The Armada Dial | Plymouth
Nov 23, 2011–Dec 31, 2030 (UTC)
Plymouth
Created by artist and sculptor Carole Vincent the artwork features a large sundial design and fountain. The artwork was commissioned by Plymouth City Council as part of the pedestrianisation of the City Centre in 1987.
The work was officially launched on 22 July 1988 by Queen Elizabeth II and commemorates the ‘Armada 400’ celebrations in the city. (Image courtesy of Plymouth Herald image archive)
Cast in concrete with Terrazzo and stainless steel, the sundial also features 12 plinths around the outside. Information panels on top of the stone plinths offer in detail ways to ‘read’ the sundial in a range of different languages.
The information plinths were made a particular feature of in 2010 when they were covered with decorative textiles as part of ‘Mrs Smith’s hit on Plymouth sundial’ – a secret commission by Plymouth College of Art. Guerrilla textiles installed overnight to the surprise of the public!
The sundial is set to G.M.T which differs in the summer (B.S.T) by one hour in advance. The sun is also due south in Plymouth 17 minutes later than it is at Greenwich; therefore at some points of the year the dial runs 1 hour 17 minutes behind G.M.T.
About the Artist
Carole Vincent (1939-2019) was an artist working in concrete. She lived and worked in Boscastle, Cornwall. Painter as well as sculptor, she explored the use of natural colour and texture in concrete for sculpture. Her work with pigments achieved remarkable success, opening new doors to architects, engineers and planners. Her passion was to work on commissions for specific environments, ranging from public spaces to individual buildings and gardens.

June 2025 Women's & Teen Girls 6 Hour Self-Defense Session | Fighting Spirit Personal Safety
Jun 7, 2025 (UTC-4)
Plymouth
The Womens and Teens Self-Defense Program is a comprehensive approach to safety training that includes awareness, risk reduction, posture and verbal skills as well as physical skills. It is meant to provide OPTIONS in the critical moments in which your personal space has been violated. It also aims to prevent assault against females and build confidence in their ability to stay safe. By cultivating the defensive mindset and the desire to fight for life, this program helps empower the female student from the inside out.
This dynamic program allows the student to learn skill sets with a hands-on approach. Skills are demonstrated and explained, practiced through repetition with and without padded targets and are reinforced with physical simulation practice. Simulation practice means students use skills they have learned against a padded attacker with full force. This helps them realize their physical power and also reinforces their need to verbalize initially and throughout the exercise. Students are not left alone in any of these exercises and are coached through each step which provides a supportive environment for all women including those that have survived assault.

About The Box
The Box
is Plymouth’s new £46 million cultural destination, proudly led by Plymouth City Council in Britain's Ocean City. A museum, gallery and archive. A cafe, shop and bar. A place that you can make your own, and where there's always something new to discover.
The opening of The Box was one of the most significant cultural events in the UK in 2020. Plymouth's former Museum and Art Gallery, Central Library and St Luke's church buildings have been completely transformed with a series of new galleries and exhibition spaces.
The Box also features a striking elevated ‘archive in the sky’ with research and learning facilities, food, drink and retail spaces. It's also created a major new public square (Tavistock Place) for performances, events and artistic responses.
Plymouth has a fascinating past and a dynamic present. The Box's collections, programmes and commissions share stories of international and local significance. The Box also gives contemporary artists the opportunity to create new work that responds to our historic collections.
