[RMN CONVOCATION] Uncharted: Becoming the Church We Need Right Now | First United Methodist Church

Jul 24, 2025 (UTC-5)
Madison
Cultural Experiences
Church – we've set off from the shores of the last General Conference hopeful for progress and inclusion. But between then and now, we've also been buffeted by polycrisis: heightened cruelty, exclusion, and a shaky future of justice for LGBTQ+ people of all intersecting identities. In the swirling chaos: who do we say God is? And who do we say we are? The Spirit is calling us into Uncharted waters. This July, come to beautiful Madison, WI, to refresh your soul, enlarge your capacity, and find your travelers on this justice journey. Just in time, RMN is poised to create a different, stronger movement in this era of our Church and our world. Shaking Up the Schedule This is a special Convocation combining the best of our past gatherings and new ideas. In past Convocations, workshops were woven through the length of our gatherings. This time, workshops are happening first. Throughout Convocation, you'll gather with Constellations – other Reconciling people who share a question, identity, passion, or growing edge with you. Constellations will gather between Plenaries, which will be rich opportunities for learning and inspiration. Your Constellation will form a close learning community that will hopefully outlast our time together in Madison. Thursday, July 24 - Friday July 25: Workshops and Pre-Convocation Gatherings Affinity Group Meetings and Workshops RMN Extension Ministries and other justice-seeking groups that want to take advantage of being in Madison together can book time and space to gather. Send us a message if that's you. Church Leadership Inclusion Training In addition to meetings of affinity groups, RMN is hosting a training on inclusion for annual conference leaders who want to embrace the UMC's potential as a beacon of God's justice. Registration for this training will be separate and will be sent to annual conferences within the next few weeks. AC leaders who attend will receive a discount code for Convocation registration if they choose to stay for the whole weekend. Workshops RMN Extension Ministries and others will present workshops on Thursday and Friday. Details on workshops will be published on the Uncharted website. Friday, July 25 - Sunday, July 27: Uncharted! Doors Open Uncharted officially kicks off at 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon with our first plenary gathering. Details, including bios of speakers, will be added soon! Homecoming On the evening of Friday, July 25th, come by First UMC for a fun and informal reunion. If this is your first Convocation, then it's a wonderful opportunity to meet one another and make new friends. Plenaries and Constellations Throughout Uncharted, you'll gather with Constellations with others who share a question, identity, passion, or growing edge with you. Plenaries will provide us the opportunity to hear from dynamic leaders of the Reconciling movement, theologians, artists, pastors, activists, organizers, and more. Plenaries will be paired with Constellations, where you'll problem-solve and glean insights in a focused, more intimate group setting. Worship , Bible Study, Preaching As always, Convocation will feature musical worship, Bible study, and preaching that can warm and challenge our souls. Prom: Starry Night Break out those heels or those oxfords (or those hiking boots, that's fine!) because we're heading to prom on Saturday night! Our theme is "Starry Night." Prom will be accompanied by a banquet dinner (prom entrance and dinner are included in registration). The event will also be a fundraiser for Reconciling Ministries Network. Your generosity will help ensure that we can continue to chart a more just and loving future for the Church and the world. Sunday Worship On Sunday morning, come back to First UMC to worship and praise God with the people of our hosting church. Sending-Out At the close of Convocation, we'll put together our learnings and deepened relationships for the sake of building the kin-dom of God in our own communities. Plant based dyes: intro | Allen Centennial Garden

Jul 26, 2025 (UTC-5)
Madison
Cultural Experiences
Come and dye with us! Come learn the joy and experimental process of working with natural plant based dyes by working together with other workshop participants to transform different dye plants into your own unique colors. We’ll have at least four different colors and an array of examples pre-made to serve as our guide. Learn how to harvest in our dye garden for all the necessary materials. Interested in growing these plants? They’re easy to grow or forage, we’ll show you! As we experience the process, we will discuss the importance and impact of plant based dyes throughout history, consider the differences and complexities of dyeing animal based fabric versus plant based fabric, and learn about the chemical process involved in making your plant based dye permanent. This is a great introductory course because it works with different techniques for dye extraction and fabric preparation. Everyone will get to take home 6 fat quarters of cotton (22” x 18”). These may be used for future projects like quilting or hemmed into a napkin. You will have the knowledge to be able to grow your own dyeing materials! This 120-minute project was designed for those aged 18 and up. General Information: We recommend navigating to the Observatory Drive and Babcock Drive corner. Plan to head north on Babcock Drive. The entrance to the garden is on Babcock Drive. You are welcome to drop off in the circle but we are not allowed to park there. Google maps will sometimes confuse the garden’s address (620 Babcock Dr, Madison, WI 53706) and navigate to Leopold Residence Hall. Street parking is free on the weekend. Consider near the Garden on Babcock Drive (lot 34), near Porter Boathouse on Babcock Drive (lot 35), and near Babcock Dairy (lot 40). There is paid parking in the Observatory Drive Ramp next to Steenbock Library (lot 36). Lot 36 costs $4 for the first two hours. More information about parking on campus can be found here: https://transportation.wisc.edu/visitor-parking/ Workshops are held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, we will move inside the DC Smith Greenhouses and do things there. Should this need arise before the start of our program, then participants will be notified via email two hours prior to the event. If the weather looks unfavorable please check your email before heading out. All the needed plant materials will be brought to DC Smith Greenhouses (465 Babcock Dr, Madison, WI 53706). Traditional music is not static; it shifts with the times, uncovering new meanings in old words, new ways of talking about the communal pathways that led us to where we are today. For master musicians Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, traditional banjo and fiddle music is a way to interpret our uncertain times, to draw artistic inspiration and power from the sources of meaning in their lives. History, family, literature, live performance, and environmental instability all manifest in the sounds, feelings, and sensations that permeate their music. Their 2022 sophomore album, Hurricane Clarice is a direct infusion of centuries of matrilineal folk wisdom, a fiery breath of apocalyptic energy. Individually they are both leaders in the young generation of roots musicians, de Groot being known for intricate clawhammer banjo work with Bruce Molsky, and Hargreaves bringing powerhouse fiddling to the stage with Laurie Lewis and David Rawlings in addition to teaching bluegrass fiddle at UNC-Chapel Hill. Their first self-titled album released in 2019 garnered attention from CBC Q, Paste Magazine and Rolling Stone Country, earning the duo the Independent Music Awards “Best Bluegrass Album” and a nomination from IBMA for “Best Liner Notes of the Year.” The duo has been booked at festivals and venues such as Newport Folk Festival, Savannah Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC, and Red Wing Roots Music Festival. Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves create a sound that is adventurous, masterful, and original, as they expand on the eccentricities of old songs, while never losing sight of what makes them endure.
