How Do We See Ourselves in Each Other? | Asheville Art Museum
May 2, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Asheville
Co-presented by Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies, Zócalo Public Square, and Asheville Art MuseumModerated by Tomás Jiménez,Founding Faculty Co-Director, the Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies As people move to and around the U.S., they transform communities, perhaps nowhere as strikingly as in fast-growing North Carolina. As the long-established Native, Black, and white citizens of the state welcome Latino and Asian newcomers into this new Southern immigrant gateway, once-separated groups are building new futures together—and understanding themselves anew through the eyes of their neighbors. This program is inspired by Coatlicue & Las Meninas: The Stanford Edition (2007/2025) by Mexican American artist Pedro Lasch. The piece is a 10-foot black mirror merging Diego Velázquez’s iconic painting Las Meninas (1656) and the monumental sculpture of the Mexica deity Coatlicue (1400s), commissioned by IAJS and on view at Asheville Art Museum from April 16 to July 13, 2025. Join us to view the artwork and hear a talk between Asheville Art Museum associate curator Jessica Orzulak and artist Pedro Lasch, who willdiscuss the work’s larger themes, including how mirrors encourage viewers to reflect on the movement of people, ideas, and objects across time and space. A panel moderated byStanford IAJS founding faculty co-director Tomás Jiménez and featuring philosopher and ethicist Kwame Anthony Appiah, immersive journalism and extended reality (XR) pioneer Nonny de la Peña, and immigrant integration advocate Federico Rios will follow, discussing the ways Americans, old and new, see ourselves in each other. We invite our in-person audience to continue the conversation with the artist, speakers, and each other at a post-event reception with complimentary drinks, small bites, art-viewing, and entertainment. “What Can Become of Us?” is a collaboration between the Stanford Institute for Advancing Just Societies (IAJS) and Zócalo Public Square, envisioning new perspectives on migration, America’s diverse communities, and how people come together across differences. The year-long series activates four regions of the United States and highlights newly commissioned works of art—visual, textile, and dance—to inspire a national conversation through exhibitions, public programs, and essays, and to work toward a better future.

Knitting Fog: Performance/Perfformiad | Herbert's Quarry, Mynydd Du/The Black Mountain, near Brynaman.
May 10, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Black Mountain
Knitting Fog is a live performance in Herbert’s Quarry, Bannau Brycheiniog, directed by Jess Lerner and created and performed with dance artists Gaby Agis and Amy Voris. Herbert’s Quarry is part of the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark and is an SSSi - a site of special scientific interest. It has stunning panoramic views, former quarry pits, 300 million year old rock formations, and a sense of ‘deep time’. This area of land - Y Mynydd Du, the Black Mountain - is a high plateau and an ancient seabed and is found close to Brynaman and Llangadog. Bridging movement, nature and geology, Knitting Fog is a site-responsive performance inspired by human anatomy and by the landscape of Herbert’s Quarry, and informed by research with geologist Alan Bowring from Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
The trio of performers will offer a historical, environmental journey and experience through movement. They will use movement as a sculptural material which acknowledges their identity and embodied imagination as mature women. Alan Bowring will be giving a brief talk about the site from a geological perspective and Nikki Tomlinson, who I am working with as producing mentor, will also be introducing. Following the performance you are warmly welcome to take part in a short improvisation activity led by the performers. No prior experience is needed and there is no obligation to take part. Tanya Syed will be filming and Nia Davies will be writing a creative response. Both will be presenting work at the Knitting Fog event Dance and Land at Brynamman Cinema on 31 May. A towel and a change of clothes are a good idea, just in case ; Feeling a little unsure? New skills outside of our comfort zone can always seem a little daunting, but we are always SO much more capable than we think we are. We are passionate about making sure everybody feels safe, confident and happy with their experience; our approach is gentle, supportive and compassionate and you have nothing to worry about; we’ll look after you. This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time.
Ben Bafaloukos
was born and raised outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. In his free time, Ben enjoys creating art, photographing wildlife (especially birds and bugs), and writing.
