Beloved by brunch enthusiasts, scapegoated for economic inequality, lauded by wellness gurus, and used as a staple ingredient in cuisines across Central and South America for centuries, the avocado has undergone an exceptional odyssey from ancient Aztec markets to modern-day Instagram feeds. In their new book Green Gold: The Avocado's Remarkable Journey from Humble Superfood to Toast of a Nation, Monique F. Parsons and Sarah Allaback provide an entertaining and far-ranging exploration of the avocado’s journey to a central place in the American diet and global imagination. On Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00 PM, Monique will discuss Green Gold at Bookends & Beginnings, in conversation with store owner and two-time James Beard Award winner Nina Barrett. Cocktails and appetizers featuring the book's starring fruit will be provided. Food and drinks will be served from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, with the event taking place from 6:00 to 7:00, followed by a book signing. MONIQUE F. PARSONS is a journalist, an award-winning audio producer, and an avocado farmer. A native of Carpinteria, California, she lives in suburban Chicago.

On Tuesday, June 3, at 6:00 PM, author Cristina Henríquez will discuss her highly acclaimed novel The Great Divide at Bookends & Beginnings in honor of the book's paperback release. The event will include a book talk and Q&A, and will be followed by a book signing. Searing and empathetic, The Great Divide—selected as a TODAY Show Read With Jenna Pick—is a sweeping tale of ambition, loyalty, and sacrifice surrounding the construction of the Panama Canal. This novel explores the intersecting lives of activists, fishmongers, laborers, journalists, neighbors, doctors, and soothsayers—those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course. CRISTINA HENRÍQUEZ is the author of four books including, most recently, The Great Divide, which was a New York Times Editors’ Choice selection, and one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2024. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, and elsewhere. She earned her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She lives in Illinois.

Looking Closely at The Indifference of Fire: A Woven Being Gallery Talk | Block Museum of Art

Join Marisa Cruz Branco, Terra Foundation Curatorial Fellow for Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland, in a conversation on The Indifference of Fire, a work on paper by Andrea Carlson. Together, we will discuss the complex references, themes, and histories that Carlson embeds in this dense landscape. Block Gallery Talks offer a close look at select works on view centering the interdisciplinary questions, perspectives, and expertise of faculty, staff, students, and community members across Northwestern and beyond. Participation level – medium, participants are encouraged to share thoughts and questions during the tour. Programs are open to all, on a first-come first-served basis. RSVPs are not required, but are appreciated. About the Speaker Marisa Cruz Branco (she/her, Isleta Pueblo/Portuguese) is the Terra Foundation Curatorial Fellow for Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland at the Block Museum. Her curatorial practice is guided by subjectivity, empathy, and curiosity. Marisa has a BA in Art History from Pitzer College, where she focused on surrealism and post-humanist philosophy. While at Pitzer, she received a Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and spent a year working under the curator of South and Southeast Asian Art. Since moving to Chicago, Marisa has continued to work in the arts, engaging with Indigenous artists and learning from the city’s Native community. In her free time, she likes to draw comics, read, write, and cook. Woven Being is part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities. Lead support for Woven Being is generously provided by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Major support is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts , The Joyce Foundation, and by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
