Out of the Crate | Manchester Art Gallery
Nov 7, 2019–Dec 31, 2026 (UTC)
Manchester
Come and look behind the scenes of Manchester’s publicly owned sculpture collection. Part exhibition, part research space, Out of the Crate delves into the un-tapped history of the collection. This is an opportunity to investigate sculpture through access to stored collections and archival material. Find out what’s in store and how we look after it, help unlock hidden stories about works we know very little about and explore how artworks might encourage conversation.
We have about 400 sculptures from antiquity to the present day and, until recently, less than 5% were on display. As well as modern and contemporary works, there are 19th-century sculptures and works from earlier periods that have rarely been seen this century and are under-researched.
On display are a large range of materials including marble, bronze, wood, glass, ceramic and paper, a variety of sizes and shapes and different techniques of making. From bronze medals decorated with reliefs to large-scale free-standing 3D works, you can now see around 30% of the sculpture collection here. In terms of representation, we should also consider who has and hasn’t been included in the collection.

Jo Hamilton: The Post Office Scandal and My Extraordinary Fight for Justice | Manchester Central Library
Jul 1, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
Blink Publishing and Manchester Libraries present an evening with Jo Hamilton at Central Library.
'My first big discrepancy came in the shape of a £2,000 shortfall that just made no sense at all. Of all the things that kept me awake once in the thick of the nightmare that unfolded, it was being stuck in that truly incomprehensible moment where the mere touch of a button suddenly turned £2,000 into £4,000 within three minutes on that cold December night in 2003.'
Jo Hamilton was one of more than 700 sub-postmasters prosecuted between 2000 and 2014 based on information from the Post Office's faulty Horizon accounting system. She was told to put right a wrong she hadn't committed and pushed to the very brink of her existence - remortgaging her house, borrowing from anyone she could in order to repay money that she hadn't taken, and questioning her own sanity.
Immortalised in ITV smash hit drama,
Mr Bates v The Post Office
, this is Jo Hamilton's extraordinary first-hand account of how she built a Post Office that was at the very heart of her community and lost it all through no fault of her own. For the first time, beyond the headlines and the corridors of the High Court and the UK's political institutions, we will finally hear Jo's full story and the human side of this scandal as well as the untold struggle she faced during the biggest miscarriages of justice in modern history. Ultimately, this is a story of hope and the strength of community and the ability of a few to fight back against the odds.

An Evening With Cory Doctorow | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
We can't wait to welcome Cory Doctorow to Blackwell's to discuss his latest novel PICKS AND SHOVELS and his wider work as an author and activist.
Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm
Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book.
About the book:
Enshittification was a choice.
The decay of the once-great internet into five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of the other four, was a choice. Policy choices that sidelined privacy and labor protection and ignored monopolisaiton created the enshitternet.
In PICKS AND SHOVELS, Cory Doctorow visits the moment those first choices were being made, in a historical technothriller that takes us back to the heroic era of the PC revolution and the moment where it all started to go wrong.
Picks and Shovels stars Martin Hench, Doctorow's hard-charging, two-fisted high-tech forensic accountant. It's a standalone novel in a series that includes the bestselling novels Red Team Blues and The Bezzle, In this volume, we learn the origin story of Silicon Valley's first - and best - finance-crime fighting spreadsheet sleuth, born in fraud and fire.
About the author:
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently PICKS AND SHOVELS and THE BEZZLE (followups to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. He famously coined the term "enshittification" to describe the reduction in the quality of services provided (see: Google) as a consequence of profit-seeking.
Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of a book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331.
Our event format is usually a 45 minute talk or discussion followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new.

PRIVATE RITES: Julia Armfield in conversation with Jess White | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 3, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
We're are thrilled to welcome Julia Armfield back to Blackwell's for the paperback publication of Private Rites, an uneasy, water-logged tale of family, queer love and faith at the end of the world. Julia will be in conversation with Jess White.
Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm
Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book.
About the book:
It's been raining for a long time now, for so long that the lands have reshaped themselves. Old places have been lost. Arcane rituals and religions have crept back into practice.
Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their estranged father dies. A famous architect revered for making the new world navigable, he had long cut himself off from public life. They find themselves uncertain of how to grieve his passing when everything around them seems to be ending anyway.
As the sisters come together to clear the grand glass house that is the pinnacle of his legacy, they begin to sense that the magnetic influence of their father lives on through it. Something sinister seems to be unfolding, something related to their mother's long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always been unusually interested in their lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperilled world.
About the author:
Julia Armfield is a fiction writer, living in London with her wife and cat.
Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review and Best British Short Stories 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award 2018, and won the White Review Short Story Prize 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of salt slow, a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize 2020.
Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea, was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award 2022 and won the Polari Prize 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024.

An evening with Ben Aaronovitch at Waterstones Deansgate | Waterstones
Jul 14, 2025 (UTC+1)
Manchester
We are delighted to welcome bestselling author and fantasy fan-favourite
Ben Aaronovitch
to Deansgate in celebration of
Stone and Sky
, the latest installment in his beloved Rivers of London series.
Peter Grant returns in this gripping new novel where a relaxing holiday in Scotland proves to be just the beginning of another rollercoaster of a case.
Ben will chat about his new book and answer audience questions, followed by a signing. Doors at 6pm.
About
Stone and Sky
'This isn't London. The rules are different up here, and so are the allegiances.'
Detective Sergeant Peter Grant takes a much-needed holiday up in Scotland. And he'll need one when this is over...
If more's the merrier, then it's ecstatic as his partner Beverley, their young twins, his mum, dad, his dad's band and their dodgy manager all tag along. Even his boss, DCI Thomas Nightingale, takes in the coastal airs as he trains Peter's cousin Abigail in the arcane arts.
And they'll need them too, because Scotland's Granite City has more than its fair share of history and mystery, myth ... and murder.
When a body is found in a bus stop, fresh from the sea, the case smells fishy from the off. Something may be stirring beyond the bay - but there's something far stranger in the sky...
About the author
Before becoming a bestselling author,
BEN AARONOVITCH
was a screenwriter for
Doctor Who
and a bookseller at Waterstones. He now writes full time, and every book in his Rivers of London series has been a
Sunday Times
Top Ten bestseller. He is published in 14 languages and has sold more than 2 million copies around the world. Aaronovitch is also a trustee on the board of Cityread London and is a long-time supporter of Nigeria's premiere arts and cultural festival, The Aké Festival. He still lives in London, the city he likes to refer to as 'the capital of the world'.

Although many of the courses discuss ways of adapting practice when providing therapies to patients with a cancer diagnosis, we maintain that the aims of our educational events are to increase understanding of cancer and the delivery of suitable complementary therapies for therapeutic purposes in this patient cohort. Therapies are to be offered alongside medical treatment as a means to enhance physical and psychological wellbeing, and never as a treatment for the underlying cancer.
