FORUM - KEVIN DEKKER We invite all sculptors to attend an engaging forum that promises to inspire and inform. You will also have a chance to meet our new President, Belinda Dekker. Kevin currently lives in Burnett Heads (Bundaberg) with his wife Belinda. Some of you will know and possibly even voted for Belinda as our new Sculptors Queensland president. Kevin operates as “The Metalist” in a sculpture studio located at their home. As the name refers, I mainly focus on metal sculptures, however, over the years I have produced sculptures of wood, stone, ceramic and other materials and even combined these. I retired from full time work in 2021, so being a full-time artist is a rather new. Being involved with Sculptors Queensland has certainly helped build my reputation and connect with other artists. It’s a wonderful community that has helped foster collaboration and support as I continue to develop as an artist. Kevin's background since,17 years of age, was in the metal industry and particularly welding. His experience as a welder provided a unique perspective on sculpture, especially in understanding the properties of different metals and how to work with them creatively. He moved to Australia in 1989 and has enjoyed being a citizen here for nearly 30 years! My journey in sculpture has always been about creating bespoke and thought-provoking art. I’m not one to reproduce my works, but to move on to what I am inspired to create. I often get my ideas while sleeping. I’ll wake up with one of those “Ah ha!” moments. Belinda and I are excited as The Metalist continues to gain momentum! Whether you are a current member, or a sculptor interested in the future of sculpture in Brisbane, come along to connect with fellow artists, share ideas, and reignite your passion for sculpture. Don’t miss the chance to engage in this inspiring dialogue, join us and bring your creative spirit! A plate of something to share after the forum is also welcome! Anyone interested in presenting a Forum, please contact Jan Williams bloodwoodcreek@gmail.com Information Source: Sculptors Queensland | eventbrite

Sketching for Sculpture | Old Museum Brisbane

Workshop presenter, Felicity Smith, is a classically trained fine artist specialising in drawing, painting and sculpture. She studied sculpture in Sydney under Tom Bass at the Tom Bass Sculpture School and under Alberto Priotta at the Julian Ashton Art School. Whether your intention is to create an abstract, realist or conceptual work, it pays to sketch your ideas on paper. Much like a maquette, sketching allows you to work out the wrinkles before commencing your piece, and allows your imagination to adapt and grow your concept. Sketching also helps prospective clients, galleries and funding agencies to understand your vision and commit to the project. In this short introduction, we will look at carving out a simple form, taking into account the drawing envelope, and the overall gesture of the piece. We will note the way the light falls on the object, identify the major plane changes, judge how well the form and cast shadows are working, and discuss how to analyse the importance of negative and positive shapes. Materials required are: a bulldog clip, pencil B or 2B, putty rubber white paper - copy paper, cartridge paper, whatever you have to hand a support or backing board to clip the paper to. If you cannot stand at an easel (provided), you will be able to sit at a table but will need to bring a desktop easel. A few desktop easles will be available if required so don't worry if you don't have one. Felicity will provide the object you will be working with. If you require further information, please email Felicity on felicity531@gmail.com If you are unable to attend the workshop after you have registered, please cancel your registration on Eventbrite so others can register, as numbers are limited.
