Come and celebrate our 1st Birthday! Welcome to Writer’s Block, a scratch night hosted by Sophia Griffin & Grace Barrington, where artists get to test out ideas and share works-in-progress to a group of people for feedback. It’s an intimate space where we get to talk through the knots, the sticking points, the stuck points, the “idk if this is even an idea” stages. It’s space for artists to gather; to remind ourselves of the incredible thinkers and makers in the city, and have time to connect and collaborate with each other. Sometimes, all you need is some reassurance you’re onto a good thing, or a conversation to help you crystallise what that “thing” really is. Writer’s Block means you have a whole room of creatives ready to help. - So, what’s the format? Sophia and Grace ask three different writers or makers to share something which they are writing/devising for the stage. Every writer is given a twenty minute slot; we listen to what they are working on, and then we give feedback. At the end, there’s time for drinks and socialising. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, then please come along - share your work, or lend an ear to someone else’s. Wednesday 13th November 6.30pm-8.30pm at Birmingham Hippodrome. If you would like to be considered to share at Writer’s Block, email writers.block.midlands@gmail.com Information Source: Writer's Block | eventbrite

Bibi Rukiya Performance Forum Lab – Birmingham Amina Khayyam Dance Company's third instalment of the Women-Only Performance Forum will be held on Thursday 8th May 2025 at the Patrick Studio, Birmingham Hippodrome – three weeks before the main production – 22nd/23rd May 2025. AKDC ‘s Performance Forums enable and manifest the theme of the production on those on whom it is targeted; engaging professional artists with ordinary, the least engaged – women to be creatively expressive and enabled. The Birmingham Performance Forum culminates in the work of seven women's groups and four girls' schools, who have come together weekly over 26 workshops from January to April, with a break in March due to Ramadan. With over 170 participants, this gathering is a testament to the power of collaboration, connection, and empowerment that embodies AKDC’s work. In this edition, a short excerpt of BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter will be presented. It draws inspiration from The House of Bernarda Alba by Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca. This powerful reimagining explores themes of control, repression, and liberation, echoing the intense emotional drama of Lorca’s classic, while adding a contemporary sensitivity that resonates with today’s audiences. Through the lens of Kathak dance with its storytelling vocabulary and movement, BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter examines the complexities of familial relationships, societal expectations, and the personal desire for freedom. Here, in the professional space of Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio, with over 170 participants, these women and girls share their stories, perspectives, and creative experiences from the culmination of three months of workshops. These women and girls have created a space to amplify their voices, challenge boundaries, and showcase their unique stories. AKDC proudly honours this remarkable journey, as the performance forum not only reflects individual creativity and talent but fosters a collective spirit of community and solidarity. On this special event, the stage will come alive with the vibrant energy of women supporting women, affirming the power and beauty of womanhood, including short excerpts of the performance of BiBi Rukiya’s Reckless Daughter adding depth to this celebration, inviting audiences to reflect on the challenges and triumphs of the women who have walked this path before us. It will be a unique inter-generational event, where young women will see their mothers dancing and become role-models – a celebration of the strength, resilience, and creativity of women and girls. There is a word I think about often: sonder. Sonder describes the realisation that everyone we meet, everyone we cross paths with, is living a life as complex and intricate as our own. How do we experience connection to ourselves, each other, time and the world around us? What are some of the beautiful moments of connection we've experienced? What kind of connections do we want to create and what is the power of connection and empathy in today's world? Join me, adjei, and friends to explore through this immersive show - an ode to the meaningful moments of connection, empathy and compassion in our lives. Meet new people and connect through interactive art, words, performances, inspiring stories. This is a free show but booking tickets in advance is necessary as there are limited spaces available. Booking early is recommended. You can also support my work further by paying for me to write you a personalised handwritten poem on card with any theme of your choosing. It could be a poem about going through changes, or comforting words of hope. Anything that you would really appreciate a poem on right now. All support helps me to continue my creative journey.
