“Perseverance” Screening | Eddy Theatre

Jun 4, 2025 (UTC-4)
Pittsburgh
Arts
Film
Join the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh for a 20 minute screening of “Perseverance,” the newest edition in PA Cyber’s Emmy-nominated Moments in History series that tells the story of local Holocaust survivor Melvin Goldman (z”l). The screening will be followed by a conversation Melvin’s daughter and author of Perseverance: One Holocaust Survivor's Journey from Poland to America , Lee Goldman Kikel, and filmmaker Scot Rutledge. About the Film: Melvin Goldman spent five years in the Jewish ghetto and concentration camps. He was 21 years old when Allied Forces liberated the concentration camps in 1945. He weighed 85 pounds and could not walk. He recovered for several years in Germany, and then a kind stranger sponsored his move to the United States where he eventually raised a family and owned a jewelry store in Squirrel Hill. Goldman’s story is captured in the video “Perseverance,” the newest edition in PA Cyber’s Emmy-nominated Moments in History series, which captures first-hand accounts of chapters in time. Goldman recorded his memories on cassette tapes in the late 1970s. In them, he had stated he wanted his story preserved in a book. His daughter honored his request, and she frequently tells his story at events. Her book was adapted into a play and performed at New Hazlett Theater Center for Performing Arts in Pittsburgh in 2023. About Lee Goldman Kikel: Lee Goldman Kikel grew up in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, where her early years revolved around school— Wightman School and Taylor Allderdice High School—and the family jewelry business. Lee recalls her time in the store with great fondness, and she can measure her life’s progress through those happy memories. As a little girl she played jacks on the floor while her father crafted jewelry and waited on customers, and her mother handled the books, sold merchandise, and helped with day-to-day business operations. Soon she matured from playing to helping, then to a more regular job, continuing through her college years at the University of Pittsburgh. She remembers earning her father’s hard-won approval to wait on customers as an exciting milestone in her life. Even as an adult, she would help out after her day job or on weekends during the busiest times. Lee earned a BS in psychology and a master’s degree in education, then worked in the mental health field as a rehabilitation counselor. Now retired from that career, she is involved in a variety of interests and activities. Lee is an avid traveler, gardener, and muscle car enthusiast. She is also a member of the Holocaust Center's Generations Speakers Bureau . Information Source: Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh | eventbrite

Una Noche de Flamenco | The Sound Room

Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
Arts
Flamenco, which UNESCO recently recognized as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos). It often features the call and response known as jaleo, a form of “hell raising,” involving hand clapping, foot stomping, and audiences’ encouraging shouts. Nobody really knows where the term “flamenco” originated, but all agree that the art form began in southern Spain—Andalusia and Murcia—but was also shaped by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. With a double elimination format competitors can expect to get a minimum of two matches. We will use a modified Grappling Industries ruleset for beginners brackets (white belts) & Grappling Industries ruleset for intermediate brackets (straight ankle locks & knee bars allowed) (blue belts). You can do the bracket that is appropriate to your belt level if you have more experience than listed on the brackets (i.e. 2 year white belt, 4 year blue belt, etc.) However there are no leg locks beyond straight ankle lock at white belt & no heel hooks or toe holds at blue belt. In youth divisions there will be no leg locks below advanced & the advanced divisions will follow the adult white belt rules (straight ankle locks only). Ryan Goodcase was raised as a quiet, young boy in the humble Midwest, and learned to speak into a microphone in order for his voice to be heard. You can hear that voice on Netflix is a Joke Radio or his full length special on YouTube, "Maybe They're Dead." , which has over 146,000 views. He is also popular on TikTok and Instagram, where millions of people have watched and reacted to clips of his comedy. Ryan was one of nine up and coming comedians Netflix included in their comedy festival's "Introducing..." showcase, which you can watch on Netflix's Youtube page. Goodcase has also joined the likes of Dana Carvey, Doug Stanhope, and Sinbad by winning the San Francisco International Comedy Competition in 2021 . You might also recognize him from a series of comedic Bed, Bath & Beyond commercials where he plays an apathetic sales associate (his lawyers have assured me that my performance had nothing to do with Bed, Bath & Beyond's filing for bankruptcy.) Wood Kiln Building Workshop and Demo | Laney College Art Studio / Ceramics

Jun 9, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
Cultural Experiences
Workshop Description Join Mike Tavares and Laney College for a hands-on workshop where we will build an American-style wood-fired train kiln. This unique kiln features a removable flat top, making it easier to load work without the need to crawl inside, and its compact size allows for faster firing turnarounds. The kiln’s design has been meticulously drawn layer by layer using Google SketchUp, a 3D modeling program, allowing us to bring the vision to life with precision. Throughout the workshop, participants will actively contribute to the construction of the kiln, learning key techniques in kiln building along the way. We will also cover essential aspects of the firing process, including proper loading techniques, wadding, glazing, and overall firing etiquette. Whether you’re a seasoned potter or new to wood firing, this workshop offers valuable insights into kiln construction and the art of wood firing in a collaborative, hands-on environment. The Kiln Building workshop will take place M-F 9am -5pm and Saturday Kiln firing basics demostration 10am -4pm. Students participating in the kiln building workshop will be invited back to participate in our inagural firing Labor Day weekend, August 29th-31st. For those interested in how to fire a train kiln, what it entails, how to load a kiln successfully, as well as glazes and slips for this process, we are offering a 1 day Demo on June 14th 10am -4pm. This does not include building experience or firing. Bio | Mike Tavares Mike Tavares is a Providence, Rhode Island native, born to Cape Verdean immigrants, whose artistic practice is deeply influenced by both his cultural heritage and everyday life. Mike received his BFA at Syracuse University with a concentration in ceramic art. As an artist, Mike primarily works with clay, creating unique dishware and sculptures. His journey into the world of ceramics is informed by his artistic vision and hands-on experience in firing and building wood kilns. His artwork is a reflection of his lived experiences, with a particular focus on the daily rituals and traditions of his Cape Verdean upbringing. Mike uses tools he crafts to cut and shape his work resulting in a matte or textured surface that encourages soft markings and deep earth tones from the wood kiln. In addition to his work as an artist, Mike Tavares is the Pathway Planner at a shelter in Springfield, Illinois. In this role, he focuses on finding creative outlets and enrichment activities for shelter animals, while also developing adoption pathways for struggling animals. A key part of his work includes conducting playgroups, which offer both a social and physical outlet for shelter dogs, helping them become more adoptable. Many of the skills Mike utilizes in this role were cultivated during his time at Syracuse University, where he co-founded Clay Siblings, a nonprofit initiative that brought college students into high schools and after-school programs across multiple cities. Through Clay Siblings, Mike and his team used art to connect with kids, fostering creativity and linking them to other opportunities within their communities. These experiences have shaped his belief in the power of creative solutions to bring positive change to both animals and people. Information Source: Mary Catherine Bassett | eventbrite
