THIS IS THE LISTING FOR:Breaking Boundaries: The Voices of Outsider Artists Saturday 5th April 2025 2:00 - 4:00 pm Make Hamilton Join Angela Samata and a panel of outsider artists as they offer a unique and eye-opening exploration into the world of self-taught creators who exist outside the mainstream art world. Each artist will share their journey, shedding light on how their background, struggles, and non-traditional paths influenced their work. The audience will gain an insight into the power of self-expression that comes from personal experiences rather than academic training. OTHER EVENTS IN THE BEYOND THE MAINSTREAM TALKS SERIES: Bringing The Outside In Saturday 22nd March 2025 2:00 - 4:00 pm The Williamson Art Gallery Angela Samata CF travelled across Japan, America and Switzerland in search of what defines Outsider Art . In this lecture Angela will share her Churchill Fellowship research, looking at what and who she found in search of answers. Ron’s Place and other visionary environments Saturday 29th March 2025 2:00 - 4:00 pm Make Hamilton International Emmy and Royal Television Society award winner Martin Wallace will discuss Ron’s Place in the context of other visionary environments he has visited across the world, many in connection with the Channel Four series he directed, Journeys Into The Outside with Jarvis Cocker. In particular, Martin will focus on the liminal qualities of Ron’s Place – a threshold between the deeply personal expression of a single person's private obsessions and the universal experience of the home as a refuge for the self. Meet our speakers:What's Outsider Art?Outsider art refers to artwork created by self-taught or non-traditionally trained artists, often outside the mainstream art world. These artists typically work without formal education, art world connections, or regard for conventional artistic trends. The term is often associated with highly original, raw, and deeply personal artistic expressions. About Ron's PlaceRon's Place is a unique and extraordinary example of outsider art located in Oxton, Birkenhead in Wirral. This former flat was the home of self-taught artist Ron Gittins from 1986 until his passing in 2019. During his residency, Ron transformed the interior into a fantastical environment inspired by ancient civilizations, covering almost every surface with murals and sculptures, including expansive murals depicting Greco-Roman and Egyptian characters, underwater scenes, and remarkable three-dimensional fireplace sculptures shaped like a roaring lion and a minotaur's head. ​ Ron's Place was granted Grade II listed status by Historic England, making it the first example of outsider art to receive such recognition in the UK. The property is now owned by the Wirral Arts and Culture Community Land Trust (WACCLT), which aims to preserve and share Ron' legacy with the public. ​ Currently, Ron's Place is closed to the public to allow for essential restoration work.
