Dive into a world where the past takes a different turn, blending imagination with historical events. Let's unravel the twists and turns together! Get ready to share your thoughts and insights face to face with fellow book lovers. Ticket includes a copy of Cahokia Jazz and $10 towards your first beverage at Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar. Seating is limited to 12 participants, registration is required for each person. Haven’t finished the book? Come anyway, but we cannot promise no spoilers. Must be 21 or older to attend. If you have already purchased the book from Rediscovered Books, please email a copy of your receipt to rdbooksevents@gmail.com and we will issue you a gift card equal to the cost of the book after you have registered. About the Book: Like his earlier novel Golden Hill , Francis Spufford's Cahokia Jazz inhabits a different version of America, now through the lens of a subtly altered 1920s--a fully imagined world filled with fog, cigarette smoke, dubious motives, danger, and dark deeds. In the main character of hard-boiled detective Joe Barrow, we have a hero of truly epic proportions, a troubled soul to fall in love with as you are swept along by a propulsive and brilliantly twisty plot. One snowy night at the end of winter, Barrow and his partner find a body on the roof of a skyscraper. Down below, streetcar bells ring, factory whistles blow, Americans drink in speakeasies and dance to the tempo of modern times. But this is Cahokia, the ancient indigenous city beside the Mississippi living on as a teeming industrial metropolis containing people of every race and creed. Among them, peace holds. Just about. Yet that corpse on the roof will spark a week of drama in which this altered world will spill its secrets and be brought, against a soundtrack of jazz clarinets and wailing streetcars, either to destruction or rebirth. Wild Card Book Club - The Butchering Art by Lindsey Fitzharris | Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar

May 29, 2025 (UTC-7)
Boise
Cultural Experiences
Welcome to the Wild Card Book Club! Come join us for a lively discussion about The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris. Let's delve into the intriguing world of Victorian surgery as we explore this fascinating book together. Get ready to share your thoughts, insights, and maybe even some "eew" moments as we dissect (pun intended) this historical non-fiction gem. Mark your calendars and bring your enthusiasm for our in-person gathering. Let's dissect this book over some coffee and good company. See you there! Ticket includes a copy of The Butchering Art and $10 towards your first cocktail at Ochos Cocktail and Wine Bar. Come to meet new people and have a great conversation! Discussion led by Rediscovered Books Booksellers, Amy and Diane. Enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine. About the Book: In The Butchering Art , the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of nineteenth-century surgery and shows how it was transformed by advances made in germ theory and antiseptics between 1860 and 1875. She conjures up early operating theaters--no place for the squeamish--and surgeons, who, working before anesthesia, were lauded for their speed and brute strength. These pioneers knew that the aftermath of surgery was often more dangerous than patients' afflictions, and they were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. At a time when surgery couldn't have been more hazardous, an unlikely figure stepped forward: a young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister, who would solve the riddle and change the course of history. Fitzharris dramatically reconstructs Lister's career path to his audacious claim that germs were the source of all infection and could be countered by a sterilizing agent applied to wounds. She introduces us to Lister's contemporaries--some of them brilliant, some outright criminal--and leads us through the grimy schools and squalid hospitals where they learned their art, the dead houses where they studied, and the cemeteries they ransacked for cadavers. Eerie and illuminating, The Butchering Art celebrates the triumph of a visionary surgeon whose quest to unite science and medicine delivered us into the modern world. Griffin House is an American singer-songwriter and storyteller. Touring and making records for over 20 years, House has a discography that includes over 13 albums. His debut record “Lost and Found” (2004) was featured on CBS Sunday Morning by music critic and then VP MTV/VH1, Bill Flanagan, who named House one of the best emerging singer-songwriters of our time. After forging a loyal fan base through years of grassroots touring as an opener for acts such as John Mellencamp and the Cranberries, House broke through as a national headliner in 2009 with an appearance on Late Night with Craig Ferguson and the release of his underground hit “The Guy That Says Goodbye to You is Out of His Mind.” The music documentary “Rising Star,” released on Amazon Prime in 2019, chronicles House’s journey through the music business, as he attempts to balance the challenges of life as a traveling modern-day troubadour with marriage, fatherhood and sobriety. House’s music has been featured on prime time television shows such One Tree Hill, Rescue Me, Party of Five, and Everwood, and reviewed in magazines such as Paste, No Depression and Rolling Stone. American Songwriter writes “if you want to be blown away by raw talent, look no further than Griffin House.” His latest release “The Tides” is a five song EP recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacquire King and is set for release on Aug 29, 2023. About the Book: A clear, approachable guide to the world of sesame, from halva, tahini, and sesame oil, to togarashi, gomasio and furikake, with 80+ vegetarian-forward recipes, from the founder of popular tahini outfit Seed+Mill in New York's historic Chelsea Market. With its delicious nutty taste, nutritional density, and long shelf life, the sesame seed is a tiny ingredient with an enormous cultural impact and a deeply rich history. In Sesame , Rachel Simons, co-founder of Seed + Mill, celebrates the evolution, history, and diversity of this classic ingredient. Whether it's in the form of a seed, tahini (a ground sesame paste), sesame oil, or halva (a delicate, fudge-like candy made from sesame paste), readers will learn to incorporate sesame in 80+ traditional and modern global recipes, including Sweet & Salty Sesame Challah; Pear and Pistachio Breakfast Loaf with Sesame Streusel; Lemony Orecchiette with Sesame Pangrattato; Gomasio-Crusted Salmon Skewers; and Tahini Swirled Pavlova with Labneh, Berries & Halva Flakes. Through vibrant photography, evocative storytelling, and contributions from a slate of noted chefs and food luminaries across the globe, including David Lebovitz, Molly Yeh, Nisha Vora, and Zoë François, Sesame is a loving culinary tribute to the sesame seed: how it has transformed dishes, how it has been translated by different culinary cultures, and how it has tied people and places together through generations.
