Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique where a piece is heated to a glowing orange (roughly a cone 06) and then removed from the kiln while still glowing and submerged in a bed of combustible material such as sawdust where it burns all the available air and undergoes a reduction step. This is what gives some raku its metallic appearance. Raku has a higher failure rate than normal firings due the thermal shock. This adds to the excitement, every surviving piece is a success. Firing Process: 1. The pieces are loaded in the kiln and fired for about an hour to a red glow. 2. The lid is removed and each piece is placed in its own container full of combustibles and covered with a lid. 3. A wet towel is placed over the lid to keep the smoke down. 4. After a couple minutes the pieces have cooled enough to be removed from the sawdust and cooled in a bucket of water. 5. Pieces are then cleaned of ash and soot to reveal the glaze underneath. For LESPACEMAKER members, a selection of glazes have been made available for purchase by the Ceramics Committee. Unfortunately your pieces will not be suitable to eat out of due to the smoke residue and cracks formed by thermal shock. Pieces must already have been bisque fired at 06. Each person will be able to fire up to ⅓ of a kiln shelf which is 15.5" in diameter. That's about 3 teacups or one cereal bowl. The max height is 12". To fire more volume, more tickets can be purchased. You may also bring organics to add to the reduction part of the firing such as feathers or horse hair. What is a raku firing? Raku is a traditional Japanese firing technique where a piece is heated to a glowing orange (roughly a cone 06) and then removed from the kiln while still glowing and submerged in a bed of combustible material such as sawdust where it burns all the available air and undergoes a reduction step. This is what gives some raku its metallic appearance. Raku has a higher failure rate than normal firings due the thermal shock. This adds to the excitement, every surviving piece is a success. Firing Process: 1. The pieces are loaded in the kiln and fired for about an hour to a red glow. 2. The lid is removed and each piece is placed in its own container full of combustibles and covered with a lid. 3. A wet towel is placed over the lid to keep the smoke down. 4. After a couple minutes the pieces have cooled enough to be removed from the sawdust and cooled in a bucket of water. 5. Pieces are then cleaned of ash and soot to reveal the glaze underneath. Feel free to bring your own organic material such as feathers or horse hair.
