40 PM: Panel Discussion with filmmaker Jessica Earnshaw and special guests 11:00 PM: Afterparty THE FILM Baby Doe Jessica Earnshaw | 2025 | US | 100 mins Thirty years ago, Gail Ritchey, a young woman from a conservative Christian community in rural Ohio, gave birth alone and left her newborn in the woods. Now a devoted mother of three, her quiet suburban life is shattered when DNA evidence links her to the infamous cold case of “Geauga’s Child,” leading to her arrest for murder. Authorities dismiss her claim that the baby was stillborn, and the media swiftly vilify her. Facing a possible life sentence, Gail turns to her husband, Mark, and their adult children, who struggle to reconcile the woman they love with the accusations against her. With her attorney, Steven, she must confront the weight of societal and religious pressures—and her own long-buried shame—to fight for her freedom. Directed by Jessica Earnshaw ( Jacinta ), Baby Doe cuts through the headlines to uncover the human complexity of Gail’s case. With a compassionate yet unflinching lens, the film examines the intersection of women’s health, justice, and the societal forces that continue to shape stories like hers. ......................................... What do we owe the people we love? Join us for Open Loops, a modern-day salon for big questions and intimate conversation. This isn’t a panel or a performance. It’s a space for reflection, storytelling, and shared inquiry. We’ll gather in a thoughtfully curated setting to explore the emotional, philosophical, and relational dimensions of love, care, and obligation. What to Expect: Doors open at 7:00 PM. Come early to settle in, grab a drink or pastry, and explore some light journaling prompts. At 7:30 PM , we’ll open with a short introduction to the night’s question, a few guiding ideas from relational philosophy, and gentle conversation guidelines. From there, we enter the salon: guided dialogue, shared reflection, and space to connect or simply listen. You don’t need a background in philosophy to attend. All you need is a willingness to be present. The Venue We’re hosting this gathering at Le Petit Monstre , a vegan bakery and wine bar in Clinton Hill. The setting is cozy, elegant, and made for slow evenings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the event. Whether you come with a friend or on your own, you’ll be welcomed into a room of curious, kind, and thoughtful people. This is an invitation to think out loud, to connect, and to be with others in a way that feels just a little more human. Information Source: Aubrey Aust | eventbrite

Luster meets The Idiot in this riveting debut novel about a volatile friendship between two outsiders who escape their bleak childhoods and enter the glamorous early '90s art world in New York City, where only one of them can make it. Ruth, an only child of recent immigrants to New England, lives in an emotionally cold home and attends the local Catholic girl’s school on a scholarship. Maria, a beautiful orphan whose Panamanian mother dies by suicide and is taken care of by an ill, unloving aunt, is one of the only other students attending the school on a scholarship. Ruth is drawn forcefully into Maria’s orbit, and they fall into an easy, yet intense, friendship. Her devotion to her charming and bright new friend opens up her previously sheltered world. While Maria, charismatic and aware of her ability to influence others, eases into her full self, embracing her sexuality and her desire to be an artist, Ruth is mostly content to follow her around: to college and then into the early-nineties art world of New York City. There, ambition and competition threaten to rupture their friendship, while strong and unspoken forces pull them together over the years. Whereas Maria finds early success in New York City as an artist, Ruth stumbles along the fringes of the art world, pulled toward a quieter life of work and marriage. As their lives converge and diverge, they meet in one final and fateful confrontation. Ruth and Maria's decades-long friendship interrogates the nature of intimacy, desire, class and time. What does it mean to be an artist and to be true to oneself? What does it mean to give up on an obsession? Marking the arrival of a sensational new literary talent, Lonely Crowds challenges us to reckon honestly with our own ambitions and the lives we hope to lead. Stephanie Wambugu was born in Mombasa, Kenya in 1998 and grew up in Rhode Island. She lives and works in New York, where she received her MFA from Columbia University. She is an editor of Joyland Magazine. Lonely Crowds is her first novel. Megan Nolan is an Irish writer based in New York. Her debut novel, Acts of Desperation , was an international bestseller, the recipient of a Betty Trask Award, and nominated for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Her second, O rdinary Human Failings , was nominated for the George Orwell prize for Political Fiction, the Nero Prize, and the Women's Prize, among others. She is the 2025 Sewanee School of Letters John Grammer Fellow. Information Source: Books Are Magic | eventbrite

From the acclaimed author of horror sensation Boys Weekend , a vibrant new graphic novel about a timid academic sent out from the walled dystopian security territory of New York City to investigate a cult in the wilds of the Catskill Mountains. In 1977, a group called The Spiritual Association of Peers decamps to the woods of the Catskills, taking over an abandoned summer camp. They name their new home Simplicity. In 2081, scholar Lucius Pasternak, a fastidiously organized trans man, tries to keep his head down living in the New York City Administrative and Security Territory, which was founded after the formal dissolution of the United States in 2041. Then, he's offered a job by the mayor, billionaire real estate developer Dennis Van Wervel, to complete an anthropological survey of the people of Simplicity for a history museum he's financing. A wary Lucius is nevertheless drawn in by the people of the small wooded community, intrigued by its strange rituals and in particular by the charming acolyte Amity Crown-Shy. Born and raised on the compound, Amity is comfortable in their own skin, a striking contrast to Lucius' repressed reserve. But Lucius' control starts to slip when he begins to suffer visions both terrifying and sensual—visits from beautiful but nightmarish creatures. Then, just as Lucius discovers that Van Wervel's project is more sinister than it seemed, members of the community begin to disappear, leaving behind grisly signs of struggle. The denizens of Simplicity believe that a being they call “The Lamentation” is responsible for the attacks. Amity and Lucius set out to hunt for the creature in the dangerous Exurb Zones, a wild wood full of libertarian doomsday preppers, wealthy isolationists, and worse. There, they'll finally discover the true threat to their way of life—and what they're willing to do to stop it. Mattie Lubchansky is a cartoonist and illustrator and the Associate Editor of Ignatz award-winning magazine and website The Nib ( thenib.com ). She is also an Ignatz winner, a Herblock Prize finalist, and the author of Boys Weekend and The Antifa Super-Soldier Cookbook . She lives in beautiful Queens, NY, with her wife. The Woods by San Fermin & BalletCollective (Night #1) | Pioneer Works

The Woods by San Fermin & BalletCollective (Night #1) | Pioneer Works

Jul 31, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Concerts
PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE TICKETS FOR THURSDAY, JULY 31 Pioneer Works is excited to present The Woods , an immersive concert experience created by composer Ellis Ludwig-Leone of the Brooklyn-based band San Fermin and choreographer and director Troy Schumacher of BalletCollective . With two performances scheduled over back-to-back evenings in the Main Hall, The Woods celebrates the alchemical power of music and dance to transform fear and loss into life-affirming moments of community. The Woods is Ludwig-Leone and Schumacher’s newest and perhaps most ambitious collaboration yet: exploding the rich musical universe of San Fermin’s catalogue across an enveloping set designed by Jason Ardizzone-West ( Redwood , The Weeknd, Dua Lipa). The set is visually inspired by an original sculpture by Ardizzone-West: a fractured frame with a snow white surface, belying something blood red and alive beneath. Featuring a cast of 17 dancers and singers moving freely across multiple stages and amongst the audience, the set becomes a living, breathing entity, while the band, situated throughout the space, puts the audience inside the music-making. Costumes by CFDA Award-winning fashion designer Elena Velez conjure a mythic dreamscape where fantasy and reality blur over the course of the 75 minute show. In this production, the woods become a gathering place for searching souls awaiting a chance for change. Held together by this fragile connection, everyone who enters sees their own desires and fears written across the enchanted space, and as the sun sets, they are drawn deeper into a magical and sometimes perilous world. The music of San Fermin, lauded for its “knack for simultaneously expressing beauty and crisis,” lends itself to this expansive setting and theatrical treatment. What is the role of storytelling—and songwriting—in a constantly shifting, often terrifying reality? The Woods celebrates the alchemical power of music and dance to transform fear and loss into life-affirming and communal experiences: in a world that is always in motion, we must resolve to love. In this spirit, The Woods is meant to be undertaken in a crowd. Drawing on elements of a live rock concert, theater, and contemporary dance, The Woods promises to be a singular and unforgettable event.
