Talk: Colour Revolution - Victorian Art, Fashion & Design | Millennium Gallery

Talk: Colour Revolution - Victorian Art, Fashion & Design | Millennium Gallery

Sep 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Sheffield
Arts Fine Art
Last year, the Ashmolean Museum sought to challenge widely-held perceptions that the Victorian age was dark and gloomy and instead explored how the era embraced an explosion of colour through developments in art, science and technology. As well as reviving the rich colours of the ancient and medieval past, of the Middle East, India, China and Japan and the natural world, artists and architects embraced the new vivid hues which technological and scientific advances made possible. The exhibition showcased a spectacular and flamboyant array of artworks, costume and design that sprung from this ‘colour revolution’. In this special evening talk, Matthew will discuss this fascinating history, highlighting some of the objects from international collections ranging from Ruskin’s studies, Turner and Whistler’s experiments with colour harmony, and Morris & Co.’s elaborate designs. This listing is for the in-person talk happening at the Millennium Gallery. Thanks to funding from the Chromotope project, the event will also be live streamed to watch online – if you would like to book a ticket to the live stream of the event instead, please click here. Matthew Winterbottom is the Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. This event is part of the programme of events complementing The Ruskin Collection: Capturing Colour and Colour exhibitions at Millennium Gallery. This talk is supported by Chromotope, an ERC funded Research Project. Image Credit: Ashmolean Museum Oxford, Ramon Casas (1866–1932), A Decadent young woman, After the dance,1899. Welcome to the final BB-REG-NET Workshop ' Bio-based Policy for People and the Planet ' Date: Tuesday September 2nd 2025 Time: 10:00 -16:00 Location: The University of Sheffield, S10 2TN Come join us for an exciting day filled with discussions, networking, and learning at our first BB-REG-NET Workshop. BB-REG-NET is a pioneering network of experts from academia, industry, policy, regulatory and NGOs. Our mission is to develop new tools, standards and approaches to evaluate the quality, performance and environmental and economic impact of bio-based, biodegradable and compostable chemicals and materials (BB-Materials) - BB-REG-NET - Sustainable Chemicals and Materials . During this workshop participants will: Hear about, and dicuss the latest BB-REG-NET research findings. Take part in interactive workshops, aimed at generating new evidence for BB-Materials, focussed on economic impact, environmental impact, circular bioeconomy and communication and market awareness. Help shape our upcoming white paper 'Bio-based Policy for People and the Planet'. Meet other like-minded stakeholders working in the BB-Materials Sector. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Agenda: 09:45 - 10:00 Registration 10:00- 10:05 Welcome and Objectives Dr Jen Vanderhoven, COO, BBIA 10:05- 11:15 Workshop: Plastic Free? Do We Need a Standard? Dr Adrian Higson, Alder BioInsights, Professor Joanna Gavins, University of Sheffield “Plastic free” is everywhere — on packaging, in product marketing, in corporate pledges. But what does it actually mean? Right now, there’s no universally accepted standard defining what “plastic free” is — and that opens the door to confusion, inconsistency, and even greenwashing. In this workshop, we’ll ask the critical question: Do we need a standard for 'plastic free' — and if so, what should it look like? We'll unpack the current landscape of claims, explore the risks of operating without clear definitions, and consider the implications for consumer trust, regulatory compliance, and business 11:15 - 12:30 Workshops - participants choose one to attend From Fuel to Feedstock: Optimising Biomass Use for Climate and Value Jonthan Hobson, Perspective Economics, Adrian Higson, Alder Bioinsights Biomass is a valuable, renewable resource — but how we use it determines its true climate and economic impact. In the race to reach net-zero, decisions around biomass use are becoming more urgent. Should we burn it for short-term energy gains, or transform it into high-value chemicals and materials for long-term carbon benefits? This workshop will explore the role of biogenic carbon within the context of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and also examine the trade-offs and benefits of using biomass for energy production versus as a feedstock for chemicals, with an emphasis on maximizing environmental and economic impact under a carbon-pricing framework. The outputs will help feed into a proposed biomass utilisation hierarchy - a framework that prioritses uses of biomass from highest to lowest value in terms of environmental and economic outcomes. From Cradle to Chemistry: LCA for Liquid Polymer Applications Professor Rachael Rothman, University of Sheffield This workshop explores the critical role of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) in evaluating the environmental impacts of polymers used in liquid formulations , such as those found in personal care products, detergents, coatings, and agrochemicals. Through expert presentations, case studies, and interactive discussions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how LCA can guide sustainable material selection, product design, and regulatory compliance. Emphasis will be placed on the challenges of applying LCA to complex formulations, data quality considerations, and emerging trends in polymer innovation and circularity. The session aims to foster cross-sector collaboration between scientists, formulators, sustainability professionals, and policy stakeholders. Framing Bio-based materials in Language: Creating the Stories We Live By Professor Joanna Gavins, University of Sheffield Stories are not just the books we read to children at bedtime, or the tales we share by the fire, or the anecdotes we entertain colleagues with at work. Stories underpin how we think about the world and, in turn, how we communicate about all our experiences through language. This workshop will introduce the concept of the 'stories we live by', how they're created, how they spread, and how changing them can change how we think and behave. We'll look at how we can use language to frame BB-materials effectively; where, when, and how to tell stories about these materials; and how telling the right stories, in the right place, and in the right way can improve understanding and achieve communicative goals. 12:30 - 13:15 Lunch and Networking 13:15 - 14:30 Workshops - participants choose one to attend From Fuel to Feedstock: Optimising Biomass Use for Climate and Value Jonthan Hobson, Perspective Economics, Adrian Higson, Alder Bioinsights Biomass is a valuable, renewable resource — but how we use it determines its true climate and economic impact. The track has some significant features in it but all have a B-Line option around them should you not want to ride them. Whatever your reason is for attending the race, be it for the serious competition or just to have the experience of racing a mini Downhill, we’ll make it fun for all. Cultural Experiences
This course involves making a patchwork quilt with a finished size of around 78”x52” (200cm x 135cm), which is around the size of a single duvet. On the first day, you will cut out all of your pieces and start to put your initial blocks together. Depending on how quickly you sew, you may not need the whole of the second day to complete your quilt top, but the workshop will be available for those attendees who do need more time to finish. Following the class, you will need to take your quilt away to layer up, ready to quilt and bind. MATERIALS All materials for your quilt top are included in the cost of this class. This includes a full range of fabrics priced at £8.00 per metre. If you would like to use one of our lovely designer fabrics, an additional charge will be payable. Fabric to bind your quilt will also to be provided. Wadding and backing fabric are not included , but will be available to purchase on the day, if required. You will also need to bring a rotary cutter and 24” quilting ruler. If you would like us to source these, please let us know in plenty of time, so we can order them in for you. We do have A0 cutting mats you can use, or you are welcome to bring your own. You are welcome to come into the shop before the class, if you would like to choose your fabrics and make a start on cutting out. Please do let us know if you are planning to do this, so that we can ensure that a cutting guide can be provided for your chosen quilt. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and homemade cake are included. Skill level: Intermediate As for all of our sewing workshops, you must be able to use a sewing machine with a reasonable level of skill. On that basis, you should have either completed an “introduction to sewing machines” session, or have used a sewing machine yourself to undertake simple tasks like joining two pieces of fabric. If you have not done this, this course will not be suitable. Although basic techniques will be used and full tuition will be given, there is quite a lot to get through in this class. You will need to layer up, quilt and bind your quilt after the class, so you will need to have the skills to do this independently. You will also need to feel confident in cutting out accurately using a ruler and rotary cutter, although some support will be given with this. Terms and conditions: Our workshops are open to individuals aged fourteen and upwards. However, a responsible adult must remain on site at all time with minors. Full payment is required at the time of booking to secure your place. Any further details, along with anything you need to bring with you, will be sent out via email in advance of the scheduled date. All workshops will begin promptly at the scheduled time, so please ensure that you arrive early enough to get yourself settled in and have a coffee and cake before the class is due to start. Cancellations: For cancellations with more than two weeks’ notice, a refund will be given, less a 25% administration fee. Cancellations with less two weeks’ notice are non-refundable, unless we are able to fill your place. All workshops will clearly be marked as being suitable for beginners, intermediate or advanced. When booking a workshop, you are responsible for assessing your own abilities. Happy Hare cannot be held responsible if you book the wrong level of workshop or do not read the description of the workshop correctly. A refund will not be given for booking a workshop which you later feel is not at the right level for you, unless the cancellation is made more than two weeks’ prior to the scheduled date. Should we need to cancel a class due to circumstance beyond our control or limited numbers, a full refund will be given. Alternatively, you will be given the option to book onto another workshop. Please note: when making a booking it is assumed that our terms and conditions have been read and approved. Information Source: Happy Hare | eventbrite

25.09.25: Downstream Darkness: Apocalypse Now - 1979 - Franic Ford Coppola The third screening in our Downstream Darkness series, curated by Pete. Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American psychological epic war film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola, John Milius, and Michael Herr, is loosely inspired by the 1899 novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, with the setting changed from late 19th-century Congo to the Vietnam War. The film follows a river journey from South Vietnam into Cambodia undertaken by Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), who is on a secret mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a renegade Special Forces officer who is accused of murder and presumed insane and who sees himself as a god. The ensemble cast also features Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Albert Hall, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford. Milius became interested in adapting Heart of Darkness for a Vietnam War setting in the late 1960s, and initially began developing the film with Coppola as producer and George Lucas as director. After Lucas became unavailable, Coppola took over directorial control, and was influenced by Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) in his approach to the material. As always, ticket holders are privy to some insane drink deals!
