David Sandberg with Sheryl Sandberg | Kepler's Books

Join us to hear from internationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr David Sandberg whose new book Brain and Heart is a warm and brilliant memoir that captures the medical and emotional intensity of pediatric neurosurgery. In this moving, unflinching, and inspiring book, Sandberg combines his deep scientific and medical knowledge with raw emotion and unforgettably powerful stories of courage and love. The brain is the most complicated and perplexing of our organs, and it is also the one that makes us human. When it comes to a child's brain, the hearts of those who love them become inextricably linked to that story.
In Brain and Heart, Dr. Sandberg describes the joy, heartbreak, uncertainty, and physical and emotional challenges that come with performing brain surgery on children. What makes this book different from previously published medical memoirs is Dr. Sandberg’s unique honesty about what goes through his mind when he makes the most complex choices with life-changing consequences. While most medical memoirs focus largely on the patient perspective, Dr. Sandberg allows readers access to his private thoughts when making agonizing decisions—from giving the worst news imaginable to facing very scary surgical complications.
A father himself, Dr. Sandberg understands deeply how every one of his patients is an entire world, and his devotion to his patients and his work shines through on every page. We follow him as he finds his way to neurosurgery as a young doctor through to his most heartbreaking cases and greatest triumphs. We also travel with him to underserved countries, where lifesaving surgeries that are common here are almost nonexistent, and Dr. Sandberg shares the stories of the dedicated doctors and surgeons trying to enact change. Brain and Heart is an unforgettable book that will strengthen our sense of compassion and hope. About the Author David I. Sandberg,MD, FACS, FAAP, is a fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon who is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He has a special clinical and research interest in pediatric brain tumors, and specializes in minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to brain tumors, hydrocephalus and arachnoid cysts, as well as surgical management of arteriovenous malformations of the brain, congenital spinal anomalies, spasticity and craniofacial anomalies. The recipient of numerous research grants, he has pioneered novel treatment approaches for pediatric brain tumors, and he is principal investigator of several clinical trials. A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Sandberg received his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. About the Moderator Sheryl Sandberg is the founder and chair of the Sandberg Goldberg Bernthal Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to build a more equal and resilient world through three key initiatives: Lean In, Option B, and the Dave Goldberg Scholarship Program. Launched in 2013, LeanIn.org supports a global community of over 100,000 Lean In Circles in 183 countries. Sheryl is also the co-founder of Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners (SBVP), an early stage venture fund deploying private capital to fund innovation across consumer, enterprise, climate, and healthcare technology. Sheryl previously served as chief operating officer at Meta for fourteen years, during which the company grew from $150 million to over $110 billion in annual revenue and implemented industry-defining benefits and programs to make the workplace more inclusive. Before joining the company then called Facebook, Sheryl was vice president of global online sales and operations at Google, chief of staff for the U.S. Treasury Department under President Clinton, a consultant with McKinsey & Company, and an economist with the World Bank. She serves on the boards of the Bay Football Club and Terradot. Sheryl is the best-selling author of three books: Lean In, Lean In for Graduates, and Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, which she co-authored with Wharton professor Adam Grant. Psychotherapist Benjamin Yalom joins us to discuss Hour of the Heart, the memoir written in collaboration with his father and one of the most prominent psychotherapists of our time, Irvin D. Yalom.Hour of the Heart shows us how to relate to each other better in the moment, with more honesty and vulnerability. That hour of connection, occurring during a time of isolation and grief for so many, helped to sustain both patient and therapist, and enriched Yalom’s vision of what psychotherapy can do. Facing memory loss at age ninety-three as well as the fallout from a global pandemic that moved much of daily life online, legendary psychotherapist and bestselling author Irvin Yalom was forced to vastly reconsider the shape of his sessions with patients. Rather than throw in the towel in the face of change, Dr. Yalom considered head-on the limitations imposed by these new realities and revolutionized his practice. Turning his focus to what might be achieved in a one-hour, one-time-only meeting between patient and practitioner, Dr. Yalom employed an even more concerted use of his “here and now” approach. In Hour of the Heart, Yalom recounts some of these intense, life-changing sessions, exploring an array of human predicaments and his own late-career development as a therapist. In recounting these consultations, he shows how a therapist’s willingness to be open helps patients let down their own guards, leading to a deeper and more immediate connection—one necessary to achieving profound realizations in just sixty minutes. This vulnerability led Yalom to disclose details about his personal life that he might previously have kept hidden from patients, including his traumatic childhood in Washington, DC, the evolution of his thinking about philosophy and psychotherapy, and the recent death of his wife, Dr. Marilyn Yalom. Throughout, he pushes the boundaries of self-revelation as a therapeutic tool. Benjamin Yalom will be in conversation with author Doug Dorst. About the Authors
Benjamin Yalom is a psychotherapist, creative coach, theater maker, and writer. His therapy and coaching focus on understanding and aligning one’s values with one’s living, and unlocking creative approaches to work and life. He is a longtime writing collaborator with his father, Irvin D. Yalom. Prior to his current doctoral studies in Marriage and Family Therapy, Ben was the visionary force behind foolsFURY Theater, which helped transform San Francisco’s performing arts scene in the early 2000s. He is also an award-winning fiction writer and holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He lives with his wife, Dr. Anisa Yalom, and their three children in San Diego. Doug Dorst is the author of the New York Times-bestselling novel S. (acollaboration with filmmaker J.J. Abrams) and two other works of fiction: Alive in Necropolis (San Francisco’s 2009 One City One Book selection) and The Surf Guru: Stories. Everything today is thoroughly modern! Deep Cuts Book Club is back with another round of female writing that changed literature: some of the most foundational authors of the Modernist movement in the early twentieth century. Both our Austen series and our Brontës series gave British women the chance to shine, so this year we’re hopping across the Atlantic Ocean for our first three books…before finishing our survey back in England with the poster girl for Modernism, Virginia Woolf. This year we’ll examine Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Willa Cather, and Virginia Woolf as a literary unit, comparing and contrasting the themes in their work. What mattered to these individual authors? Which themes concerned them all? Read alongside your favorite booksellers, at your favorite bookstore, with tea and snacks! Staff members Stephanie, Kristin, and Donna will lead discussion on a different novel for each of our four in-person meetings. Perks that make this not your average book club: For each book we will have an introductory email for all books that include themes to pay attention to while reading, historical context, and recommendations for our favorite adaptations; and a chance to hang out at Kepler’s after hours with some of your favorite booksellers! Join us for our first meeting on Monday, March 10 at 6:00 PM to discuss The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Subsequent meetings will take place: May 12: My Ántonia by Willa CatherSeptember 15: The Age of Innocence by Edith WhartonNovember 10: To the Lighthouse by Virginia WoolfLike last year, we will be offering an option to purchase entry AND each book together. If you just want to attend a few events, you can buy books and meeting entry individually. If you would prefer to read your own copies, you are welcome to! We will be asking for a $15 club fee for each meeting to cover food, drink, and staffing costs. Last year was a blast, and we can’t wait to continue our literary journey with you all! Hope to see you there, Donna, Kristin, and Stephanie

We are delighted that Nura Maznavi will be joining us to discussYours Eventually, a mesmerizing debut novel set in a tightly knit Pakistani American community where a young doctor gets an unexpected second chance with the first love she never got over when he becomes one of the most eligible bachelors in town.
The Ibrahim family is facing a crucial moment: Their patriarch just lost his fortune as the result of a Ponzi scheme, and the family is picking up the pieces. At the family’s core is Asma—successful doctor and the long-suffering middle daughter who stepped into the family center after the death of her beloved mother years ago. Despite what the prying aunties think, Asma is living the life she has always wanted, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a doctor…or so she thinks.
In walks Farooq Waheed, Asma’s college sweetheart whose proposal was cruelly rejected by Asma’s aunt and father. Now, eight years later, Farooq has made his fortune by selling his Silicon Valley startup and is widely considered one of the most eligible bachelors in California. Jemimah Wei with Jonathan Escoffery | Kepler's Books
May 15, 2025 (UTC-8)

Stegner Fellow Jemimah Wei joins us with her dazzling debut novel which explores the formation and dissolution of family bonds in a story of ambition and sisterhood in turn-of-the-millennium Singapore.
Before Arin, Genevieve Yang was an only child. Living with her parents and grandmother in a single-room flat in working-class Bedok, Genevieve is saddled with an unexpected sibling when Arin appears, the shameful legacy of a grandfather long believed to be dead. As the two girls grow closer, they must navigate the intensity of life in a place where the urgent insistence on achievement demands constant sacrifice. Knowing that failure is not an option, the sisters learn to depend entirely on one another as they spurn outside friendships, leisure, and any semblance of a social life in pursuit of academic perfection and passage to a better future.
When a stinging betrayal violently estranges Genevieve and Arin, Genevieve must weigh the value of ambition versus familial love, home versus the outside world, and allegiance to herself versus allegiance to the people who made her who she is. In the story of a family and its contention with the roiling changes of our rapidly modernizing, winner-take-all world, The Original Daughter is a major literary debut, rife with emotional clarity and searing social insight. Jemimah Wei will be in conversation with fellow author, Jonathan Escoffery. About the Authors Jemimah Wei was born and raised in Singapore, and is currently a 2022–2024 Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Chasten Buttigieg | Kepler's Books

Teacher, advocate, and New York Timesbestselling author Chasten Buttigieg joins us to share his charming picture book about unconditional love. Papa’s Coming Home was inspired after Chasten and his husband welcomed newborn twins and began searching for books with families that looked like theirs but came up short. Chasten Buttigieg, husband of former presidential candidate and US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, says, “This story came from a desire to see a family that looks like our own on the pages of a picture book and follows a day full of excitement and hijinks that many families will relate to.”
Jojo and Rosie’s papa has been away on a trip, and they can’t wait to welcome him home! They make signs, they pick flowers, and with Daddy’s help, they bake a cake and pack the car with absolutely everything Papa might have missed while he was away.
When Papa’s plane arrives, they give him a huge hug—but when they bring him to the car, they realize there’s one small problem: Where will Papa sit?
Delightfully illustrated by Dan Taylor, this charming story filled with love celebrates dads and familial bonds. Chasten Buttigieg shines a beautiful light on the humorous musings of toddlers and a parent’s unconditional love for their child. In a time of increasing book bans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, it’s crucial for all types of families to feel supported and celebrated and for allies to have the tools like this story to raise the next generation of empathetic, inclusive citizens. We hope you will join us for a magnificent evening with Chasten Buttigieg. About the Author Chasten Glezman Buttigieggrew up in Northern Michigan. He is a teacher, advocate, and husband of former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. Chasten currently lives with Pete; their two children, Gus and Penelope; and their rescue dog, Buddy, in Traverse City, Michigan.
