Join us at The Book Corner to welcome debut author Rupert Dastur in conversation with local author and poet Misha Honcharenko. About the book: It is autumn 2004 and in a farmhouse on the hills outside Llandudno, a family endures the agonizing wait for their son to return from Iraq. His decision to join up has left them reeling, yet there are other pressing concerns to be met at home: the working of the farmland that has been theirs for generations and what to do with their troubled younger son. Catrin’s childhood sweetheart comes back to their small town, giving the boys’ doting mother a glimpse into the life she could have had. And John, their father, falls once more into his gambling habit, even as the farm sits on the brink of bankruptcy. As each member of the family grasps at their own tenuous lifeline, they drift further from one another – until, on a cold winter evening, there is a fateful knock at the door. Written in luminous, exquisitely calibrated prose, Cloudless is a masterful portrayal of the fragility and resilience of human connection. Rupert Dasturis a writer, editor and publisher. His writing has been shortlisted for the Bath Short Story Award and the Fish Short Story Prize, and won the Federation of Scottish Writers Award in 2018. He is the founder of TSS Publishing and director of The Cambridge Prizes for Short Fiction, and he runs writing workshops across the UK and abroad. He read English at Cambridge University and lives in London.Cloudless is his debut novel. Misha Honcharenko is a queer Ukrainian artist and writer. Among all the NT images for church, family is as prevalent as any. Given the Apostle Paul's fondness of this image, Robert Banks says, “the comparison of the Christian community to the family must be regarded as the most significant metaphorical usage of all." In the words of the 70's girl group, Sister Sledge, "We are Family!" Family is where new life is conceived, nurtured to maturity, and where love binds us together. This spring, Vision Ministries is convening six regional, one day events across Canada to help pastors, planters, elders, ministry leaders and influencers explore some of the implications of 'church as family.' CITY DATES: Edmonton - Sat. Apr. 5th Waterloo - Sat. Apr. 12th Toronto - Sat. Apr. 26th Montreal - Sat. May 3rd Halifax - Sat. May 10th Vancouver - Sat. June 7th The day will include: Learning Labs - sessions designed to learn from and be inspired by ministry practitioners as they unpack initiatives from their own church context focused on birthing new things, nuturing vitality or multiplication. Panel Discussion - a session designed to explore the family metaphor for a regional network of churches. Message - a call to live out 'family life' in the local church and regional network. VMC Updates - cultivating awareness of new initiatives and future developments for our national family. Lunch & Breaks - a chance to deepen relationship with ministry peers and other 'family members' from across the region. The Lord's Supper - gathering around the table, set by the One who brought us into his family, making us spiritual sisters and brothers though his sacrifice. Though the event is open to all, it is gear for people of influence (experienced or emerging) in your congregation. Mark the date on your calendar, register on the Eventbrite site, and encourage others in your context to do the same. Information Source: Vision Ministries Canada | eventbrite
