Now we move forward with a new form of collaboration. With this event, the Meetings of the PB&BC resume after a hiatus. The RGME shares the organizational tasks, manages the registration, and adds an online functionality for a fully hybrid event. This practice reflects RGME practices for its online events since 2021 and developments since 2024 for its In-Person Visits , with a hybrid feature, to Special Collections of various kinds, both private and public. This meeting represents the first in this year's RGME In-Person Visits, for which several are scheduled for later this year. The meeting will take place, as customary in recent years for the PB&BC, at the Princeton Public Library, for which the Conference Room has been reserved. The RGME will bring the online function, through an interactive Zoom Meeting . This step corresponds with the RGME's tradition since 2021 of providing online access for our events. This meeting also represents a development in Princeton for the RGME to hold an In-Person Visit -- with online access for a fully hybrid occasion -- to Special Collections of various kinds, private and public, as we resumed in November 2024. 2) The Speaker and Subject Ronald K. Smeltzer will describe highlights of his years'-long interest in collecting and researching materials relating to Émilie du Châtelet (1706–1749), French mathematician and physicist. Some results of this work have appeared in the lendmark exhibition at the Grolier Club, Extraordinary Women in Science & Medicine: Four Centuries of Achievement, co-curated by Ronald K. Smelzer, Robert J. Rubin, and Paulette Rose (2013). Now, Ronald will speak informally about reflections on this subject, with a view to her life, life's work, collaboration with Voltaire (1694-1788), and early death at the age of 42. Among her many scholarly accomplishments are the Instutitions du Physique (Paris, 1740, with a second edition in 1742, translated also into German and Italian in 1743) and her translation into French of the Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy by Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Ronald's collecting interests and discoveries concern a variety of published and unpublished materials, gathered over many years. Ronald's collecting interests and discoveries concern a variety of published and unpublished materials, gathered over many years. His talk illustrates merits of gathering into one collection an ensemble of materials about a particular subject, including different copies of a given edition, which may, upon inspection and comparison, exhibit significant differences. As he says about the discoveries, "It is important to look." At our meeting, we have the opportunity to hear from the scholar-collector about his experiences n] forming the collection and bringing their discoveries to wider knowledge. It might be possible, in person, to see several examples from the collection. Here we might learn more about them, in person and online, from Ronald himself. Please join us if you can. We look forward to welcoming you. Thanks We thank the Friends of the Princeton University Library and also the Princeton Public Library for help with arranging and hosting this landmark event for the RGME in association with the PB&C. ***** Image : Frontispiece for the First Edition of the Institutions de Physique (Paris, 1740), center, with an image of female figure in classical dress climbing to the Temple of Truth. Member Show Opening Reception 2025 | West Windsor Arts Council

Arts
Fine Art
It has been attributed to Picasso “Everything we create is a self-portrait.” Therefore, we can move towards the notion that when we all tell our stories and document our journeys through the creation of artwork, we reveal some aspect of ourselves. In the space of telling /sharing our stories, we come together as a community. An artist’s journey or story comes through in any image they create. Every day is a new visual story and is an ongoing exploration of who you are and your experiences. For example, landscapes and florals might be rooted in memory, location, or feeling as part of your journey. Whereas non-representational art is a way of communicating your journey with what comes through in color, shapes, and textures. Members were invited to share their visual stories through art created within the past two years. Information Source: West Windsor Arts Council | eventbrite

Let Her Play is encouraging girls to attend Princeton Women's Water Polo vs. Wagner on April 16th at 6:30 pm at DiNunzio Pool (Princeton University). If you sign up to attend (for free!) you will be able to attend the meet & greet with the team following the game and receive some pretty cool swag from Let Her Play + Princeton Athletics! Registration only needed for the school-aged participant(s) (parent / guardian should purchase tickets and enter the participant name(s) under attendee information). Registration will close 24 hours prior to the event. Let Her Play is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization with a mission to prepare girls for life through sports participation. Did you know that there is a 7% wage gap between former athletes and former non-athletes? AND 73% of executives look for sports on a resume? (EY + espnW, 2017) Yet only 1:3 girls between the ages of 6-12 are playing sports in the United States (Aspen Institute, 2020). AND they drop out at a rate that is 1.5x that of boys by the time they hit adolescence (Refinery 29, 2017). Do you want to know why sports has such a significant impact ? Because sports teaches key life skills that are arguably not learned any other way (in addition to providing benefits to overall health and wellbeing). At Let Her Play, we're getting girls enrolled and engaged in sports programs nationwide to better prepare them for life and give them the ability to confidently leave it all on the field. This event is co-sponsored by Princeton University Athletics. Information Source: Let Her Play | eventbrite

Literary Arts
Poets, storytellers, and spoken word fans, join us for a special Porchfest -edition of Story & Verse , the Arts Council of Princeton's monthly open mic. Whether you're a seasoned writer or a first-time performer, Story & Verse offers a warm and welcoming platform to express yourself and engage with a diverse audience of creatives, casual appreciators, and everyone in between. In honor of Porchfest, we're thrilled to take the show outdoors, joining in on the community fun and gathering together an enthusiastic audience for the literary and performing arts on Hinds Plaza. Held in partnership with the Arts Council of Princeton, the Princeton Public Library and the Princeton University Art Museum, this event will welcome featured performer, spoken word poet, activist, and ceramic artist Roberto Lugo. Lugo’s work will be on view in the exhibition Roberto Lugo / Orange and Black from Saturday, February 15 to Sunday, July 6 at Art@Bainbridge . The exhibition features vases that draw on the shapes, techniques, and decorative motifs of ancient Greek vases to tell personal and communal stories of contemporary social and political oppression. To learn more about open mic signup on 4/26, visit artscouncilofprinceton.org/story-and-verse . In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Library's Community Room. A bout our host: Brass Rabbit is an artist, contemporary curator, and arts administrator based in Trenton, New Jersey. Rabbit has been creating and hosting poetry, spoken word, and storytelling events in the tri-state area for over a decade. As a performer, the art of storytelling holds a very special place in her heart, but listening to and supporting others is where she feels most at home. Hosting the Story & Verse Open Mic at the Arts Council of Princeton could be called a dream job, but for Rabbit, the position completely lacks any “work-like” qualities and is more of an outstanding experience she looks forward to each month. Previously, Rabbit has hosted the Levitt Amp Music Series, Voice to Ear Festival, Word on Front Poetry Festival, independent poetry and storytelling open mics, and even curated an art exhibition celebrating the art of poetry. This program is presented as part of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home , a major public humanities initiative taking place across the nation in 2024 and 2025, directed by Library of America and funded with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emerson Collective.
